Bringing Austin Community College to North Hays County

The annexation of Hays Consolidated Independent School District (Hays CISD) into the Austin Community College (ACC) taxing district is up for vote in November. ACC has selected a 96-acre site for a North Hays Campus in Plum Creek, south/southeast of the intersection of Kohler’s Crossing and Kyle Parkway. Educational, training and enrichment programs offered by ACC include: • University transfer/core curriculum courses • Workforce training provided in conjunction with local businesses, as well as specialty certifications • GED, ESL and other developmental instruction • Lifelong learning classes: foreign language, cooking, dance, personal finance, golf, mechanics, and more A campus location in North Hays County will provide affordable access to higher education and learning: • Hays CISD residents currently pay the out-of-district tuition rate of $150 per credit hour for ACC courses • After annexation, the cost would be lowered to $42 per credit hour • High school students in the ACC District can take courses for college credit free of charge; credit classes are free to senior citizens when space is available The cost of bringing ACC to North Hays County is low: ACC’s proposed property tax rate for the coming year is $0.0951 per $100 valuation. The college offers a standard $5,000 homestead exemption plus an additional $105,000 (Continued on Page 3) Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

Plum Creek Press RATTLESNAKES

Things Happening- (Continued from Page 6) They will have plenty of places set up for you to take your family pumpkin patch photos, and they promise to have the maze set up, as well as fun things for kiddos to do. Photos and events are free, but if you’d like to bring a pumpkin home it’d be smart to bring a little cash. The patch will be open from Sunday, October 17 until the early afternoon of Halloween. Hours: M-F, 2:30 to dusk, Saturday from 9a to dusk, and Sunday from noon to dusk October 17: 5k Kyle-o-meter http://www.cityofkyle.com/parks/KyleOMeter.htm Do you have running in your blood? The annual 5k Kyle-O-Meter will be held on October 17 this year. It is part of the Kyle Fair and Music Festival, but I thought those who may be of the exercising kind may appreciate a little side-bar reminder. O cto b er 3 0 : 6 th A nnual H allow een Carnival http://www.cityofkyle.com/parks/Halloween.htm On October 30 City Square Park will be transformed into a Halloween funland. All of Kyle is invited to this fun afternoon (noon-4p) where there will be a costume contest (grouped by ages), inflatables, carnival games and I’m guessing lots of candy.

SEEM TO BE MOVING WITH COOLER TEMPS A big rattler was spotted in the newest section on Odom in August. As always, please be careful gardening, playing in the yard, and using the trails and lake, too.  Check your porch and backyard before letting your kids or dogs outside.  In addition, you may want to discuss the rattlesnake venom vaccine for your dog with your vet. Pay close attention when outside in your yard, garage, or driveway, especially if you live near the golf course, any drainage channel or more natural area, or near a construction area.  Before working in your garden, use a rake or long stick to check for snakes.  Be mindful of snakes when using the trails and sidewalks, especially in the evenings.  If you spot a snake, get out of the area immediately. If you find a snake or other critter and need assistance, you can call PC Resident Kirk Ferguson at 512.709.0442. His assistance is free, but donations are appreciated. Remember, don’t kill snakes other than rattlers, as many of them are non poisonous and help keep the rat and rattlesnake population under control.  It is always better to retreat from any snake than engage it.

So, there’s several really neat things you can do without ever leaving your hometown. Have a safe and Happy October.

PLUM Creek Press Meet the Neighbor’s Pet: Bowie the Bulldog I am Bowie the Bulldog and just moved to Plum Creek with my owners Lacy and Kevin and their kids Wesley, Wyatt and Jessica.  I’m so happy to be here in Kyle, instead of boring ol’ San Antonio, and I’m especially lucky to live near my grandma Retta and grandpa Jim who surprise me with big dog bones. Plum Creek has so much to offer a dog like me.  I love the front and back porches, where I lounge for hours.  Also, I enjoy the walking trails but only after the sun goes down ‘cause a big boy like me can’t take the heat.  My tongue is too big for my mouth and when I get overheated, it drags on the floor.  My family loves the pools and fishing lake, but since I sink instead of swim, I prefer to watch on the sidelines.  My favorite hobby is skateboarding, and I hope to have my own reality TV show one day called “Boardin’ with Bowie”.  If that doesn’t pan out, I will offer my cute mug to be Bowie High School’s official mascot, since my mom was a former head-cheerleader and they are my namesake, after all.  I can’t wait to meet all of you at our new Plum Creek Dog Park!  I’m very friendly, especially to pizza delivery guys and kids with ice cream cones.  So until then…later dudes. Plum Creek Press Our Trees Need Attention… and Trimming

Trees are one of the many things that make Plum Creek such a wonderful place to live. The street trees and yard trees planted throughout Plum Creek reduce home cooling costs by providing shade. They cool the ambient air temperature by providing shade to the sidewalks and streets, which absorb sunlight and continue to radiate heat during the night.  Trees reduce storm water runoff, store carbon, and improve air quality by releasing oxygen and filtering the air. Additionally, the trees make walking in Plum Creek cooler and safer by creating a physical barrier between pedestrians and cars and improve our quality of life. However, these wonderful trees with all of their benefits need our regular attention and care. Many of the trees need to be trimmed to prevent damage to persons or vehicles that traverse the sidewalks and streets.  Please prune any and all of the trees in the planting strip or yard that are encroaching on these areas. It is requested that these trees be trimmed up to allow seven (7) feet of clearance beneath them. With everyone taking care of their trees, Plum Creek will continue to be a place where people want to call it home.  Thanks so much!

Recipe of the Month PLUM DELICIOUS: POPCORN BALLS By: PC Resident Melissa Housman

Popcorn Balls: Ingredients • 2 cups sugar • ½ cup white syrup • ½ tsp. salt • 1 tablespoon vinegar • 1 tsp. vanilla • ½ cup water • 3 quarts popped popcorn (9 tablespoons of unpopped kernels)

Happy Halloween . . . well almost. Popcorn balls have a special place in my heart. My grandmother always made them every Halloween, and yes, it was exciting to go to her house to show off our costumes. But, it was equally, if not more, exciting to sink our teeth into the sugary, sweet, crunchy, and sticky goodness known as the popcorn ball. Because of my slight obsession for these holiday confections, I’m going to share two of my favorites. The first recipe is for the traditionalist, using a sugar syrup poured over freshly popped popcorn and formed into baseball-sized balls. The second recipe, which is a bit easier than the first, is for the kid in all of us. It has a marshmallow base rather than syrup and has a hint of caramel from the brown sugar. Oh-and chocolate! How bad can that be? Tips: • Pull out that electric air popper that has been housed on the top shelf of your pantry, you know the one Aunt Alma bought you as a wedding gift…air popped popcorn is THE BEST for these recipes. Don’t rely on microwave popcorn. • Use aluminum roasting pans to mix the popcorn in, as it allows for easy clean up. • Allow the sugar and marshmallow mixtures to cool before forming them! You are working with hot sugar, so take precaution! • Spray your hands with non-stick pan spray. It helps when shaping the popcorn balls. Keep it on the counter and spray, as needed.

10

Plum Creek Press - October 2010

Directions • Boil sugar, syrup, salt, vinegar, vanilla, and water to soft ball stage or 250 degrees on a candy thermometer • Pour sugar mixture over popcorn that has been placed in the aluminum roasting pan. Let cool before forming with buttered hands. • Shape into baseball or small softball sized balls. Marshmallow Popcorn Balls Ingredients • T. unsalted butter • 1 ten oz. bag miniature marshmallows • ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed • 3 quarts popped popcorn • 1 cup M&Ms Directions • Place popped popcorn and M&M's into an aluminum roasting pan. • Melt butter in heavy pot over low heat. Add marshmallows and brown sugar. Stir until melted. Remove from heat. Let cool for 2 to minutes. • Pour over popcorn and M&Ms. Toss well. With buttered hands, shape into balls.
