Bobcats welcome 40 players to spring football practice “It’s good to have three quarterbacks out here because you save some arms and you get reps,” Buckley said. “Last spring, we had a coach playing quarterback and no running backs on the roster. This year, we have three quarterbacks and four running backs and, obviously, that makes it a lot different from a carryover standpoint to the fall from the spring.” Quarterbacks going through spring practice are returnees Detric Hawthorn (Col-

It’s just a matter of taking what they’ve learned through meetings and walk-throughs and correlate it to full speed drills.” Buckley added the familiarity between the coaches and players is an advantage this spring. “It’s a totally different look than it was last year,” he said. “I hope your second year is

Submitted The process of recovering from pregnancy and birth varies with each woman and the events that occurred during birth. With parenthood, many questions arise as a parent is adjusting to their new role. To help meet the needs of new parents, South Central Regional Medical Center is providing educational books for parents to take home to use during the postpartum period. The postpartum period, a six week period immediately following birth, can be emotionally and physically challenging for a new mother. Our goal with each new mother is to provide as much education as possible. Along with hands-on education from nursing staff, SCRMC’s Women’s and Children’s Place is now providing educational books for each newborn. These complimentary books are provided to families after delivery by the South Central Health Care Foundation. Following the Birth educational books include information about care for the moms and newborn care. Topics covered are: Postpartum recovery, diet and exercise for moth-

ers, newborn appearance, newborn care, breastfeeding, a parent’s new life and postpartum depression. SCRMC nursing staff will provide education, care and support during the stay at the hospital. The educational books will explain what to expect, what is happening currently and more on recovery for mom. Implementation of the educational booklets began in April. By hosting fundraising events throughout the year, South Central Health Care Foundation is able to provide community assistance with education, screenings and support groups. Approximately $31,000 was raised at the 2017 Art of Healing. These funds will be utilized for items like Following the Birth education booklets to help those in our community who need it most. For more information on SCRMC’s Women’ and Children’s Place, please contact Connie Landrum at [email protected]. For more information on the South Central Health Care Foundation, please contact Becky Collins at bcollins@ scrmc.com.

Four students who were recently selected to represent JCJC in the Intercollegiate Jazz Band at Hinds County Community, Kiyah Hillman – Baritone Saxophone, Joseph Welch – Piano, Miles Dennis – Guitar, and Dustin Logan – Bass) will utilize some of the tips received from worldwide jazz clinician and JCJC alumnus, Bart Marantz. Dr. Jonathan Jung, faculty piano and organ instructor will accompany JC Voices, who will be singing a variety of old and new favorites this year, including Orange Colored Sky, My Favorite Things, Teach Your Children, and others, plus selections highlighting the men and the women, Stuff Like that There, and Sound of Silence. and the last day of final exams will be May 4. We’ve talked about it all through the offseason. They are going to have to do a great job of getting to their high school and getting with the guys they have trained with, and not only continue to work out in the weightroom, but be in shape when they report July 9.” The Bobcats will open the 2017 season on August 31 at East Mississippi.

JCJC students participate in first Intercollegiate Honor Band By Teresa McCreery Six Jones County Junior College music students were invited to participate in the first Intercollegiate Honor Band held recently at Hinds Community College. Mikala McLaurin, Northeast Jones on clarinet; Kiyah Hillman, Madison on baritone-sax; Scarlett Sandifer, South Jones on flute; Miles Dennis, South Jones on electric guitar; Joseph Welch, South Jones on piano and Dustin Logan, West Jones on bass guitar. They competed with universities and junior/community college students for an opportunity to perform and attend workshops. “It was a unique experience being a part of the inaugural Intercollegiate Honor Band with some impressive clinicians,” said Scarlett Sandifer. “Over the weekend we spent many hours in rehearsals. Dr. Cramer always kept us engaged throughout those long rehearsals, which is exactly the type of educator I want to be.” Only 68 students were selected to participate in the Intercollegiate Honor Band conducted by Professor Ray Cramer, Director Emeritus of the Indiana University Band program. He is an internationally recognized clinician and conductor and has annual engagements across the United States and Japan, with the Musashino Academia of Music. Professor Cramer served as president of the College Band Directors National Association and has held numerous leadership positions in band organizations world-wide. “I am so proud of my JCJC students that were selected to participate in this experience. They competed with university students as well as their peers in junior/community colleges. This new organization has the opportunity to impact so many music students and I’m thrilled Jones is a part of it,” said JCJC Director of Bands Dr. Ben Burge. Additionally, of the 19 students who were asked to participate in the All-State Junior College Jazz Band held in conjunction with the IHB Band, four students were from JCJC. The All-State Jazz Band was under the leadership of Bart Marantz, who was a Jones County Junior College faculty member in the early 1980s, before his tenure at the Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts. A Fulbright Scholar, performer, clinician and jazz education visionary, Marantz has produced countless professional performers including Norah Jones and Erykah Badu, among others. His students have won much recognition including Down Beat Awards, Grammy Awards, and others. Marantz

is an author, teacher, performer, and patron of the performing arts. “To have the chance to work with someone like Mr. Marantz only comes along once in a lifetime. He pushed all of us to see beyond the music. There was a lot of music to learn in such a short time, but the payoff was well worth it,” said Miles Dennis. “Working with all of the other musicians from other colleges also led to new friendships and we all learned so much from this experience.” Baritone saxophonist, Kiyah Hillman, shared she also enjoyed being a part of something new and challenging. “I had a great experience being involved with the Intercollegiate Jazz Band. I was able to learn how to pick up things faster than normal and how to learn on my own. I also enjoyed playing in the band with students from other schools.” At the conclusion of the weekend of music, JCJC Associate Director of Bands Lindsey Keay was elected to the Intercollegiate Board of Directors to assist in the development and planning of future Intercollegiate Honor Band clinics.

Nora Davis teachers shine a light on life skills By Lacey Slay, Laurel Schools Teachers are continually searching for new ways to engage students and teach lessons that will have a lifetime of impact, and two Laurel teachers recently had a light-bulb moment while planning a series of life skills units. The Nora Davis Magnet School GOAL (Greater Opportunities for Accelerated Learning) teachers recently completed a lesson of study on electricity where the students constructed and wired lamps. The project was a hands-on activity that allowed the students to see their lights shine. “My students greatly enjoyed this lesson,” said GOAL Teacher Jeremy Brooke. “Many had never used tools, or done any work with electricity before. The lesson on electricity gave our students the opportunity to experience something they had never thought about before.” The lessons taught in the GOAL gifted classes often relate back to what is being taught by the regular classroom teacher, and at Nora Davis, teachers Diann Wolf and Jeremy Brooke work alongside of the regular classroom teachers to help advance various concepts and accelerate learning. “The fourth grade students had just finished a lesson on circuits, so they were able to apply that information to making the lamps. While the concept is basically the same from what they learned in the classroom using batteries and bulbs, there are different terms and additional processes they learned in the GOAL class,” Brooke said. Prior to constructing the lamps, the students learned how electrical wiring and circuits work, and then the students designed their lamps on paper before beginning the construction process. The students worked in teams and assisted each other with the project. “We wanted everyone to have a part in this lesson and learn something new. I have a number of students who had previous experience with tools and they helped lead our groups,” Brooke said. “Others have a great design sense and are very creative, so those students took leadership over the design process. It’s great seeing students mentor each other and help accomplish a task.” Following the completion of the lamps, the school held a silent auction where all of the lamps were sold to the highest bidder. The money raised will help provide materials for the remaining lessons in their current life skills unit, which includes cooking, gardening, and camping.

West Jones downs Laurel, 8-2 By Zac Chamblee Despite not playing their best game and only outhitting the competition by two, the West Jones Mustangs picked up their 16th win of the season Tuesday night in downing district foe Laurel, 8-2. “A win is a win,” Mustang coach Trey Sutton said after the game. “Anytime you get a win, it’s a good night. Maybe the energy wasn’t there a little bit that I’m used to seeing, but at the end of the day, you get a win. It’s a good day.” After Evan Bynum gave West Jones a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrificefly, Laurel followed with their only two runs of the game in the second courtesy of RBIs from Kolby Smith and J.R. Pruitt. West Jones’ Kris Riley (17) delivers a pitch in Tuesday’s game against Laurel. “Laurel played a good Photos/Zac Chamblee ball game,” Sutton added. “They swung it well and played good defense. You have to tip your hat to them. They showed up, and it really felt like they out-competed us at time tonight.” Sutton’s Mustangs responded big-time with four runs in their half of the second. Trey DeSantis, Colson Harris and Dustin Dickerson picked up RBIs in the inning for West Jones. And Dickerson would eventually come around to score on a passed ball to give the Mustangs a 5-2 lead. West Jones added two more runs to their lead in the third after Harris was walked with the bases loaded and DeSantis scored on a passed ball. DeSantis added an RBI double in the fifth to plate the Mustang’s final run of the contest. On the mound, three Mustangs saw action in Tuesday’s game. Kris Riley started the game, while Dustin Dickerson and Evan Bynum appeared in relief. Featuring multiple guys, that was the plan going in, according to Sutton. “We had everybody on a pitch count tonight. It was either throw bullpens yesterday or get them some live game work today, and we went with that,” Sutton said. “That’s why everybody was in and out a little bit. Just to get them some work against some live hitters and keep them fresh and ready for Thursday.” West Jones’ Trey DeSantis (4) slides safely into home plate in West Jones, who has won nine of their last eleven, imTuesday’s game. proved to 7-1 in district play with the win. “We lost a tough one Saturday and bounced back today,” Sutton concluded. “I feel like we’re playing pretty good baseball right now.” Laurel on the other hand fell to 3-16 overall and 0-8 in district play with the loss. Right, Laurel’s Keno Shelby (7) delivers a pitch in Tuesday’s game. Below, Laurel’s Resaad Pettis (1) swings at a pitch in Tuesday’s game against West Jones.
