POSITION DESCRIPTION: CHURCH SCHOOL TEACHER Purpose: • To assist in the nurture, care and spiritual feeding of children in a Church School setting, being a wholesome example of the Body of Christ. • To share one’s faith with others through the telling of God’s story as related to us in Holy Scripture (Old & New Testaments), The Book of Common Prayer and traditions of The Episcopal Church. Individual & Team Responsibilities: • To maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ • Desire to grow in faith and commitment to God and participate in personal Bible study and prayer • Worship regularly with the congregation • Attend a diocesan “Safe Church Training” • Submit necessary paperwork to the Rector for a confidential background check screening • Pray regularly for each child and others on your teaching team • Participate in scheduled teachers’ meetings • Follow the curriculum chosen by the parish, allowing time for planning and preparation before every lesson each week (at least one hour) • Express needs and concerns as a teacher to the Director, Coordinator or Rector • Find a substitute teacher in advance if you know of an upcoming absence Sunday Morning Responsibilities: • Arrive in the classroom at least 15 minutes early, in order to prepare materials and arrange the room to create an effective learning environment • Greet each child upon their arrival and involve him or her in conversation and meaningful activity • Model the love of Christ by getting to know children and sharing their concerns, needs and joys • Guide learning by: o Being well prepared to use Bible stories, questions and comments appropriate to the age level in order to accomplish the lesson aims o Selecting a variety of learning activities, knowing that each child learns differently while encouraging each child to actively participate o Participating with children in learning activities What our Church Offers You: • A Director, Coordinator or Vestry liaison available to consult, problem solve and supply resources • Curriculum materials to make teaching fun and lead to your spiritual and intellectual growth • Teacher training and the opportunity to attend diocesan educational events • A well-stocked supply cabinet of arts & crafts materials • A clean, age appropriate classroom space • The prayerful support of clergy, staff, vestry and church members • A calendar of the school year with lesson topics determined as well as special events • Opportunities for friendship and problem solving with other teachers at teachers’ meetings and social occasions Benefits: • The joy of learning from and being with children • Meeting new people • Growing in faith • The chance to make a difference in a young person’s life!
