❯❯❯ for managing pesticide resistance ❯ Pest- and disease-control products are of great benefit for potato producers, but they must be used carefully to prevent resistance BY GUY ROY, CONTRIBUTOR

Most pest-management products are excellent for control of diseases, weeds or insects when they are used in accordance with label instructions and within the framework of an integrated pest-management program (IPM). This can include the use of resistant varieties, scouting for insects and weeds, crop rotation and other management practices to avoid pests and disease. Consult agronomists in your province for the best IPM practices for your area. However, any population of weeds, insects or diseases can contain strains naturally resistant

to the products used. The resistant biotypes can eventually dominate if the same treatments are repeatedly applied to the same fields. Other mechanisms of resistance, such as increased metabolism, may not be linked to the site or the mode of action but which may be specific to chemical compounds. To delay the onset of resistance, it is recommended not to use only one product exclusively to control a given pest. In order to prolong the effectiveness of a pest-control product, these strategies are recommended:

1. Alternate products. Never use more than three consecutive applications of the same pesticide, products of the same chemical group or products having a similar mode of action. One can make several applications of the same product during the same season if these applications are alternated with products of a different type and using different modes of action. 2. To choose the right product at the right time within the framework of an IPM program, field scouting is essential. Before choosing the product, check records of previous applications. As much as possible, use a combination of cultural, biological and chemical practices. 3. Consult with agronomists about the possibilities of resistance to the pesticides used for the targeted pest. Note the other factors which could influence their performance in controlling pests and disease — temperature, for example. 4. If a product seems to lose its effectiveness against a pest which it controlled previously, consult with the manufacturer or a local specialist to determine the reason. 5. Consult with local agronomists for specific recommendations for managing resistance and other IPM practices.

in 2013 for POTATOES ❯ A review of new fungicides and insecticides registered for use in 2013

❯ Zampro Zampro was registered by BASF Canada Inc. in April, 2012. This new product contains an active ingredient known as ametoctradine (Group 45) and is very effective for fighting late blight. When mixed with dimethomorph (Group 40), the active ingredient in the fungicide ACROBAT 50WP, Zampro is offered in suspended concentration. The two active ingredients in Zampro are from different chemical groups and therefore have distinct modes of action. This fungicide is an important key to improve strategy to control blight and especially to delay the development of resistance. When used in accordance with the directions on the label, Zampro can also reduce the rotting of the tubers caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans in the warehouse if used directly before or after the vines have died. This product must be used only as a preventative spray. The use of an adjuvant can be prescribed in order to improve the performance against late blight. However, it is important to notice that the label provided by BASF mentions a possibility of phytotoxicity if combined with products not tested by the company, so it must be used cautiously. ❯ Quash For 2013 Valent Canada Inc. is offering Quash, its new Group 3 fungicide for the preventative control of certain diseases in canola, dry beans, field peas, chickpeas, lentils, berries and potatoes. For potatoes, Quash is very effective against the early blight caused by the fungus Alternaria solani. The active ingredient of Quash is metconazole, a broad-spectrum fungicide from the triazole family. Its mode of action is the inhibition of certain types of processes in the growth of fungi such as sterol biosynthesis. As mentioned on the label, Quash has systemic activity. It is rapidly absorbed into plant tissues within two hours in which it can move only to the top of the plant. Metconazole doesn’t have any effect on the spore germination of fungi but it disrupts the development process

in the early stages of the biological cycle. Even though Quash can’t prevent spore germination, it prevents the development of these spores and inhibits the growth of mycelia. As with most fungicides, Quash is particularly effective if applied before infection. It must also be used as a regular spray in association and alternation with other effective fungicides that have a different action mode. valent.com

❯ Luna Privilege In July 2012 Bayer CropScience announced registration of its new fungicide Luna Privilege for the control of early blight. The active ingredient is fluopyram. The label says this Group 7 fungicide has a broad spectrum of control with preventative, systemic and curative action. bayercropscience.ca

Quadris Top was registered in Canada for application on potatoes in March, 2012 and will be available for the 2013. This fungicide contains azoxystrobine (Quadris) with difenoconazole (Inspire), which are Group 4 and Group 28 respectively. Syngenta says this new product will be very helpful to fight early blight, grey molt (Botrytis spp.), brown spots (Alternaria alternate) and black dots (Colletotrichum coccodes). Quadris Top penetrates the vines in a translaminar and systematic way into the xylem to efficiently control and prevent the appearance of target pathogens. The two active ingredients in the product move from the tip and the upper side of the leaf to its lower side in purpose to protect the area normally unreached by contact fungicides. syngenta.com

Syngenta has added difenoconazole to Cruiser Maxx Potato to make a new Cruiser Maxx D Potato formulation. Syngenta says this should solve the problems of the fludioxonil’s single use (MAXIM PSP) as much as the resistance proprieties with Fusarium Spp. Cruiser Maxx D Potato now contains two fungicides from different groups (Group 3 and 12), to effectively fight rhizoctonia (Rhizoctonia solani), silver scurf (Helminthosporium solani) and the rotting tubers caused by Fusarium Spp. Cruiser like Actara 240SC, contains thiamethoxame. This active ingredient is effective against potato beetle, aphids (including green peach aphids, potato aphids, buckthorn aphids and foxglove aphids) and leafhopper for 100 days. syngenta.com

Allegro 500F, a Group 29 fungicide in use since 2003, is now registered for sclerotinia in potatoes. Syngenta says Allegro is highly active against late blight, providing excellent foliar protection. Allegro provides activity against late blight spore production, inhibiting the formation and movement of spores. Allegro effectively limits the spread of late blight in this year’s crop and reduces the spread to future crops. syngenta.com

❯ Minecto Duo Syngenta have asked for registration of their new product Minecto Duo. If approved, it will offer a different action mode to help fight potato beetle and long-term broad-spectrum control against insects. Minecto will contain thiamethoxame (Actara 240 SC – Cruiser) with cyantraniliprole, an insecticide of Group 28. syngenta.com

❯ Regalia Maxx

Phostrol (Group 33) is a combination of different sources of phosphorus acid salt, sodium salt, ammonium, and potassium, controlling many types of disease in potatoes, vegetables and fruits. For potato, many application techniques were successfully tested such as in-furrow treatment for pink rot (Phytophthora enrythroseptica). The foliar applications of Phostrol control late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and pink rot. Like Confine, it is prescribed for post-harvest application on tubers in storage, in order to elimination of late blight and pink rot. engageagro.com

Regalia Maxx is a biological fungicide made from an extract of giant knotweed (Reynoutria sachalinensis). It is expected to be registered for late blight control in potatoes by spring 2013. The foliar use of Regalia Maxx will allow the plant to release its natural defence mechanisms. Regalia is already registered for grapes, wheat, tomatoes and strawberries. It is effective for the suppression of fungal disease such as late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans. It could be used alone or mixed or tank mixed. Regalia Maxx could be used in rotation with other protection products of crops to control diseases. Regalia Maxx is produced by Marrone Bio Innovation and will be distributed by Engage Agro Crop. engageagro.com

❯ Torrent 400SC The Group 21 fungicide Torrent 400SC containes cyazofamide. It is active under all the states of oomycete fungi’s life cycle. Early applications protect the vines against late blight and postharvest applications can also be used to prevent tubers from rotting due to late blight inside the warehouse. Torrent 400SC is made by ISK Bioscience Corp. and is distributed by Engage Agro Corp. engageagro.com

❯ Closer Dow AgroSciences has submitted for registration Closer, a new insecticide in which the active ingredients will be sulfoxaflor. Dow says it will have a rapid effect on insects such as aphids, which stop feeding and fall to the bottom of the leaves after 30 minutes. dowagro.com/ca

❯ Verimark SC & Benevia OD DuPont Canada has submitted these products for registration. The active ingredient is the Group 28 product cyazypyr, also in Coragen. DuPont says they will offer excellent suppression against potato beetle, corn borer, aphids, potato flea beetle and leafhopper. Verimark SC & Benevia OD will also control lepidoptera, fruit flies, leafminers, whiteflies, psyllids, thrips and weevils. DuPont says cyazypyr will have an excellent environmental and toxicological profile, because it will target unwanted insects without necessarily killing beneficial ones such as beneficial arthropods. It will also have a good persistence because of its strong systemic action. Registration of Verimark SC is expected by winter 2013 for in-furrow applications.
