Perspective: one’s point of view, how one understands things, an outlook on life.
Danny Beech
“Some complain that roses have thorns, I am thankful that thorns have roses.” Abraham Lincoln The Perspective: Paul saw that his imprisonment and the slander of evil preachers had “really served to advance the Gospel” (v.12) This kind of perspective says “As I walk in obedience, God uses every one of my circumstances to advance the Gospel, and in that I can rejoice.”

Paul says his ultimate deliverance is “Christ being honored in my body, whether by life or death.” This perspective says: “My ultimate deliverance is not my own safety or comfort or life, but Jesus’ glory revealed in my life.”

The Mirror: Philippians 1:12-20 shows us that for a believer in Jesus, real joy is possible in every circumstance. But it is also a mirror to our own lack of joy in our circumstances and our unbiblical perspectives on life and death. It reveals a desperate need for change.

This perspective says: “All of my life is an opportunity for fruitful labor just like Christ’s life accomplished fruitful labor. Every circumstance of life is an opportunity for fruitful and eternally rewarded labor for Christ.”

“To die is gain” (21) = “I desire to depart and be with Christ, for that would be far better” (23)
Dustin Raley
This perspective says: Because death brings me (if I’m a believer) immediately into the presence of Jesus, it will actually be the greatest gain of my life.

Questions for Application and Discussion: 1. In what life circumstances (whether easy or hard) do I need to remind myself that “to live is Christ”? 2. Is there a suffering or fear over which I must say today, “to die is gain”?
