What Does Preschool Require of Me? Commitment: Each volunteer is expected to serve the entire 2018-2019 service year, and will be placed on the A or B service team. Team A generally serves the first two weeks of each month; Team B serves the last two weeks. A service schedule for the entire 2018-2019 service year will be provided at training. When there are five weekends within a month, please check the service schedule to see which team is responsible for the fifth week. Responsibility will alternate between teams. Volunteers serving only one week per month are EQUALLY responsible for service when their team is assigned week 5 coverage. The service schedule indicates that both the A and B teams are expected to serve the weekend of Sept. 89, 2018. Please note that this joint service is only required of the classroom teachers, and that it will be the responsibility of the Team A large group presenter, tech and worship teams to serve that weekend. Timeliness: Large group presenters and tech team volunteers are to arrive at the start of their assigned service (9:00 a.m. on Sunday for the first service, and 10:45 a.m. for the second service) in order to have adequate time to prepare for the large group lesson. Worship team members should arrive no later than 10 minutes before the start of the large group presentation. Please arrive 9:10 a.m. for Sunday first service, and 10:55 a.m. for Sunday second service. It is extremely important that you arrive on time! Involvement: Take ownership of your role in this ministry. Large group is where the main Bible lesson is taught to the preschool children. Every aspect of it is essential! Please come prepared and ready to serve. Team Building: During your service term, you may be asked to attend a Preschool meeting or additional training to help keep you up to date on relevant issues related to the ministry. Responsibility: If at any time you are unable to meet the requirements mentioned above, you will need to find someone to fulfill your commitment. Please see the provided Substitute Procedures (page 5) for further information. In case of an emergency or late arrival, please contact the Preschool Coodinator directly via email, text or phone. Please do not leave a message on the church voicemail. Note: Worship team members DO NOT need to secure substitutes. However, please notify the Preschool Director if you will miss. Share the Blessing: It is a privilege and an honor to serve our Lord and His children. If you know anyone who may enjoy using their gift in our ministry, please recruit them to serve. You are our best recruiter and we can always use more volunteers.

Courtesy Reminder Text On the Thursday preceding a Sunday that you serve, you will receive a courtesy reminder text. Please reply with one of the following:

5

YES – A simple yes will confirm your intention of fulfilling your commitment for the weekend.

No, my sub is ________ - If you are not able to fulfil your commitment, please respond with the name of the person we should expect in your stead. (Substitutes should be obtained following the procedure below.

Substitute Procedure If you cannot fulfill your duties in Preschool for any reason, YOU will need to find a substitute to take your place. A contact list has been provided to you, and will be periodically updated, for this purpose. To make sure that this process runs as smoothly as possible, please follow this plan of action: 1. Try to schedule a switch with the volunteer who serves on the opposite team at your same service hour. 2. If that person is not available, please try to switch with a volunteer who serves in your position at another service. 3. If you are on tech and still in need of a substitute, please advise the Preschool Coordinator. If you are a large group presenter, please try one of the large group presenter subs on the sub list. 4. When all else fails, please contact the Preschool Coordinator. Note: Please do not wait until the last minute to notify the Coordinator that you need help. Most issues can be handled if adequate warning is provided. Once you have found your sub, please email the Preschool Coordinator to inform her of the change. It is essential that we know who will be on site in case of an emergency or issue. After you find a substitute, please make every effort to make your substitute familiar with your responsibilities. Tech substitutes should be familiar with the equipment. Large group presenter subs should be forwarded a copy of the script so that he/she can be prepared.

6

Large Group Presenters: Things to Know 1. The large group scripts will be emailed to you before you serve. You must have an active email address to receive the scripts, so please promptly advise the Preschool Coordinator of any changes. Copies of the scripts will also be posted on Realm. Please review and be well acquainted with your script before serving. 2. A binder with the large group scripts will be in the Preschool large group room for you. This binder will be located in the “Preschool Large Group” bin. Any props that you will need to present your lesson will also be in that bin, and ready for your use. Please return the binder and props to the bin after you serve so that the next presenter knows where to find them. 3. Depending on your service slot, and the number of worship team members present, large group presenters may also need to lead and direct the worship portion of the large group time. Be prepared to do so! The songs will be listed in your script. You will be able to learn the songs and motions on your own time via online videos. Links to access the videos will be emailed to you. 4.

Please try to finish the lesson as close as possible to the suggested ending time. The classroom teachers need to have adequate time for snack and the follow-up activity. Note for Saturday Night Teachers: You will need to arrive early to make sure the tech is ready in the large group classroom before moving to the classroom. 5. All volunteers should check in at Room 425 on the iPad and pick-up your nametag before serving. If the information on your printed nametag is incorrect, please advise the Preschool Coordinator. 6. Large Group Presentation Tips:  Prepare: 1) PRAY: Pray for your own preparation and for the children to have understanding of the lesson. Also ask the Holy Spirit to equip you and to open the hearts of the children. 2) Know your script/bible story! - You don’t have to memorize it, but be familiar enough with it that you are not reading it off the page. The children will not pay attention if you are reading and not looking at them. - Focus on learning the main points so that you are sure to highlight those. - Practice the lesson, especially if you have lots of props and/or sound effects to utilize. 3) Arrive early and check the set-up. Make sure the teaching room is ready. - Verify that you have all your props. - Check in with the tech/sound person to make sure they understand how you want to time things. - Check in with any worship team members that are present. - Make sure the class cards are on the carpet circles. - Make time to pray with your team prior to the arrival of the children.

 Present: 1) Greet the children as they enter the room and direct them to the carpet circles. - Make the children feel welcome by saying hi, giving fives, saying their names (ON NAMETAGS), etc. Kids who feel you care will be more open to receiving your lesson. - Direct the children to their designated age appropriate carpet circles (keep the younger children towards the front to ensure that they are able to see the presenter). - Tech will play music as you wait for all the classrooms to arrive. Utilize this time to move from group to group engaging the children in small talk. All children should be wearing name tags which will allow you to address them by name. 2) Welcome, Rules, and Worship! - Once all classrooms have arrived, signal the sound tech to stop the music. - Welcome everyone to large group. Introduce yourself and go over few key behavioral expectations, such as keeping hands to yourself, listening, and being quiet when the teacher is talking. NOTE: For the past several years, the Preschool curriculum has utilized the “two rules”- Be safe and be kind. These rules will be listed in your script. - Invite the worship team up and begin worship. Signal tech to start the music! - During singing, maintain the rule that the children need to stay on their carpets. Encourage them to do the actions rather than hold hands with each other and spin circles (as this often gets out of hand).

8

3) Teach the lesson: - Speak loudly! - Be dramatic! Add your own personal flair, talent, style… - You may use a music stand for your script. The script should be available for you to refer to in case you forget something and/or lose track of where you are. - Always show them the Bible! Make sure they know that the story comes from the Bible, is true, and is God’s word to us. - If you make a mistake, don’t worry about it! The kids will never know (and if they do, just laugh with them!). - Feel free to re-word something if it would be more natural for you to say it another way. Just make sure to stick to the main points in the script and keep it simple. - Raise and lower your voice to highlight important parts of the story. - Feel free to move around! Walk out into the group. You can take the music stand with you if you need to! - Allow the kids to interact whenever possible. For example: patting their legs to make the sound of rain; saying things like, “touch your nose if you have ever seen the ocean;” and “raise your hand if you think Abraham should obey God.” - Ask yes/no questions that the group can answer. For example: “Do you think Jesus is going to heal the man?”; “Do you think God will answer their prayer?” etc. 4) Maintain control: - It is the primary responsibility of the classroom teachers to maintain control, but you can help. - Feel free to stop and wait for the kids to settle. You can wait until you have regained their attention before continuing. You can also use sayings to indicate that they need to pay attention better. For example: “remember our rule- to be kind by listening;” “let’s see how quiet we can be when I count to three;” or “let’s click on our listening ears again so we can listen better.” - Move around the room, which will naturally draw their attention- move into the group or stand in front of a carpet of kids that is being noisy; put your hand on the head of a child that is talking to remind them. - Realize that occasionally, things just won’t work. Despite your best efforts, the kids will be rowdy or noisy. Get through it and remind the children to do better next time. 5) Pray: - Pray after the lesson with the children and have the children join you in prayer. Explain that when we pray, we are talking to God. - Use “Open them, shut them, open them, shut them, give a little clap. Open them, shut them, open them, shut them, fold them in your lap.” to help get the children in a position to pray. - When praying with the children, it is effective to use short phrases and have them repeat after you. This gives them the opportunity to learn how to pray and begin to feel comfortable giving an audible voice to their prayers. 6) Dismiss the children: - Dismiss the children in an orderly fashion and encourage good behavior by letting the classes who are seated quietly leave first. Let them know you are looking to see who is ready to go back. * Please do not dismiss the children all at once. It is difficult for the teachers to keep the groups separate if you do that. - Help the teachers get the younger children into a line. If necessary, help escort a class back to their room.  Trust God! You can be faithful to do your part. God will use these lessons in whatever way He chooses to glorify Himself. Trust that He will!

Worship Team: Things to Know 1. As a member of the worship team, you will lead the worship portion of the Preschool large group time. This involves standing in front of the preschoolers and performing the hand motions for the songs. 2. You will be able to learn the songs and motions on your own time via online videos. An email will be sent to you with the links to the videos. Please review, practice, and be well acquainted with the song motions before serving. New songs will be added throughout the year. 3. The song list for the entire month will be emailed to you before the first Saturday/Sunday of the month. You must have an active email address to receive the song lists. Please let the Preschool Director know if your email changes or you do not receive the lists. 4.

Times to know: Service Sunday 9:00am Sunday 10:45am

Arrive 9:10am 10:55am

Note for 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade worship team members: After worship is complete, you will be escorted back to your class by the Team Leader or Preschool Coordinator. 5. Preschool worship occurs at the start of the large group presentation time. Please come up to the front of the room when the large group presenter starts worship time. You will perform approximately three songs. Once worship is over, you are free to leave. Younger worship team members will be escorted back to their class. 6. Worship team members are provided with t-shirts that are kept at The Bible Chapel. These tshirts will be in the Preschool large group room for you. All team members are asked to wear a tshirt for worship time so you present as a unit. Please return the t-shirt to the bin when worship is complete. 7. When you arrive, please get your t-shirt and run through the songs with any other present worship team members. A member of the tech team should be present to play the songs for you. 8. Some songs require a brief explanation by the large group presenter (or a member of the worship team) before the song can start. For example, “Hallelujah/Praise Ye the Lord” requires you to divide the children into two groups- a “Hallelujah” group and a “Praise Ye the Lord” group. Before the kids arrive at large group, please decide who will handle any needed explanations. 9. Help greet the children when they arrive for large group time! They will love that you want to speak with them! The children will all have nametags, so try and greet them by name. 10. Have fun with this! Remember that little eyes are watching you, and that the attitude you bring to worship will be imitated. Remember also that your audience is comprised of 3-5 year olds. If you mess up a hand motion, don’t stress because they probably won’t even notice!!!

10
