Prescription  Tips   First  make  a  list  of  your  prescriptions  including  the  drug  name  and  dosage.   Price  shop  each  prescription  at  several  pharmacies  (by  phone).    Prices  may  vary  considerably  even  by  more  than  $50.    One   particular  medication  for  example  is  $70/month  at  Meijer  and  $26/month  at  Costco  (discounted  for  those  with  no   prescription  coverage).    In  this  instance  the  $50  Costco  membership  is  recouped  after  only  one  month  with  a  yearly  savings   of  $528.   Discounts  for  patients  without  prescription  coverage:  Several  pharmacies  (including  Wal-‐Mart)  offer  special  discounts  for   patients  without  prescription  coverage.    Ask  the  pharmacist.   Generic  deals:  If  your  prescription  can  be  filled  with  a  generic  there  may  be  a  significant  price  savings.    Ask  the  pharmacist  if   the  generic  is  on  their  discounted  list.    Several  pharmacies  offer  a  list  of  $4  generic  medications  and  those  lists  are  usually   posted  and  updated  online.    Wal-‐Mart,  Kroger,  and  Giant  Eagle  offer  $4  prescriptions.    90  day  supplies  are  $10.    Wal-‐Mart   also  offers  generic  birth  control  at  discounted  prices.       Free  Antibiotics:  If  you  (or  your  child)  are  sick  and  are  going  to  see  a  doctor,  print  out  the  Meijer  list  of  free  antibiotics  and   take  it  with  you.    The  doctor  may  be  able  to  choose  from  the  list  of  free  medications.      You  may  even  double  check  by  calling   the  pharmacy  before  you  leave  the  doctor’s  office.    This  is  an  ongoing  promotion.    Check  their  website  or  call  the  pharmacy.   Prepare  before  going  to  doctor:  If  you  are  going  to  the  doctor  for  a  ‘well  visit’  print  a  list  of  $4  generic  prescriptions  and  take   it  with  you.    Review  your  medications  with  your  doctor  and  see  if  your  current  medication  could  be  replaced  with  one  of  the   $4  generics.    Ask  about  getting  the  prescription  written  for  90  days  since  this  usually  saves  the  most.   Read  Prescription  Insurance  Documents:  If  you  have  any  prescription  coverage  read  the  documents  carefully  and  take   advantage  of  any  prescription  by  mail  plan  if  it  reduces  costs.    Compare  here  too  because  it  is  possible  that  you  may  have  a   lower  cost  at  a  local  pharmacy  than  for  mail  order.    Compare  everything  (see  #1  for  incentive).   Talk  to  your  doctor:  Discuss  your  financial  situation  with  your  doctor.    Many  doctors  will  offer  discounts  on  your  office  visit,   samples  of  your  medication  and  possibly  manufacturer’s  coupons  or  special  deals  for  your  medication.       Contact  Drug  Manufacturer:  If  you  have  exhausted  your  options  and  cannot  get  your  medication  call  the  drug  manufacturer   or  your  local  drug  representative  (your  doctor  can  give  you  the  number).    They  may  be  able  to  provide  one-‐time  samples  to   your  doctor  for  you,  or  their  particular  drug  company  may  offer  programs  to  help.   Talk  to  your  doctor  and  pharmacist  about  your  financial  condition.    They  may  know  of  a  less  expensive  over-‐the-‐counter   medication  with  the  same  health  benefit.    This  may  especially  be  true  for  allergy  and  digestive  medications  as  many  drug   patents  have  expired  and  older  medications  have  become  over-‐the-‐counter.      For  example  Claritin  used  to  be  $70/month  for   a  prescription  until  the  patent  expired.  Then  it  sold  for  @  $1/pill  at  Wal-‐Mart  (or  $30/month).    Now  the  over-‐the-‐counter   generic  (Loratadine  10mg)  is  available  at  Costco  and  Sam’s  Club  -‐  300  pills  for  $12.       Veterans:  If  you  are  a  Veteran  inquire  about  any  health  benefits  at  your  VA.   Coupons  and  Specials:  Watch  the  Dispatch  and  your  grocery  register  coupons  for  special  offers  for  transferring  prescriptions.     Children:  If  un/under  employed  check  if  your  children’s  medication  &  medical  care  are  covered,  perhaps  through  Medicaid.       Clinics:  If  you  have  received  free  medical  care  from  a  clinic  inquire  as  to  whether  they  may  have  free  medicine.   Alternatives  sources  of  prescriptions:     o Partnership  for  Prescription  Assistance  www.pparx.org/   -‐ If  your  prescription  cannot  be  replaced  with  a  generic  and  you  are  not  able  to  afford  it  research  this  website.  You   will  need  to  provide  documentation  of  your  financial  situation  to  receive  free  medicines  from  the  drug   manufacturers.    Your  doctor  will  need  to  fax  or  you  may  mail  your  paper  prescription  to  them.    This  option   requires  some  paperwork  from  you  and  from  your  doctor.    You  will  need  to  re-‐apply  after  a  specified  period  of   time.    Not  all  drug  manufacturers  participate  so  this  will  require  some  research  and  time  on  your  part   o RX  for  Ohio  www.rxforohio.org           o Ohio’s  best  RX    www.ohiobestrx.org/  (may  be  discontinuing)   o Free  Drug  Card  www.freedrugcard.us  for  prescription  savings   o Prescription  Hope  http://www.prescriptionhope.com/     o Needy  Meds    http://www.needymeds.org/     Pray:  We  have  had  miraculous  things  happen  to  help  us  with  our  health  and  prescription  costs.

16.   Everyone’s  financial  and  prescription  situation  is  different  so  finding  the  absolute  lowest  price  for  your  prescriptions  will  require   some  effort  on  your  part.    Once  you  have  researched  and  found  the  lowest  price  for  your  medication  you  will  feel  a  strong   feeling  of  accomplishment.    For  those  with  ongoing  medication  needs  this  research  will  take  some  time  in  the  beginning,  but  you   will  reap  the  rewards  of  your  hard  work  every  time  you  get  your  prescriptions  refilled.     Prepared  by  Kent  and  Laura  Irwin
