of other countries while letting the U.S. military become depleted, and spent trillions abroad while allowing infrastructure at home to crumble. "The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes

and then redistributed across the entire world," he said. Trump accused the Washington establishment of protecting itself but abandoning regular citizens who have suffered from poverty and crime.

“This American carnage stops right here and stops right now," he said. "Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families," he said.

India celebrates 68th Republic Day NEW DELHI - India celebrated the anniversary of the day its constitution came into effect on Thursday with an elaborate display of military hardware and cultural events. The annual celebration included floats from the various Indian states and its defense and police forces. Abu Dhabi's crown prince, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was the guest of honor at Thursday's parade. A contingent of soldiers from the United Arab Emirates joined

Indian troops in the celebrations, attended by top Indian government and military officials as well as diplomats and thousands of ordinary people. The parade, which made its way through the wide, tree-lined roads of central Delhi, included acrobatic stunts on motorcycles, aerial displays and gallantry awards for the military. Last year, French President Francois Hollande was the guest of honor. In 2015, former President Barack Obama viewed the display.

WASHINGTON - Donald Trump, 70, took power as the 45th president of the United States last Friday and pledged to end what he called an "American carnage" of rusted factories and crime in an inaugural address that was a populist and nationalist rallying cry. Striking a defiant tone, Trump said American workers have been devastated by the outsourcing of jobs abroad. "From this day forward it is going to be only America First,” the Republican told crowds of people gathered on the National Mall to see him take over from Democrat Barack Obama. With Obama and three other former presidents sitting nearby, Trump accused previous U.S. administrations of enriching Washington at the expense of struggling American families. Trump said the United States has enriched foreign industry at the expense of American companies, subsidized the armies

Indian surrogate mothers grab last chance to make babies ahead of impending ban

By Roli Srivastava MUMBAI - Inside a bungalow in a plush residential area of Gurugram, on the outskirts of New Delhi, a group of women in different stages of pregnancy share the hope their babies will be delivered safely or risk losing the chance of big money, forever. Successful pregnancies have never been more important at this surrogacy center where every bed is taken following a jump in demand as India inches towards

banning commercial surrogacy. These women could be among the last in the country to rent their wombs for money if the Indian parliament passes a bill to outlaw commercial surrogacy - a 15year-old industry estimated to be worth as much as $2.3 billion annually - in its next session starting in February. India's surrogacy industry has come under attack by women's rights groups who say fertility clinics are "baby factories" for the rich, and that a lack of

regulation results in poor and uneducated women signing contracts they do not fully understand. Yet for some of the women, the bill aims to protect are currently queuing up for a last chance to make around 400,000 rupees ($5,900) money they said they could only dream of otherwise. Razia Sultana aged 32 had an embryo transferred into her uterus in the final week of December. Until six months ago, she arranged egg donors and

surrogates for infertility clinics, making 5,000 rupees for each referral, but decided to become a surrogate herself on the day she first heard about the ban. "My children supported my decision saying bearing a child was better than selling a kidney, which I was considering too," she mentioned. “These are small compromises. I have no other option to make this kind of money." The Indian government believes the ban will check unethical practices. "We are concerned about the

health of the surrogate mother and that the legal and financial rights of the child are protected," said Manoj Pant from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. “India wants to be on par with developed and developing nations that do not legitimize commercial surrogacy." Until the ban on surrogacy passes, India continues to be among a handful of countries where women can be paid to carry another's child through invitro fertilization and embryo transfer.

Which countries allow commercial surrogacy? Here's a look at laws in different parts of the world: Ÿ For-profit surrogacy is banned in Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, the UK and Australia (except for the Northern Territory which has no laws on the matter), but they all allow some forms of altruistic surrogacy. Ÿ Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain prohibit all forms of

surrogacy. Ÿ There is no legislation

concerning surrogacy at the federal level in the United States, and some states allow commercial surrogacy arrangements. Ÿ For-profit surrogacy flourished in Thailand until 2015 when the country banned it for foreigners after a series of high-profile cases, including an Australian couple who

were accused of abandoning a baby born with Down's syndrome. Ÿ Georgia and Ukraine have now emerged as the next surrogacy hubs as there are no laws or rules so far governing the sector, said surrogacy agencies. Ÿ Surrogacy is allowed in Russia, which is considered one of the most permissive countries for the practice.

Trump U.N. pick echoes his criticism but breaks from him on issues

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley testifies before a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing on her nomination to be to U.S. ambassador to the United Nations at Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. on January 18, 2017.

By Patricia Zengerle and Arshad Mohammed WASHINGTON - Donald Trump's pick for U.N. ambassador echoed his condemnation of the world body and pledged to push for reforms at her confirmation hearing on Wednesday, but broke from the president-elect on some other policy issues, including Russia and NATO. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley seconded criticism of the

United Nations by Trump and many of their fellow Republicans before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, especially for what she termed its "bias" against Israel. Some Republicans want to stop U.S. funding for the United Nations over a Security Council resolution last month demanding an end to settlement building that the United States declined to veto, instead of abstaining. Haley pledged that she would

not abstain on U.N. votes. But she did not back "slashing" U.N. funding. The United States provides 22 percent of the U.N. budget. Trump took to Twitter in the wake of the Israel vote to criticize the 193-member world body as "just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time." He warned "things will be different" after he takes office, without offering details. Haley said Washington should always back Israel. "If we always stand with them, more countries will want to be our allies," she said. Haley said she "absolutely" backs moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. That shift, which would up-end decades of U.S. policy, is supported by Trump and congressional Republicans but seen by the Palestinians and many Arab states as an impediment to Middle East peace. Although some Democrats questioned Haley's lack of diplomatic experience, she is expected to be approved. At the end of the mostly non-contentious hearing, Senator Bob Corker, the committee's Republican chairman, said he

expected she would be confirmed "overwhelmingly." Haley, a rising star in the Republican party who turns 45 on Friday when Trump takes office, has only held office in South Carolina. She has been governor

Trump taps Commissioner Ajit Pai to head FCC WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Monday tapped Republican Commissioner Ajit Pai to head the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, which is expected to roll back many of the Obama Administration's telecommunications and internet policies. Pai, a former Justice Department, FCC and Capitol Hill staffer, in December predicted landmark "net neutrality" rules adopted in 2015 would not last. The son of Indian immigrants who grew up in Kansas, Pai said the commission should take a "weed whacker" to unneeded rules and was harshly critical of many FCC regulations imposed during the Obama administration. tion, we will shift from playing defense at the FCC to going on offense," he said in December. "We need to fire up the weed whacker and remove those rules that are holding back investment, innovation, and job creation." Pai will also have a key role in deciding whether to approve or reject or impose conditions on mergers involving cable and telephone companies. In May, Pai opposed FCC conditions imposed on Charter Communication's acquisition of Time Warner Cable. Days ago, then FCC chairman Tom Wheeler urged Republicans against dismantling internet access protections that bar service providers from slowing consumer access to web content.

Modi in a spin as he replaces Gandhi as face of India's homespun cotton

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has replaced independence hero Mahatma Gandhi as the 2017 face of the government's traditional handloom and cotton industry, triggering criticism.

By Tommy Wilkes NEW DELHI - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has replaced independence hero Mahatma Gandhi as the 2017 face of the government's traditional handloom and cotton industry, triggering criticism

last Friday. The image of the bespectacled Gandhi, wearing a loincloth and sitting cross-legged at a spinning wheel, is one of India's most iconic and has long been used to promote the khadi, or homespun cotton, industry. The government-run Khadi

Village Industries Commission (KVIC) defended its decision to use a photo of Modi, sitting in an almost identical pose while spinning cotton, on the cover of its 2017 calendar and diary. "He is khadi's biggest brand ambassador," Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena told media. Saxena said figures other than Gandhi had been used as the faces of the calendar before, and that Modi deserved the honor because he had helped boost cotton sales. Some KVIC workers staged a silent protest after seeing the new calendar, media reported. Opposition leaders were quick to ridicule the image. "Becoming Gandhi requires years of self-sacrifice," Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi and a political opponent of Modi, tweeted in Hindi. "You cannot become Gandhi by acting as if you can spin the charkha (spinning wheel) - this will only make you a laughing stock." Modi, who stormed to power in 2014 in the biggest election

victory in 30 years, has long played up his humble roots as the son of a railway station tea seller. But he has also been accused of self-aggrandizement and being out of touch - he auctioned a controversial tailored suit in 2015 that bore his name in

gold pinstripes. Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party said the row over the calendar had been overblown. His minister of micro, small and medium enterprises, Kalraj Mishra, said there was no question of Modi or anyone else replacing Gandhi.

American man arrested in India for online child porn By Jatindra Dash BHUBANESWAR - A 42year-old American has been arrested in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on suspicion of circulating child pornography on the internet, police said on Thursday, adding that they were investigating whether any of the victim s had been trafficked. The man, working for a multinational law firm in Hyderabad since 2012, was arrested after police were alerted by Interpol to an IP address linked to online images and videos of children being

sexually abused. Ukkalam Rama Mohan, the police superintendent in charge of fighting cyber crime in Telangana state, whose capital is Hyderabad, said the suspect had confessed to publishing and transmitting obscene images electronically. “We found several thousands of pornographic images and videos on his laptop and iPhone which he had collected since long," Rama Mohan told Reuters Foundation by phone. The man, who is from New Jersey in the United States, could not be contacted.

Indian election commission backs son in family dispute over party

Newly appointed Samajwadi Party (SP) president and chief minister of northern state of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav (C) poses for the media at the release of the party’s manifesto for the upcoming assembly polls, at the party’s headquarters in Lucknow, India on January 22, 2017.

By Tommy Wilkes NEW DELHI - India's election commission last Monday backed the leader of the country's biggest state in his battle with his father for control of their party, a feud Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to exploit in a crucial election. After a months-long dispute

that has dominated headlines, the commission ruled that Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav could use the party name and symbol, and not patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav. The Yadavs' Samajwadi Party has ruled Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous and politically important region, since 2012, and is one of the biggest opponents of

Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party in the state election that begins in February. A party split would play into the hands of the BJP, which is campaigning hard to win the state. Victory would help Modi eventually control the upper house of parliament, where he lacks a majority, and give him momentum as he prepares to seek a second term in national elections in 2019. The group "led by Shri Akhilesh Yadav is the Samajwadi Party and is entitled to use its name and its reserved symbol 'Bicycle'," the commission said in its judgment. Akhilesh, a 43-year-old held up as the modern face of his party, has polled as voters' preferred chief ministerial candidate in a poor and politically volatile state where votes are won on caste and religious lines. "The Samajwadi party has shot itself in the foot with this squabbling," political analyst Amulya Ganguli told Reuters. Modi has held a series of rallies

across the state, turning his controversial policy to abolish high-denomination banknotes into the centerpiece of the campaign.

Recent opinion polls, often unreliable in India, put the BJP in second place or as the frontrunner in Uttar Pradesh, one of five states headed to the polls.

At least 24 children killed when bus, truck collide in India LUCKNOW - A truck loaded with sand collided with a school bus, killing at least 24 young children in the Northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said. At least two dozen other children were injured when the speeding truck collided head-on with the bus, said Javeed Ahmed, the state's top police official. The children, between the ages of 3 and 14, were studying at a school in the town of Etah. Another police officer, Daljeet Chaudhry, said visibility was low due to dense fog. Police officer Parasuram Singh said the truck driver suffered serious injuries to his legs, which were amputated at a

hospital. The area is about 270 kilometers (170 miles) southeast of New Delhi. State education authorities had closed all schools in the district because of a severe cold wave, and Ahmed said authorities would check why the school had stayed open. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences, saying: “Anguished by tragic accident in UP's Etah. I share the pain of the bereaved families & condole (the) passing away of young children.'' Accidents are common on Indian roads, with most blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.

At least 39 killed as train derails in Andhra Pradesh

People stand near the derailed coaches of a passenger train near Kuneru village in Vizianagaram district, in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, India on January 22, 2017.

By Jatindra Dash and Suvashree Choudhury BHUBANESWAR - At least 39 people were killed and 50 injured last Saturday night when nine coaches of a passenger train derailed in Eastern India in the latest disaster to hit the vast and accident-prone state railways, police said. The Hirakhand express train from Jagdalpur to Bhubaneswar derailed at about 11:20 pm (IST) near Kuneri station in Andhra

Pradesh, about 30 km from the town of Rayagada. "The rescue operation is almost over," said J.P. Mishra, the chief public relations officer at East Coast Railway, which has jurisdiction over the area where the derailment occurred. "Our first priority is to take care of the injured passengers and provide proper treatment by shifting them to hospitals. We are also searching all the coaches to ensure that nobody remains stranded in them."

The reason for the derailment has not been ascertained, Mishra said, adding that they were not ruling out the possibility of foul play and investigations will be conducted. The area in which the incident occurred is one where Maoist rebels typically operate. Video footage from the scene showed members of the disaster management team and locals trying to rescue trapped passengers from windows and debris using phones to provide light. “We will take strict action against whoever is behind this act," said Indian railways minister Suresh Prabhu. "We won't spare anyone responsible for this accident." Nine bogies were derailed of which three fell off the track, said local Superintendent of Police L.K.V. Ranga Rao, adding that most of the casualties and deaths were from the three sleeper-class compartments. The track repair operations will go on through the night, East Coast Railway's Mishra said, adding that he expects train service to be normalised by early Monday morning. India's state railways, built during British colonial rule, have

an appalling safety record after decades of underinvestment and a priority on keeping fares low for the 23 million passengers who use the network every day. In the last serious accident, 150 people died when a train derailed late last year in Uttar Pradesh. India recorded 27,581 railway deaths in 2014, the most recent year for which figures are available, with most victims falling from, or being struck by, moving trains.

“Anguished to learn about the train accident near Vizianagaram," Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, said on Twitter, offering his condolences to the families of the victims. "We are investigating the reason for accident." Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted that the tragedy was "saddening" and said that the railways ministry was working to ensure quick relief and rescue operations.

Indian women “occupy the night streets” to protest reported mass molestation NEW DELHI - Hundreds of women gathered in over 30 towns and cities across India late on last Saturday, saying they were "occupying the night streets" to demand safety in public spaces after reports of the mass molestation of women in Bengaluru city on New Year's Eve. From the capital New Delhi to Kolkata in the east, Chennai in the south and Mumbai in the west, activists, students, and professionals gathered at marches and street plays or sang songs and recited poetry on equality for

women. The participants, which also included many men, chanted slogans such as "Freedom, Freedom, Freedom!" and held banners saying "Take back the night. Break the silence. End the violence" and "Nobody asks what my molester was wearing.” Sex crimes are common in India, where the National Crime Record Bureau says more than 34,000 rapes were reported in 2015, although women sometimes do not report assaults for fear of the associated social stigma.

India pressed ahead with banknote ban despite RBI concerns

A cashier displays the new 2000 Indian rupee banknotes inside a bank in Jammu on November 15, 2016.

By Rajesh Kumar Singh and Suvashree Choudhury NEW DELHI - India pushed ahead with its decision to scrap banknotes even as the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) own board expressed concern whether the cash could be replaced quickly enough, the central bank has said in written testimony to parliament. The revelation comes amid growing criticism about whether the central bank and the government had sufficiently assessed

the potential fallout from the Nov. 8 ban of about 86 percent of the cash then in circulation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's shock move caused a severe cash shortage that brought large parts of the economy to a virtual standstill, as the central bank struggled to print new 500rupee and 2,000-rupee notes to replace the old currency. A copy of the private testimony to a parliament panel, seen by Reuters, showed the central bank had also warned the government of "possible inconvenience to the

public for some time," among the potential consequences of the massive exercise. Despite its own doubts, the testimony showed, the RBI board approved the plan to ban 500rupee and 1,000-rupee notes, as it believed the move would rein in counterfeiting and reliance on cash, and pull unaccounted cash into the financial system. But the RBI's board ultimately believed that "corrective" action could be taken and decided to recommend the move, the document showed. The RBI also believed the impact of such an exercise would be "transitory", given its efforts to quickly replace the old notes, it said in the testimony. The RBI's endorsement of the government action has drawn strong criticism from several former policymakers, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the architect of India's 1991 financial reforms and a former central bank governor. The document also notes the proposal to ban the cash had come from the government, in a letter a day before the announce-

ment that advised the RBI to "immediately" put the plan before its board for approval. Under India's RBI Act, such a move was necessary. The central bank did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comments on its submission to parliament. "PAINFUL" FOR RBI Since Modi declared the ban, the central bank has been forced

to announce a barrage of measures to soften the impact, including several high-profile reversals, undermining confidence in it. In a letter to RBI Governor, unions of central bank employees called such criticism "painful", and accused the government of steering decisions behind the replacement of the banned notes, saying that "blatantly encroaches" on the central bank's jurisdiction.

RBI has pumped in 9.2 trillion rupees of new notes - source By Nigam Prusty NEW DELHI - The Reserve Bank of India has injected 9.2 trillion rupees ($135.21 billion) worth of new currency notes into the banking system to help replace the notes banned in November, a parliamentary panel member quoted central bank governor Urjit Patel as saying days ago. Patel met the panel on finance to answer questions about the Nov. 8 abolition of 500- and 1,000-rupees notes, or 86 percent

of the currency then in circulation, in a bid to unearth billions of dollars of unaccounted money. About 15.4 trillion rupees worth of the notes were removed from circulation. Patel, however, failed to provide any figure for how many of the banned notes had been deposited into the banking system and he did not provide clarity on when the cash situation would become normal, according to a second member of the panel who was also present at the appearance.

India's top court dismisses plea to delay annual budget A panel headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar found no merit in a public interest litigation by lawyer M.L. Sharma, who had called for the budget to be delayed until after a round of five regional elections. The case was motivated by fears that Prime Minister

Narendra Modi's government could offer budget giveaways to attract votes in state assembly elections to be held in February and March. The most important poll is being held in Uttar Pradesh, a northern battleground state with a population of more than 200 REUTERS/Amit Dave/File photo

NEW DELHI - India's Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition to delay the annual federal budget, which Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is scheduled to deliver on Feb. 1, dismissing concerns about potential giveaways ahead of critical state polls.

Air India says women-only seats for comfort after reported in-flight sex attacks By Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI - Air India will introduce women-only seats on its domestic flights to give female passengers more choice and comfort, said a senior official from the national carrier, rejecting claims the move was linked to reports of in-flight sex attacks. From Wednesday, Air India will allocate six seats in the third row of its economy class cabin for solo women travellers - making it the only airline in India, and possibly the world, to take this step, said the official. India already has policies which segregate women from men on

public transport to avoid sexual harassment and molestation. Many trains - both underground and overground - have carriages reserved for women, and some buses have women-only seats. “We are doing this as we get lots of requests by female passengers at the check-in counter who want to sit next to another woman, rather than a male passenger," said G. Prasada Rao, Air India's general manager for corporate communications. "It is not connected to the reports of sexual assaults. It's more to do with the fact that economy class doesn't have much space to move around easily and

comfortably for women, so this option will give them more choice." Rao said that seats would be offered at no extra cost and would be available for up to an hour before check-in closed. The airline may also extend this policy to international flights, after measuring its effectiveness on domestic routes, he added. There are numerous reports of women being groped or "touched up" on crowded buses or on trains and even on flights. In some cases, victims have taken to social media - posting videos and photographs of the perpetrators - to report the assaults.

million. The election is expected to be the biggest democratic exercise anywhere in the world this year. A good showing is critical for Modi, and his Bharatiya Janata Party, if he is to stand a good chance of winning re-election in the 2019 general election. Separately, the election commission was due to rule on a similar call for the budget to be delayed. Its Model Code of Conduct bans governments from

using administrative resources to solicit votes. Voting kicks off in the western breadbasket state of Punjab and the western resort state of Goa on Feb. 4. It will be held in seven stages across Uttar Pradesh from Feb. 11; and will wrap up in the north-eastern states of Uttarakhand and Manipur. Results of all the elections, which will eventually be reflected in parliament's upper house, are due in mid-March.

Indian tailor confesses to sexually assaulting "hundreds" of school girls says police "During interrogation he told us that at least once a week he would come from Rudrapur and, in order to satisfy his pedophile lust, he would target girls between the ages of seven and ten years old." Rastogi was charged with

rape, aggravated penetrative sexual assault of a minor, and criminal intimidation, in the three cases, said police, and is also being investigated for related pedophile crimes. Police said that Rastogi could not remember the exact number

of girls he had sexually assaulted since 2004, but said it could be "hundreds". Wearing a red, white and green striped sweater and a red balaclava covering his face, Rastogi was paraded in front of the media, days ago.

After convicted paedophile arrested, Indian minister calls for sex offenders register By Nita Bhalla

Sunil Rastogi, a 38-year-old tailor was arrested by police investigating sexual assaults on three girls aged between nine and ten in eastern Delhi in January and December.

By Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI - A tailor in India has confessed to abducting, molesting and raping "hundreds" of schoolgirls over the last decade, said Delhi police, uncovering what may be one of the biggest serial pedophile cases in the country in recent times. Sunil Rastogi, a 38-year-old married man with five children,

was arrested last Saturday by police investigating the sexual assault of three girls aged nine and ten in the east of the Indian capital. "This criminal, Sunil Rastogi, is from Rudrapur in Uttar Pradesh, and is a tailor by profession," Omvir Singh Bishoi, East Delhi's deputy commissioner of police, told a news conference on Sunday.

NEW DELHI - India's minister for women and child development says the country needs to establish a national register of sex offenders, after police arrested a convicted paedophile who confessed to abducting and raping "hundreds" of girls for over a decade. Sunil Rastogi, a 38-year-old tailor was arrested by police investigating sexual assaults on three girls aged between nine and ten in eastern Delhi in January and December. Maneka Gandhi, minister for women and child development,

suggested that attacks may have been prevented if her proposal for a national register of sex offenders had been implemented. "About two years ago, I had repeatedly said, and asked for in writing, that we need to have a national register of sex offenders," Gandhi told NDTV in an interview late on Monday. "This tailor has apparently been caught before in 2006, so if he has been caught before, why is his name not on a national register of sexual offenders?" Gandhi said the proposal was currently with the ministry of home affairs, which was planning

to set up a national register of all criminals, including sex offenders. “It's really important to have one register with convicted sexual offenders, and I even say have another one with sexual offenders who are on trial," she said. Latest data from India's National Crime Records Bureau reveals reports of sexual offences such as molestation, harassment and paedophilia on the rise. For example, there were 34,651 rapes reported in 2015 - a 36 percent increase from 22,172 reports in 2010. The minister said foreigners also needed to be monitored.

REAL ESTATE ADVERTORIAL

A life among friends - An active retirement for Desi Boomers

Vinod Khilnani

What would the retirement plan for a chief executive officer of a multi-million dollar firm be? Apparently, not sit back and enjoy his golden years, according to Vinod Khilnani, a gentleman who retired as the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of CTS Corporation in January 2013. Despite being elected to the boards of four publicly traded corporations, in his mind, diving into a project as mammoth as developing a community of 84 active senior residences sounds about right! "For the last 20 years, I would meet up with friends from all over

the world, and we would discuss how wonderful it would be if we all could retire together. But where to find a place where all of us, like-minded people, would be able to live comfortably together? And also have "refrigerator rights" on at least half the homes on the street!" The "refrigerator rights" concept is where any of the residents enjoy the privilege of walking into a home on their street and feel comfortable opening the fridge and helping themselves to something. More of an early last century concept, it still holds appeal for people who are comfortable with each other to that degree – even though it speaks of a different time and era. The decision to actually create these homes under the banner of Nalanda Estates came to Mr. Khilnani post-retirement. "My wife thought I'd lost it. She said, 'Why can't you just relax and travel the world, as originally planned? We should spend more time with the family.'” he reminisces with amusement. “However, it is the encouragement and support of family and friends which ultimately made the difference and I decided to move forward,” he says. But it was tough to figure out a

retirement community where you would find the upwardly mobile retired senior, who wasn't all about being completely Indian, but was better integrated into American life and culture. Nalanda offers detached homes as well as some paired villas, with sizes ranging from 1,730 to 3,200 square feet. Located in Brandenton, Florida, the estate is strategically located between Ta m p a , S a r a s o t a a n d S t . Petersburg. It has easy access to major airports, shopping malls, hospitals and beaches. “The idea is one of a retirement wherein we can all have fun, yet grow intellectually and contribute to the community at the same time! Three million plus IndianAmericans are among the most educated and successful minority ethnic group in the U.S., and a sizable percentage of this group is now ready for active retirement. They are successful and ambitious and are not just going to sit around during retirement. They clearly have some unique needs and high expectations, and that is the need we hope to fulfill,” says Mr. Khilnani. The most important thing is that when he looked for investors, he found people who were mostly focused on maximizing their

financial returns. This is the reason that most of the financing for the project comes from him. “The people associated with this project need to be interested in creating a unique community and be proud of it. I want people who feel as strongly about this concept as I do. This is why every penny invested, at this point, is mine. I do have a couple of investors who believe in this project and are good friends,” he says. But wasn't this a tough call, considering that he has only a limited background in this business? “I think if you have the drive and the clarity on what you want, and engage the best architects and builders, it isn't really rocket science,” he says, with unassailable logic. A home in Nalanda makes it possible for you to live your life as you've always lived it – and yet be close to your roots back in India. The generation of immigrants that retires in the near future is still one that feels a deep enough connection with the country where they were born, but are equally ensconced and comfortable in their lives here to not want to return. This balance is what residents of Nalanda Estates can expect to find.

“I am focusing on people who want to have fun, demand quality of life, are active and want to continue learning and growing. They should also have the opportunity to give back to the community if they so choose. They are close to their life in India, but are equally integrated in the American lifestyle as well,” says Mr. Khilnani. The entire community will be gated, therefore safety will be taken care of. A large clubhouse will be the center of attraction, with a banquet hall which will accommodate 160 to 170 people, there will be kitchen facilities, a state of the art fitness center, theater/media room, library/cards room, and a snack/wine bar are also planned. In addition, there will also be a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, a fire pit and a pickle ball court. There will be picturesque walking trails too. There will also be a host of organized activities such as yoga sessions and celebration of festivals. As far as retirement projects go, it's quite an impressive attempt on part of Mr. Khilnani. “Meeting the needs of this segment of the Indian-American community is very motivating and exciting,” he says. And a worthwhile legacy!

Kaabil Banner: FilmKraft Productions Producer: Rakesh Roshan Director: Sanjay Gupta Starring: Hrithik Roshan Yami Gautam Ronit Roy Rohit Roy Music By: Rajesh Roshan Salim-Sulaiman

In Sanjay Gupta’s past filmography (which includes films like “Jazbaa” and “Shootout at Wadala”), it is only natural that you arrive for the screening of his latest film with low

Indian court acquits Salman Khan of using illegal arms

expectations. Perhaps because of this, or because Hrithik Roshan brought his A game after what seems like ages, “Kaabil” (Able) is a surprisingly easy-to-watch film that keeps its eye on the ball. Roshan plays Rohan Bhatnagar, a blind voice artist who does not consider his lack of sight a handicap and maximizes the use of his other senses. He finds love in Supriya (Yami Gautam), who is also blind, and the two lead such an idyllic and at times saccharine domestic life for the first 45 minutes that it is easy to presume tragedy is lurking around the corner. Sure enough, the neighbourhood strongman, Amit (Rohit Roy), who has had his eye on Supriya for a while, accosts her while she is alone at home and rapes her. Their peaceful life shattered, Rohan and Supriya never recover. When yet another

tragedy befalls him, and the police, under pressure from Amit’s powerful politician brother does nothing to help, Rohan (Ronit Roy) decides that revenge is his for the taking. Gupta is uncharacteristically muted in his treatment of the film. There is none of the over-the-top emotion that we saw in his last film “Jazbaa”, and hardly any screeching background music. Just as Rohan plans his revenge with minimum fuss, Gupta also adopts a hassle-free approach to narrating his story. The second half is shorn of trimmings, and save for a stray flashback sequence where Rohan reminisces about the past, the story focuses on his meticulous destruction of the people who ruined his life. Since he is in almost every frame, Roshan is undoubtedly the focus of “Kaabil”, and he utilizes

it to the fullest. This is the most confident performance we have seen from him since Zoya Akhtar ’s “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”, and his performance lends credence to what would otherwise be just another one of the overdone revenge sagas. As the powerful politician who finds himself at the receiving end of the protagonist’s ire, Ronit Roy is his usual menacing self, and Yami Gautam is convincing as the sweet girl-next-door, despite her tendency to smile a tad too much. “Kaabil” may not be in the class of 2015’s “Badlapur” when it comes to exploring the nature of vendetta, but it does not discredit the genre either, and the credit should rest on the shoulders of its leading man. Salman Khan was acquitted by a court last Wednesday on a charge of using unlicensed weapons while hunting for rare blackbucks in a western India wildlife preserve 18 years ago. Khan, 51, was present as Chief Judicial Magistrate Dalpat Singh Rajpurohit announced his acquittal in Jodhpur, a city in Rajasthan state. H i s a t t o r n e y, H a s t i m a l Saraswat, said the magistrate dismissed the charge against Khan for lack of evidence. If convicted, he would have faced up to seven years in prison. The prosecution argued that the license for a revolver and a rifle allegedly used by Khan had expired in 1998. As Khan's fans cheered his acquittal, he tweeted: “Thank you for all the support and good wishes.” The Indian court system is notoriously slow, and it often takes years and even decades for cases to go to trial. Apart from the illegal weapons case, police filed three poaching cases against Khan during the shooting of one of his films in Jodhpur in 1998. He was convicted by a lower court and sentenced to jail terms of one and five years in two cases. But the actor challenged the verdict in a higher court, which said there was no evidence to suggest that the pellets recovered from the animals were fired from Khan's gun.

India's Tata Sons names insider Chandrasekaran as new chairman

Tata Sons chairman-designate Natarajan Chandrasekaran poses after a news conference in Mumbai, India.

MUMBAI - India's $100 billion salt-to-software Tata conglomerate named veteran insider Natarajan Chandrasekaran as the new

chairman of its holding company last Thursday, looking to soothe investors after a bruising public spat over the ouster of his

predecessor. Chandrasekaran, 53, currently chief executive of IT outsourcing giant Tata Consultancy Services , India's most-valuable company with a market capitalization of $67 billion, will take over as Tata Sons executive chairman on Feb. 21, according to a company statement. Tata Sons, the holding company in a business empire ranging from car maker Jaguar Land Rover and steel mills to aviation and salt pans, is embroiled in a legal battle with former chairman Cyrus Mistry, who was forced out in October. It has convened an extraordinary general meeting on Feb. 6 to remove him as a director, which Mistry has challenged. "The first thing for him to do will be to clean up the muck and get rid of all the ongoing court cases," said a Tata group insider

Kingfisher's Mallya charged in loan default case By Douglas Busvine and Rahul Bhatia MUMBAI - Vijay Mallya, the Indian liquor and aviation tycoon, was charged on Tuesday with conspiracy and fraud connected to a 9 billion rupee ($132 million) loan granted by a governmentowned bank, a spokesman for the Central Bureau of Investigation said. The head of the Force India Formula One team and a former owner of an Indian Premier League cricket team, one-time billionaire Mallya moved to Britain last March after being pursued in courts by banks seeking to recover about $1.4 billion the Indian authorities claim is owed by his Kingfisher airline. The CBI, in its charge-sheet, accused Mallya of diverting from India 2.54 billion rupees intended for the now-defunct airline. In total, charges were brought

against Mallya and nine other people, as well as the airline itself. A former chairman and managing director of the government bank, IDBI Bank Ltd, was arrested along with another four bank executives. The CBI also arrested the airline's chief financial officer and three senior officials. The CBI spokesperson said the officials would be held in judicial custody until Monday, pending a bail hearing. A spokesman for Mallya coud not immediately be reached for comment despite calls and a text message. The arrests made were the first since 2014, when the CBI initiated an enquiry into loans provided by the bank to the already debt-ridden airline. The Mallya case has emerged against the backdrop of regulatory scrutiny over bank loans to overextended companies.

The diplomatic passport Mallya was issued after becoming a member of Indian parliament's upper house was revoked in April 2016 after a non-bailable warrant for his arrest was issued. The Indian authorities had sought ways to have Mallya, who has said he is living in "forced exile", deported by Britain. In an interview with Reuters in 2016, Mallya said that he owed half of what was being reported. He also said he would return to India on the condition that he was "assured of a fair trial... if at all there needs to be a trial." The CBI action against Mallya may open the doors for India to begin work on a formal extradition process, after Britain rebuffed India's deportation request last year. The CBI refused to comment on possible extradition proceedings when contacted by Reuters on Tuesday.

who is close to Chandrasekaran, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Second will be to win over the trust of other Tata executives. And the third will be to define the direction for the group." Chandrasekaran takes the helm at a time when several companies in the conglomerate have seen profits come under pressure. Former chairman Mistry has warned of big writedowns and stressed the need for governance reforms at Tata Sons, the charitable trusts that own two-thirds of the holding firm, and Tata group companies. Tata Sons has denied Mistry's accusations. Chandrasekaran, a former Tata Group intern widely known as Chandra, said in a statement he was "humbled and honored" to be chosen to lead Tata Sons. "At the Tata Group, we are at an inflection point. I am aware that this role comes with huge responsibilities," he said in a statement. UNANIMOUS CHOICE A masters degree holder in computer applications, Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and rose through the ranks to become TCS CEO in 2009. He was named to the Tata Sons board in October, after Mistry's ouster. Chandrasekaran also serves on the board of India's central bank. A biography on the central bank's website describes him as an avid photographer, music aficionado and a passionate longdistance runner who has completed marathons across the world. Although the appointment of a group lifer shows a desire for continuity, Chandrasekaran is not related to the Tata family and will be the first non-Parsi chairman of Tata Sons.

Aviation ministry says gets 45 bids to fly regional routes NEW DELHI - India has received 45 initial bids from 11 parties to fly regional routes under a new scheme launched last year to boost air travel between smaller cities, the civil aviation ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. The initial bid proposals submitted before a Monday deadline cover more than 200 routes and as many as 65 airports, 52 of them not served by any airline, the statement added. India launched the Regional Connectivity Scheme to get more people flying in what is already the world's fastest growing aviation market. Under the scheme, the government has capped fares and is offering incentives to attract airlines to fly less traversed routes.

India to levy service tax on freight for imports NEW DELHI - Overseas exporters chartering foreign vessels to supply goods to India will have to pay a service tax on freight, a government notification said. It will be the same as the 4.5 percent service tax that India currently levies on free-on-board (FOB) cargoes, where the ship is chartered by a local buyer. Prior to the change, imports in foreign ships hired by the overseas seller - known as on a cost and freight (CFR) basis have been exempt from this charge. Indian government wants Apple, but not all officials are biting

An iPhone is seen on display at a kiosk at an Apple reseller store in Mumbai, India on January 12, 2017.

By Sanjeev Miglani and Rajesh Kumar Singh NEW DELHI - Some Indian officials have balked at Apple's demands for concessions before it assembles iPhones there, raising doubts about a spring deadline to launch a key project in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign to lure foreign investors. The country is still keen for the U.S. tech giant to produce its signature smartphones there, and Information Technology

Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Wednesday that India would keep an "open mind" in negotiations. "We will very much like Apple to come and have a base in India," he said. But Apple Inc's long list of demands, including tax concessions and several other policy exceptions, still faces resistance from officials who consider it excessive and unfair on foreign companies already operating in India. Their caution underlines how

Modi's ambition to make India a global manufacturing hub, in order to drive the economy and create jobs for millions of people entering the workforce each year, will not be easy. "We have not done this for anyone," said a senior government official whose department

is one of several involved in evaluating the Apple proposal. "If we do this, we must see a lot of value addition." Another official involved in the review said the government should make policies for the industry, not individual companies.

"Apple is coming here because it sees a lucrative market, this is not a favor being done to India." Competitors such as South Korea's Samsung Electronics and China's Xiaomi have already set up manufacturing in the country. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Spice Jet plots expansion with order for 100 new Boeing planes By Aditi Shah and Tommy Wilkes NEW DELHI - Indian budget airline SpiceJet said last Friday it has agreed to acquire 100 new MAX 737 aircraft from Boeing, with an option for 50 more, as part of its expansion plans in the world's fastest growing aviation market. The deal is a welcome boost for Boeing in India, where SpiceJet is the U.S. company's only major customer among the budget carriers now dominating the country's air industry.

"This is an extremely competitive market," Ajay Singh, SpiceJet's chairman, told a news conference in New Delhi. "What this aircraft order does is enhance our ability to be competitive in the future as it helps us reduce costs," said Singh, whose airline has about 13 percent of the Indian passenger market, while market leader IndiGo has 40 percent. SpiceJet, which was briefly forced to ground its fleet in late 2014 when it ran out of cash, is the fourth-largest Indian airline behind InterGlobe Aviation's

IndiGo, Jet Airways and state-run Air India. Asia, especially India, is a key market for planemakers, with analysts expecting Indian passenger numbers to more than triple over the next 20 years as millions more people become wealthy enough to fly for the first time. Combined, local airlines like IndiGo, as well as GoAir, have already ordered hundreds of new planes from Airbus. Meanwhile Boeing estimates India will need 1,850 new aircraft worth $265 billion by 2036 to meet demand for air travel.

'Growing Up Smith' Interview with rising star Roni Akurati CHICAGO - For the past 10 years, Roni Akurati, 14, has lived in Lake Zurich but he has been spending more of his time lately in Los Angeles to work on his acting career. Akurati is the lead actor in the film "Growing Up Smith," a coming-of-age comedy about an Indian boy growing up in smalltown America in 1979. The movie will be released at AMC South Barrington 30, 175 Studio Drive, South Barrington, on Feb. 3. Akurati also has appeared in various Chicago theater productions, including a starring role as Mowgli in The Goodman Theatre & Huntington Theater's production of 'The Jungle Book,' Tiny Tim in The Goodman Theatre's production of 'A Christmas Carol' and other productions for Lyric Opera of Chicago and Gorilla Tango Theatre, according to a news release. SYNOPSIS When an Indian family moves to America in 1979 with the hope of living the American dream, their 10-year-old son, Smith, falls for the girl next door. With an American dream of his own, Smith strives to become a “good ol' boy,” propelling him and his

family further away from their traditional ideals than ever before. Smith's family tries to straddle the line between embracing the American dream and preserving their Indian heritage, but Smith sneaks out for a taste of Kentucky Fried Chicken, dons a "Saturday Night Fever" costume, and contends with his parents as they send him to school with a yellow squash instead of a pumpkin to carve for Halloween. And as Smith falls head over heels in love with Amy, he finds in Amy's father, Butch, the all-American cowboy he wishes his own father could be. INTERVIEW The film's lead actor, child star Roni Akurati sat down to give an

interview about his new film 'Growing Up Smith'. Q: How did you get involved in acting? A: My mom suggested I go to an acting class but prior to that, I was watching Indian dancing in films and learned how to do it. I then started Indian dancing at cultural events in the Chicago area. I started acting classes at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in Arlington Heights. Q: How did you land the role of Smith in this film? A: I was actually in India at the time Smith was being cast, so I had to do Skype calls with the producers and the director. After several times of auditioning through Skype, I went to L.A. for a screen test with Brighton Sharbino who plays Amy. That was the last audition before I found out I got the role. Q: What kind of acting projects would you like to tackle in the future? A: Any acting project would be fine by me. But I really like comedies and I would like to do more of those. Showtimes, tickets, trailer, and Q&A information can be found on the film's official web site – GrowingUpSmithMovie.com.

India must back openers, not look for new ones says Kohli eight, five and 11, while partner Shikhar Dhawan managed one and 11 before making way for Rahane, who was out for one in Sunday's third ODI in Kolkata. India have no more 50-over matches scheduled before they defend their Champions Trophy title in England in June but Kohli is confident the problems will be sorted out by then. "Whatever areas or concerns we have, we'll address them," Kohli

told reporters. "First we didn't have an opening problem, it was an issue with the middle order. Now the middle order has been sorted. "We have very good openers with us. It's not a case where we have to find openers. You have to give chances for people to come back into form. "I think if we back our openers and give them confidence, it's all about one or two innings in

international cricket. Once you get the flow, everything clicks." Injuries have compounded India's opening issues as the team have been unable to give an extended run to a batting pair. Sharma has not played any cricket since hurting his thigh in the final ODI against New Zealand at the end of October while Rahul and Dhawan missed the series against the Black Caps with injuries.

Yuvraj, Dhoni tons power India to 381-6 against England Cricket - India v England - Third One Day International - Eden Gardens, Kolkata 01/22/2017. India's players pose with the trophy after winning the series.

KOLKATA - India's opening batsmen have come under fire for poor starts in their last two home series against New Zealand and England but captain Virat Kohli says now is the time to give them support not show them the door. The hosts defeated New Zealand 3-2 and won the threematch ODI series against England 2-1 but there was not a single 50-

run partnership at the top of innings. While 49 was the highest opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane in the five ODIs against New Zealand, India's first-wicket stands against England were 13, 14 and 13. Lokesh Rahul played all three games against England, scoring

CUTTACK - Limited overs stalwarts Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni rolled back the years to smash scintillating centuries and power India to a commanding 381 for six in the second one-day international against England last Thursday. Put into bat, the hosts were reeling at 25 for three at Cuttack's Barabati Stadium when the duo, with the experience of 580 one-dayers between them, staged a spectacular recovery with an epic 256-run

partnership spread over 38-odd overs. The early dismissals of the openers or the rare failure by home captain Virat Kohli mattered little as Yuvraj and Dhoni first steadied the ship before exhibiting the kind of shot-making which comes naturally to them. Left-handed Yuvraj, one of the cleanest strikers of the ball, hammered a career-best 150 off 127 balls, a sizzling knock studded with 21 boundaries and

three sixes. Dhoni, who relinquished limited-overs captaincy earlier this month, made 134 off 122 balls, his 10th one-day century. His innings contained six sixes, including three in a Liam Plunkett over. P a c e m a n C h r i s Wo a k e s emerged from the batting carnage with his reputation intact, having claimed four of the six Indian wickets while Plunkett got the other two, having bled 91 runs in his 10 overs.

Active kids less likely to be depressed later on By Lisa Rapaport Children who get more exercise may have fewer symptoms of depression than their peers who are less active, a recent study suggests. Researchers used activity trackers to see how much physical activity children got, then interviewed kids and their parents to assess whether kids had symptoms of depression. When kids got more moderate to vigorous physical activity at ages 6 and 8, they were less likely to have symptoms of major depressive disorder two years later, the study found.

“Our results indicate that increasing physical activity in children may prevent depression,” said study leader Dr. Tonje Zahl, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. While plenty of research has documented the potential for exercise to boost mood and help with depression for adults, less is known about the ways activity may influence mental health in young children. Often, depression and other mental health disorders don’t emerge until adolescence or early adulthood. The study included a sample of children from Trondheim.

Researchers surveyed parents to assess children’s mental health at age 6, then did follow-up interviews with parents and kids at age 8 and 10 to determine whether they had symptoms of depression. Altogether, they had data on 795 kids at age 6, 699 at age 8 and 702 at age 10. At ages 6 and 8, children were asked to wear accelerometers to track their movements for one week, removing the devices only to bathe. The accelerometers showed that at age 6, kids typically got about 1.19 hours a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity and had 8.58

Review offers limited support for using yoga for back pain relief

A man performs yoga as another man walks past him at Galle Face Green in Colombo, Sri Lanka on July 6, 2016.

By Gene Emery NEW YORK - A new review of past research shows limited evidence that yoga may be better than no exercise when it comes to relieving general back pain but little evidence that yoga is better than other types of back exercise. The analysis of data from a dozen studies, published online by the Cochrane Library, looked at back pain that persisted for at least three months and had an unknown cause. A common problem, such pain is usually treated with self-care and overthe-counter medicines. Doctors often recommend exercise, including the stretching found in yoga. The research team, led by Susan Wieland of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, found moderately good evidence that yoga is effective, compared to no exercise, when done for six months. Evidence for a benefit when yoga was done for shorter or longer periods was less convincing.

“It seems yoga is better than not doing exercise and it seems to be effective in making small improvements in pain and smallto-moderate improvements in function," Wieland told Reuters Health by phone. "The jury is still out when it comes to comparing yoga with other exercise." Five percent of back-pain patients who tried yoga said the technique actually made their symptoms worse. Whether other types of exercise designed to help sore backs are just as likely to aggravate the condition is not known. "The risks were all mild or transient exacerbations, and that's what you see with exercise generally," Wieland said. "No exercise is completely safe." There was no good evidence that adding yoga to other exercises for 10 weeks helped either, the researchers concluded. Even when people reported back pain relief from yoga, it didn't seem to be clinically important. The Wieland team predicted that a 15-point improvement on a 100-point scale would be enough to make a difference in people's lives. "We

found it was more like 5 points," Wieland said. Altogether, the researchers looked at data on 1,080 participants enrolled in seven trials in the U.S., three trials in India, and two in the UK. In each trial, the yoga lessons were specifically designed to help back problems and were conducted by experienced and qualified instructors. Most used Iyengar, Hatha, or Viniyoga forms of yoga, the researchers said. One problem with the trials: the people involved knew that treatment they were getting, which can bias the results. One study was financed by a yoga institution; three did not report a funding sources. The analysis looked at evidence published through March 2016. The Cochrane Collaboration, an international not-for-profit organization that evaluates and reviews medical research, periodically updates its findings as new results come in. Wieland said five additional studies that have been completed or are underway should be incorporated into a new review in about a year. For now, "the lesson for consumers is, if you have chronic low back pain and you're interested in trying yoga, and your doctor agrees, it's worth a try," she said. "But be sure you're attending a yoga class where the yoga is designed to be helpful and safe for people with back issues. And make sure your teacher is well trained. It will minimize your chances of injury and maximize your chances of seeing a benefit."

Children who get more exercise may have fewer symptoms of depression than their peers who are less active, a recent study suggests.

hours of sedentary time. At age 8, active time was 1.18 hours a day on average with 9.22 hours of sedentary time. By age 10, active time dipped to 1.09 hours on a typical day with 9.94 hours of sedentary time. Researchers assessed kids for nine different symptoms of depression and found on average, kids had 0.52 symptoms at ages 6 and 10, with 0.46 at age 8. Higher levels of moderate-tovigorous physical activity at 6 and 8 predicted fewer symptoms of major depressive disorder two years later, with every extra hour of such activity linked with a moderate decrease in symptoms. The study didn’t find an association between inactivity and symptoms of depression, however. One limitation of the study is that symptoms of depression don’t necessarily mean children would have a clinical diagnosis of depression, the authors note in Pediatrics. In fact, only a few children had diagnoses of major depressive order: 0.3 percent of participants at age six, and 0.4 percent by age eight. The study is also observational, and can’t show how any amount of exercise might cause kids to become depressed.

Even so, there are many possible biological explanations for why exercise might make depression less likely in kids, said Dr. Gary Goldfield, a psychology researcher at the University of Ottawa in Canada who wasn’t involved in the study. For one thing, exercise releases several chemicals in the brain that can improve mood or reduce feelings of depression including endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, Goldfield said. Physical activity can also lead to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. “Physical activity can also reduce depression through many psychosocial processes such as reduced stress, increased social interaction, improved cognition, learning and academic performance as well as increased selfesteem, body image and quality of life which can positively impact mood,” Goldfield added by email. The study results suggest that children, like adults, can get lasting benefits from regular exercise, said Dr. Larry Rosen, professor emeritus of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills. “The message seems clear,” Rosen, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “Exercise now keeps you feeling better later.”

Americans won't lose coverage in health law reform: Trump aide WASHINGTON - The Trump administration will not allow 20 million people who rely on the Affordable Care Act for their health insurance to go without coverage when the law, known as Obamacare, is repealed and replaced with a new plan, a senior White House official said. “For the 20 million who rely upon the Affordable Care Act in

some form, they will not be without coverage during this transition time," White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told CBS program "Face the Nation," adding in an interview with ABC's "This Week" that the administration "may" stop enforcing the 2010 law's requirement that individuals purchase insurance.

Secondhand smoke during childhood may boost miscarriage risk By Shereen Lehman ATLANTA - Nonsmoking women who were exposed to secondhand smoke as children may have an increased risk of a miscarriage, a Chinese study suggests. Although they had never been smokers themselves, women in the study who lived with two or more smokers as a child had a 20 percent higher risk of miscarriage, and those who were exposed to smoke five or more times per week had a 14 percent greater risk of losing a pregnancy, compared to women not exposed to secondhand smoke in childhood. Nonsmokers who grew up with one smoker in the house, or were around smoke less than five times per week, didn’t appear to have

any change in their miscarriage risk. “Our findings support the enactment of stringent national smoke-free laws and strict enforcement in China, and promotion of smoke-free homes to protect children, as well as the need for campaigns to change social norms of smoking and passive smoking,” the authors wrote in Tobacco Control. Shanshan Yang, a researcher at the Institute of Geriatrics at the Chinese PLA General Hospital in Beijing, and colleagues analyzed survey data for almost 20,000 women age 50 and older who live in Guangzhou, China. About 57 percent of the women had been exposed to secondhand smoke during childhood, that is, before age 18. The study had some limitations

because the participants had to rely on memories of childhood, and the researchers were not able to assess how old the women were when they had their miscarriages or if they were exposed to secondhand smoke during their pregnancies. Lucy Popova, a researcher with the Georgia State University School of Public Health in Atlanta, said there are considerable differences in smoking habits between the U.S. and China. “In the U.S., smoking rates between men and women are pretty close; in China, very few women smoke while a majority of men smoke. There are also other factors (indoor smoking policies and rules, social norms) that might affect the rates of exposure to secondhand smoke in

Seniors with memory problems may struggle with driving By Madeline Kennedy TORONTO – Seniors with memory problems and related attention and decision-making issues may struggle with driving tasks, according to a Canadian study. Not all patients with mild cognitive impairment, the early stage of memory loss, have issues with driving, the researchers write in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. However, patients with added impairments, such as difficulty with multi-tasking or making quick decisions, are particularly likely to have trouble with tasks like staying in lanes and making left turns in traffic, the researchers write. “Driving is a highly complex task that requires the integration of multiple cognitive functions, such as attention, memory, and visuospatial ability, all of which can be affected by mild cognitive impairment,” said senior author Tom Schweizer, director of the neuroscience research program at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. “Despite this, there are no validated tools or guidelines to help assess the driving safety of patients with mild cognitive impairment,” Schweizer told Reuters Health by email. To study how mild cognitive impairment affects driving ability, Schweizer and colleagues

recruited 24 patients with memory loss. They divided participants into two groups: one group with only memory problems, and another group with other cognitive problems too, such as issues with attention, reasoning/planning, or visual perception. Twenty cognitively healthy participants in the same age range acted as a comparison group. The participants underwent cognitive testing as well as a driving simulation that tested their ability to perform a range of tasks such as driving straight, making turns, and making left turns with oncoming traffic. Overall, patients with mild cognitive impairment committed more than twice as many driving errors as the cognitively healthy drivers. Memory impaired patients were more likely to cross the center line of the road and stray out of the legal driving lane than healthy drivers. They were also more likely to make mistakes turning left with oncoming traffic, but they had no issues with turning right, or turning left with no traffic. When researchers analyzed data on the two groups separately, however, they found that seniors with only memory issues were not more likely than healthy drivers to make errors. Patients with multiple cognitive

impairments, however, were at much greater risk of errors, including crossing the center line, missing stop signs, and straying out of the driving lane. These individuals were also much more likely to make errors during left turns. A diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment alone “does not mean that someone should stop driving, but it is important to monitor for declines,” said Jennifer Davis, a clinical neuropsychologist at Rhode Island Hospital who studies cognitive issues and driving. Mild impairment is often a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease and is likely to get worse over time, “so it is also important to help patients and families identify when it might be time to stop driving,” Davis, who was not involved in the study, noted by email. “Families are encouraged to monitor driving by riding with their family member as a passenger,” Davis advised, adding, “If concerns arise, be sure to see your doctor and consider taking a formal road test.” “These results highlight the importance of physicians talking to their patients about driving, even when cognitive deficits are very mild in nature,” said Schweizer. New tools are needed to help doctors better assess driving, he added.

childhood,” she said. However, Popover said the potential biological mechanisms linking secondhand smoke exposure and pregnancy loss would be the same no matter where the mother lives. “So while a study might find different numbers of women with heavy childhood exposure to secondhand smoke, the relationship between exposure and pregnancy loss most likely will still be there,” she said. She pointed out that three other studies, conducted in the U.S. and

cited in the new report, have also shown that childhood secondhand smoke exposure is linked with pregnancy loss. Popova added that according to the U.S. Surgeon General, there are no safe levels of exposure to secondhand smoke, even brief exposure causes immediate harm, and the only way to protect nonsmokers from the dangerous chemicals in secondhand smoke is to eliminate smoking indoors. The authors of the report didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Sunscreen better than umbrella at the beach By Andrew M. Seaman NEW YORK - Sitting under an umbrella at the beach is no substitute for using sunscreen, a new study shows. About 78 percent of people who used only an umbrella to protect themselves from the sun during a few hours at the beach were sunburned the next day, compared to only 25 percent of people who used sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 100, researchers found. But while sunscreen prevented more sunburns than a large umbrella, neither method was 100 percent effective. “It’s good to have a holistic approach," said lead author Dr. Hao Ou-Yang. "You need to think of a combination of measures." Ou-Yang and a coauthor both work for Johnson and Johnson Consumer Inc. in Skillman, New Jersey. The company partly funded the study and is the parent company of Neutrogena Corp, which manufactures the sunscreen used in the research. Ou-Yang told Reuters Health that people should use a combination of approaches like using a high-SPF sunscreen, wearing clothes and a hat and seeking

shade. For the new study, the researchers recruited 81 fair-skinned people to sit in the midday sun at Lake Lewisville, Texas, for 3.5 hours in August 2014. The participants were randomly assigned to use SPF 100 sunscreen or to use a standardsize beach umbrella. The participants were checked the next day for sunburns. The researchers found 142 sunburned areas on the 41 people who used an umbrella, but only 17 on those who used sunscreen. Overall, 32 of those who used u mb r ellas en d ed u p w ith sunburns, compared to 10 in the sunscreen group. The researchers explain in JAMA Dermatology that beach umbrellas are designed to block direct rays from the sun but they don't protect against scattered rays. "You don’t want to just trust one method for sun protection," said Dr. Jennifer Stein, a dermatologist at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. "The safest way to be outside is avoid the middle of the day, sit in the shade, wear protective clothing and sunscreen."

HEALTH & SCIENCE

Heartburn pills may cause serious bacterial infections By Lisa Rapaport SCOTLAND - People who take popular heartburn pills known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be more likely to develop intestinal infections than people who don’t take these medications, a Scottish study suggests. The pills work by stopping cells in the stomach lining from producing too much of the acid that can cause ulcers and reflux symptoms such as heartburn. Researchers examined data on about 188,000 people who used these drugs and about 377,000 similar individuals who didn’t take PPIs. Compared to people who didn’t use the drugs, those who did were at higher risk for a severe form of diarrhea caused by the Clostridium difficile bacteria. Their odds of this infection were 1.4 times higher when they were hospitalized and 1.7 times higher when they weren’t in the hospital. In addition, PPI users had a 4.5 times greater risk of getting Campylobacter infections, a common form of food poisoning,

if they were hospitalized and a 3.7 times higher risk when they weren’t hospitalized. “Reducing stomach acid, which acts as a barrier to infection, increases the chance of getting a GI infection,” said senior study author Dr. Thomas MacDonald, a pharmacology researcher at the University of Dundee in Scotland. “The main risk of PPIs are gastrointestinal infections,” MacDonald added by email. MacDonald and colleagues analyzed data on stool samples collected from patients in Scotland between 1999 and 2013. Overall, there were 22,705 positive test results for bacterial infections. This included 15,273 people with C. difficile and 6,590 cases of Campylobacter, the authors reported in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Researchers also tested for Salmonella, Shigella and Escherichia coli, or E. coli, but didn’t find an association between PPIs and these infections.

One limitation of the study is that it only included data on people who took PPIs with a prescription, even though these drugs have been available in Scotland since 2004 without a prescription, the authors note. Researchers also lacked data on other factors that can influence the risk of bacterial infections such as obesity, smoking and alcohol use. Previous research on PPIs and infections has produced mixed results, with some studies suggesting an association and others failing to establish a connection, noted Dr. Wojciech Marlicz, a gastroenterology researcher at Pomeranian Medical University in Poland who wasn’t involved in the study. Millions of people worldwide take PPIs, which are available without a prescription in Europe and the U.S., which means even a slight increase in the odds of bacterial infections can still impact a lot of patients. “The main problem with PPI use is their general overuse,” Marlicz said by email. “These

drugs are very potent and safe when used according to indication.” “Some patients will gain clear benefits from PPIs as they have stomach problems, such as ulcers which will heal better with less acid,” said Dr. Claire Steves, a researcher at King's College London who wasn’t involved in

the study. “However other patients may take these as preventatives, or for mild symptoms,” Steves added by email. “This study would prompt us to reassess the risk and benefit for each individual, and in some cases alternatives – such as changing diet or lifestyle – may be better options.”
