Almost finished - Presley’s cross-country cycling tour The four have followed the Western Express route which has taken them through California, Nevada, Utah, and half of Colorado to Pueblo, Colorado, where they joined the Trans America Trail route and have traveled through the eastern half of Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky. By Saturday, August 1, they were in Damascus, Virginia, and took a full day of rest before starting out on the final leg of the tour to Yorktown, Virginia, the official end of the Trans America Trail Route. However, the four have decided they wanted to end their tour on the shores of the Atlantic, and will continue on for another 20 to 25 miles to Virginia Beach, Virginia. “We’re almost done, Mrs. Linda,” exclaimed Presley, over the phone last Wednesday. “It’s been challenging, and a rewarding experience, but, I’m ready to see the Atlantic.” When asked how this jour-

By Linda Cranford Josh “Snowy” Presley is only days from completing his cross-country cycling journey to raise funds for the Semper Fi Fund. By this Sunday, August 9, he and his traveling companions should be wading in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean on the sandy beaches of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Presley first began his journey in April at Astoria, Oregon with the plans to follow cycling routes that would take him almost 5,000 miles from Oregon to Maine. After one month on the trail and a little over 1,000 miles, unforeseen circumstances had Presley change his route and plans, and basically start over. On June 9, after hooking up with three former AT Thru-Hikers that he met while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2011, Presley started out again, this time from San Francisco, California.

I’m watching the hundreds of cars wisk by, the rumble strips on the side of the road, the guard rails, and any rocks or other objects in the road.” He said on the AT, although challenging, he was more relaxed. “By the end of the day, I’m exhausted both mentally and physically.” Presley is cycling with his AT friends, Seth, “Bear Bag,” who married Lindsey, “Hover,” after meeting her on the AT in 2011, and Seth’s dad, George. By the end of their tour, they will have cycled approximately 3800 miles, and crossed nine states. However, Presley, all together, will have cycled over 4800 miles by the time he reaches Virginia Beach, when you add his first 1,000 plus miles. Presley said that Kansas was the most challenging state. “I would welcome having to ride in pouring down ran as opposed to the wind. All across Kansas there was a constant head wind,” explained Presley. He said the terrain was flat, and he was constantly peddling with no breaks. “There was no shade, and no scenery, just a monotonous scenery of nothing but corn and soy bean fields, and rough roads.” “Mrs. Linda, I have met some amazing people along the way,” exclaimed Presley, “and, a number of invaluable Trail Angels.” Trail Angels are people who go out of their way to help cyclists, and hikers, by providing food, snacks, and/or drinks, or a place to stay for the night. Throughout the tour, the four have been fortunate to meet several of these people. “One day, in Utah, a couple of motorcyclists from Czechoslovakia passed us, turned around, and came back to check on us,” said Presley. “About 30 minutes after they left, they came back again, and brought all four of us a bottle of Gatorade. These guys rode 10 to 15 miles to the next town, and then 10 to 15 miles back, just to give us the Gatorade, and they paid for it, too. We’ve had dozens of experiences like this, where people have gone out of their way to befriend us, and/or help us. It’s renewed my faith in the goodness of people. People in general are not as bad as the main stream media portrays them to be. All you ever hear in the news is the negative aspects of people, you never hear about all the good that a majority of people do.” While at a trail hostel (an established dormitory-style place, which provides accommodations for travelers - usually backpackers and cyclists), in Newton, Kansas, Presley met Claudia, a cross-country cyclists from Italy, who was following the same routes, and she joined Presley and his companions. “Claudia is an avid cyclist,” said Presley. “She has a lot of followers in Italy, is sponsored by several prominent Italian companies, and has made lots of tours in Italy and France. She rides at the same pace as I do, and I’ve enjoyed learning about her culture. However, she speaks very little English, so every day we’ve been teaching each other different words.” Presley and the group were in Kentucky when I spoke to him, and are

enjoying the beautiful scenery of the blue grass of Kentucky, and its rolling hills of green. He said that Claudia separated from the group a day or so before we spoke to detour to the Mammoth Cave National Park in south central Kentucky, and should catch back up with them in Damascus, Virginia to finish the tour with them. Also meeting Presley in Damascus are his mother, Debbie, and his stepfather, Bill McMullan, who will take turns driving and riding with him the last 100 miles or so to Virginia Beach. Presley assured me that there are many other stories that can be told, and another article may be forthcoming once he returns to Laurel. “This has been a rewarding experience, and I will continue to raise funds for the Semper Fi Fund once I return to Mississippi,” said Presley. Our conversation ended with a discussion in sharing life experiences with others, and one of Presley’s favorite quotes is from Christopher McCandles, who wrote “Into the Wind” – “Happiness is only real when shared.” “It’s one thing to do something on your own, but it’s so much more enriching and invaluable to share it with others,” added Presley.

Parker Named South MS Ag Teacher of Year South Jones Vocational-Agriculture Instructor/FFA Advisor Kenneth R. Parker was recently named the 2015 South Mississippi Agriculture Education Teacher of the Year. Sponsored by ICEV Multimedia, the award is presented during the annual Mississippi Association of Vocational Agriculture Teachers Conference. A graduate of Mississippi State University, Parker taught Agriculture Education and served as FFA Advisor at Northeast Jones High School for a several years before transferring to South Jones High School.

Submitted Tommy Parker, Superintendent of the Jones County School District was recently honored by the American Cancer Society Mid South Division Board of Directors at their annual Mid South Division Board Meeting in New Orleans, LA. The Jones County School District is the #1 Fundraising School District in the State of Mississippi and also has
led the Division in its innovative fundraising efforts for the Relay For Life of Jones County event, which is the second largest event in the state. Mr. Parker was given the “Outstanding Volunteer Award” given only to select volunteers from around the Division who show leadership, dedication and passion for the American Cancer Society.
