In fact, the Sleuth knows one R8 owner who has to replace two such shock absorbers on a car with just 23,000 miles on it. Would a set of conventional shocks be as good? Perhaps not quite, but they would likely cost less to replace and possibly last longer. Magnetic ride control, which uses varying amounts of electricity to control the viscosity of the “liquid metal” inside the shock absorbers, is actually not that uncommon and raises a question about such technology’s cost/performance quotient. HISTORY Variations The ZDX was easily the most audacious automobile that Honda’s upscale division had devised Dash layout since the NSX sports car was unveiled more than 20 years ago. The ZDX began with a platform developed from Acura’s highly Rear vantage successful MDX tall wagon. From there, the California design team shifted into overdrive in developing the radical shape. The roof itself is actually a continuous glass surface extending from the windshield to the farthest edge of the hatch opening. The ZDX’s 3.7-liter V6 diZDX cargo rected its 300 horsepower to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. After four years, the ZDX was retired. By MALCOLM GUNN

THE GOOD STUFF The ZDX was built to attract singles and empty-nest types who valued style over function. For normal driving, the allwheel-drive’s torque was split on a 30:70 front:rear, but it would automatically adjust up to 90:10 if the rear-wheels lost traction. In a turn, up to 100 percent of the rear torque could be shifted to the outside rear wheel to maximize cornering bite. The ZDX’s storage area could be extended when the passenger seat and split-folding rear seat were folded flat. HEADS UP! The front doors were coupe-like long, which was intentional since they masked two smaller rear-seat openings with door handles that were cleverly camouflaged beside the rear-most roof pillar. The only problem was that access to the back seat was close to impossible for adults, who had to dive in headfirst to gain entry. Fortunately, a rearview camera was standard for the ZDX, which provided considerable assistance when backing up since the view out the rear window area and the liftgate class was severely limited. Unfortunately, the blind-spot warning system that informed drivers of cars approaching from the left- or right-hand lanes was optional. Overall, the ZDX was a tough sell when compared to the more practical MDX since they were similarly priced. OVERALL A truly sporty sport ute has its drawbacks and compromises and the ZDX was no exception. On the other hand, the comfortable driving position was up to snuff, the 300-horsepower V6 was an eager performer and the ride was solid and comfortable. In short, the ZDX provided nearly everything you would expect to find in a personal — some might say unusual — luxury car. All models are allwheel-drive and can overdrive the outside rear wheel when cornering. That helps the X4’s stability by reducing understeer, which is a vehicle’s natural tendency to continue in straight line while cornering.

Four-door, all-wheel-drive hatchback sedan. 2.0-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (240); 3.0-liter DOHC I6 turbocharged (300). Eight-speed automatic. BMW pioneered the part-sport ute, part hatchback X6 model and is adding to the niche with the similar X4 and upcoming X2. Mercedes-Benz is planning a similar models and other automakers will likely follow suit.

Copycat styling might actually cut into sales of larger X6. Base four-

cylinder turbo engine is pretty gutsy, six-cylinder even more so.

Practical, multi-configurable seating/cargo arrangement. Limited rear visibility a drawback for some drivers. Adding options won’t come

cheap, but sticking to the basics keeps it affordable.
