ABOUT

SUPERIOR ALUMINUM Founded in 1956 in Youngstown, Ohio, Superior Aluminum began as a window manufacturer before making the switch to aluminum railing in 1960. In 1966, the company was purchased by businessmen Tom Francis and Ed Borchers. Tom and Ed moved the company to its current home in Russia, Ohio, where continued growth forced two facility moves before eventually building their current modern 110,000 square foot facility in 1996, which remains the company’s home. Today, Superior continues to be a privatelyowned business, operated by the Francis and Borchers families. A sister company owned by the Francis family manufactures all aluminum castings, which ensures tight quality control, ultra-fast response, and easy customization when needed. The core values of honesty, hard work, and treating people with respect established by our founders remain as the foundation of the business today.

CAPS & BASES

Round and Square

Fiberglass Columns Elegance, Strength, and Dependability Superior fiberglass columns are shaped as they were in Ancient Greece, stretching upward from a strong base to a graceful taper at the smooth top. Whether round, fluted, or square, our fiberglass columns are specially constructed for all types of decorative and load-bearing installations, and have architecturally correct proportions and projections. The Greeks used the word “entasis” to describe their columns… you will call them “beautiful.” They are perfect for indoor and outdoor applications and ideal for both residential and commercial use. Whether it’s for new construction or remodeling, beautiful Superior fiberglass columns are the low-cost way to add a touch of elegance and detail to your architectural designs that will last a lifetime. Our fiberglass columns are manufactured from high density, highly advanced fiberglass polymers that resist impact damage, and are virtually maintenance-free

Durability - Unlike wood, fiberglass columns will not rot, split, or warp, and are more impact resistant than wood. And, of course, termites hate them.

Strength - Fiberglass columns can be used as load bearing structural elements in entrances, covered walkways, lobbies, colonnades, balconies, and other structures, inside or outside.

Standard

Scamozzi

Easy Installation - Cut the columns to size and slip on the caps and bases. Easy to follow assembly and installation instructions are located on the back cover and packaged with each column.

Standard

Superior Aluminum offers a wide range of sizes and lengths to fit almost any application. Refer to the Dimensions and Load Data charts for available sizes.

Finish - For outdoor installations, the

columns must be protected. A good quality alkyd or oil based primer and paint are recommended. Paint should be applied with a brush. Spray painting is not recommended. No special preparation is required, and once painted, the columns will not deteriorate, even under severe long-term weathering.

Easy Assembly and Installation!

7000 Series 7000 Picket Fence features machined post openings, eliminating the need for brackets. The result is a clean, rigid design with added strength.

Screw Cover

Series 7000 Picket Fence is not only easy to assemble and install, but the machined post openings and factory assembled sections facilitate quick turn-around and cost savings. Rail Wedge View of the underside of bottom rail to show rail wedge location.

Rail Wedge Tightening rail wedge on shortened section.

Screws Rail wedge screws to secure corner and end posts.

2

All posts are machined with openings to receive top and bottom rails. If the fence is angled vertically or horizontally, specify the angle so the proper openings can be machined into the post. As assembled fence is inserted into the openings, rail wedges located in the top and bottom rails will ensure proper insertion of 11/4” inside the post. If a fence section or sections need to be shortened, simply saw an equal amount from each rail end with the use of a miter or circular saw. Reinstall and tighten the rail wedge using an 1/8” Allen Wrench on both the top and bottom rails so 11/4” protrudes through the post openings. For securing a corner or end post, a screw is provided for each rail wedge to prevent the post from moving outward.

Railing Splices

Mounting Options

Railing splices are designed for a tight press fit and must be compressed with a pliers to permit them to slip into the pipe. The areas to be joined should be cleaned thoroughly. Mix adhesive according to manufacturer’s directions. Mix only enough that you can use within 1/2 hour. Apply adhesive to inside surface of pipe. Compress splice sleeve with a pliers, then slip into the pipe. Wipe off excess adhesive after components are properly joined. The areas connected together should be left undisturbed for eight hours, longer in cold weather.

Pipe or picket railing can be embedded in concrete and grouted, or mounted on decks and platforms with base flanges, or side-mounted on facia or stringer by means of facia flanges.

Attachment of tee fitting to post

Tee Fittings & Hardware Options To attach a 502 tee or 504 angle tee to a post, a stainless steel screw (526) is positioned through the fitting and into a stainless steel rivet nut (529) in the tubular post. Note: A stainless steel rivet nut CANNOT be used at any location mounting into a reinforcement rod. When mounting a 502 tee or 504 angle tee into a location with a reinforcement rod, a stainless steel screw (527) must be used. When two tees (502 tee or 504 angle tee) are located directly opposite each other to form a cross at 12º or less, a stainless steel thru bolt (524) and locknut are used. Note: This method can be used in locations with or without reinforcement rods.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT -

540 Side Mount Flange

Base Mounting 541 Heavy-Duty Base

RIGIDITY -

For continuous spans in excess of 40 feet, expansion joints should be provided. To make an expansion joint, one end of the spliced joint should not have structural adhesive applied so that it is free to move in or out of the pipe. If a joint is provided every 30 feet, the width of the gap should allow 1/8” expansion for each 40°F of expected temperature rise. All pipe railing splices should be made no more than 12” from the nearest post.

Post spacing shall not exceed 6’ 0” center-to-center. All posts will be unspliced single pipe length. Lower rails shall be a single unspliced length between posts. All top rails shall be continuous whenever possible. All fasteners shall be tightened so that completed railing is rigid and free of play at joints and component attachments.

MATERIALS -

All pipe cuts shall be square and accurate for minimum joint-gap. Cuts shall be clean and free of chamfer, from deburring, nicks and burrs. Holes shall be drilled the proper size for a tight flush fit of rivets and screws. All posts grouted in concrete must have one 1/4” diameter weep hole, 1/2” above post collar, in the plane of the rail.

All rails and posts shall be formed from 6063-T6 extruded aluminum alloys, except where there are formed elbows, whereby 6063-T4 is used. All pickets are 3/4” round, formed and extruded from 6063-T5 aluminum. All railing accessories shall be cast from industry standard aluminum alloys according to the requirements of the application. All baked-on enamel and anodized finishes adhere to the specifications set forth by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association.

Cable Railing

2000

Modern Styling with a Virtually Unobstructed View! Meets OSHA, ADA and ICC safety criteria. Superior Series 2000 Cable Railing is the perfect complement to any architectural design, indoors or out. It adds a truly modern and contemporary feel to any building and is an excellent choice for settings with a view.

(54”) on center. Cable spans should not exceed this distance to minimize deflection. For step railing, the exact degree of slope is needed prior to fabrication so pre-drilled holes can be elongated to accommodate the angle and ensure that the cable runs in a straight line.

It lends itself well to residential, commercial or public buildings, high-rises, condos, apartments, motels, balconies, parking decks, public walkways, backyard decks or any area where a contemporary look or a virtually unobstructed view is desired.

Superior Cable Railing is available in any height. Standard heights include 42” for commercial and 36” for residential.

The stainless steel cables combined with aluminum post and rail assemblies make for a strong, durable and maintenance-free system that will last for a lifetime of use.

Gates are available upon request.

NEW! Concealed Picket Screws

The cable is 3/16” 1x19 Type 316 stainless steel cable. This type of cable has extremely high tensile strength and is constructed from 19 strands to prevent stretching.

A new product design for Superior Railing features a screw cover to conceal picket Screw screws on top and Cover bottom rail assemblies for a cleaner, more streamlined look.

The posts are 21/2” square and can be surface mounted, side mounted or embedded into concrete. The top rail has a 2” wide gripping surface to meet federal, state and local codes.

When installed, fittings and tensioning devices are hidden inside the post with only the head exposed.

Finishes

Smart, decorative finishes add a distinctive touch. Whether baked-on enamel, anodized or duranodic, these finishes are guaranteed to endure for years of maintenance-free beauty.

Machined Post Openings

Posts used in the cable rail system include double end posts, triple corner posts, single crossover posts and intermediate tension posts. Each post has a vertical row of pre-drilled holes, spaced 3” on center, to accommodate fittings or support the cable.

Posts feature machined openings to accept top and bottom rails. This eliminates the need for brackets, resulting in a clean, rigid design with added strength.

End, corner, crossover and intermediate tension posts can be spaced up to 41/2’

Easy Assembly & Installation Post and rail configurations are delivered pre-assembled with cables pre-threaded, except where shipping limitations prevent it. For any un-assembled sections, simply insert top and bottom rails into machined post openings, locate the positions for the posts and fasten down the hand rail system. Un-assembled cables will Clip-On Stop come cut to length with fittings already swaged on. Each cable end will be fitted Tension Stud with either a clip-on stop or a tension stud. Feed the cable, clip-on stop end first, through the pre-drilled holes in any intermediate posts towards the end post with 1/4” pre-drilled holes. Feed the cable through the end post and slide the washer over the body of the stop, recessed side out. Place the U-shaped clip into the slot in the stop. Pull the cable back through the hole, until the washer stops against the post, with the clip resting in the recess of the washer.

Attach a spring clamp on the cable next to the post to keep the clip-on stop end of the cable tight. This will prevent the washer and U-shaped clip from falling off until the tension end is tightened. Repeat these steps for each cable until all spring clamps are attached. Next, install the tension ends of each cable. Tension Receiver Slide the black washer over the body of the tension receiver, then feed the receiver through the hole in the back of the post with 1/2” pre-drilled holes. Feed the tension stud through the end post to meet the receiver. By hand, screw the receiver onto the tension stud at least 6 full turns. Do not tension the cables completely until all the cables have been installed between the end posts. Repeat these steps until each cable has been hand tightened.

Tensioning the Cable After all cables have been installed, tension each cable to approximately 400 lbs. Follow recommended tensioning sequence diagram, beginning with the cable nearest the center of the post. Lock the cable gripping Recommended pliers on the cable Tensioning approximately 1/4” from Sequence the post to prevent the cable from twisting and insert Allen Wrench into the tension receiver. Next, place the tension gauge on the cable you are tensioning with the cable running between the two nylon spools. Pull the lanyard downward until the nylon slider can be hooked on to the cable. Read the needle position on the scale and refer to the calibration table to determine the tension. The gauge can be left on the cable for “hands free” adjustment. Hold the cable gripping pliers with one hand and turn the Allen Wrench with the other until the correct tension is achieved. Go back and double check the tension of each cable, as tensions may change as each cable is continuously tightened.
