Position Description – October 2016 Position: Program Associate, Coach Across America Service Site: Seattle, Washington Reports to: Program Director Time Requirement: 900 hours of service from November 2016–June 2017 Application Materials Due: Friday, November 4, 2016 (see below for submission instructions) Organizational Overview SOS Outreach, founded and headquartered in Colorado’s Vail Valley, is a national youth development nonprofit utilizing outdoor experiential learning to inspire positive decision making in youth for healthy and successful lives. Working with youth aged 8 to 18, every SOS program incorporates the SOS core values of courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, compassion and humility. SOS mentors help students define and practice these core values as they provide a consistent adult presence for students who may not otherwise have a positive role model in their lives. The program targets underserved youth, intervening in situations that have been shown to lead to high school dropout. SOS offers a multi-year, progressive curriculum beginning with a fiveday introductory program, continuing with the four-year mentor-led curriculum and culminating when students return to SOS in a junior mentor capacity. Throughout the curriculum, SOS students focus on outdoor experiential learning, character development, service learning, values-based leadership training and community engagement. Up2Us Sports is a coalition of more than 1,200 nonprofit organizations that believe in the power of sports to fight childhood obesity, end academic failure, and reduce gang participation. Up2Us Sports’ flagship program is Coach Across America (CAA), a national coach/mentor program that places, trains, and supports coaches to provide meaningful experiences to youth in a variety of sports programs nationwide. More than 1,800 Coaches have provided opportunities for more than 284,000 youth to be active, learn skills, and stay out of trouble through sports. Program Associate Overview The CAA Program Associate position is a seasonal service position, spanning 900 hours between November 2016 and June 2017 (averaging 30 hours/week between December and March, with a lighter schedule in the shoulder months). Based in Seattle, WA, the Program Associate will focus primarily on our winter Learn to Ride and SnowCore programs at Summit at Snoqualmie and across distance mountain program sites in the Pacific Northwest. These programs emphasize on-mountain learning for youth, focused on leadership and youth development through the activities of snowboarding and skiing. This includes new youth agency recruitment, volunteer management, relationship building, and direct program oversight. The position will also assist with the planning and growth of the 4-year University program including planning and implementing service days and life-skills workshops. SOS Outreach Position Responsibilities

Coordinate ride days – meeting groups at the mountains and working with gear rental shops and ski schools to ensure quality programs are implemented Lead the SOS Outreach core values curriculum with student groups and work with resort staff and volunteers to ensure program continuity across days/mountains

     

Plan and facilitate University program events, including orientation, mentor meetings, service learning projects, life skills workshops, and winter graduation; assist with recruitment of workshop facilitators and service project partners Support the management of relationships, communication, and logistics with mountain resorts, youth agencies/schools, and volunteers Assist managing and training volunteer instructors to implement quality youth programs Assist staff members in recruiting new youth program partners to participate in programs Support registration, data collection, and program evaluation as directed by SOS program staff Support event planning and execution for fundraising and community outreach events

Up2Us Sports Requirements CAA Coaches must complete their assigned term of service listed above not to exceed a 12 month period. During the term of service, the Coach will serve in a direct service role.

Additionally, the CAA Coach will:   

Encourage participants to gain and develop life skills, knowledge, and techniques through sport, using lessons learned at Up2Us Sports’ best in class training events Perform data collection activities as directed by your CAA Program Manager Act as a role model, gaining the respect and trust of the community and youth served

      

Completion of the required hours of service and training by last day of coach contract Attendance at the CAA orientation Completion of twice monthly America Learns reflection logs at an 80% level or higher Completion of timesheets Attendance at a day of service Attend/participate in CAA trainings, meetings, and special initiatives Attend Coach Training Institute (February 23–28, 2017 in Chicago, IL)

CAA Coaches must complete the following requirements to ensure successful completion of the program:

Uniform Policy:

Coaches must wear CAA branded t-shirts provided by Up2Us Sports with CAA logo when coaching and at program sessions and events. Qualifications and Requirements

Minimum Qualifications    

CAA is open to US citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents and those legally allowed to work in the US Members must be 18 years old Members must have, or be working toward, a High School diploma, GED or its equivalent

A Bachelor’s degree is preferred; however, some college combined with experience may substitute for a degree

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have experience and a passion for working with underserved youth through service learning and outdoor education or in other youth development programs. Candidates should have a foundation in the following:  Knowledge of sports-based youth development, public education, and youth engagement  Experience in youth service learning, youth engagement programs, or outdoor adventure sports  Experience, comfort, and passion in working with underserved youth and youth from a diverse array of backgrounds  Snowboarding/skiing proficiency and knowledge of mountain safety  Excellent written and verbal communication skills  Comfort with public speaking and group leadership  Able to manage details and groups; experience coordinating logistics  Valid Driver’s License required. The candidate must have access to reliable transportation and be comfortable driving in snowy conditions and mountainous terrain

*The typical work week for this position will be a variable with regular work in the evenings (2 to 4 nights a week during the months of January, February, and March) to allow for participation in on-mountain activities during ski and snowboard ride days. Additionally, this position will require occasional weekend work including travel to other mountain resort program sites in Washington and Oregon. The Program Associate will receive a season pass to the Summit at Snoqualmie for the 2016–2017 winter ski season. Physical Aspects of the Job This position requires the ability to travel within the service area, use the computer, telephone, and electronic mail systems, lift 50 pounds, lead meetings, and speak in public. This service position may be required to perform other functions not specifically addressed in this description. Compensation This is a part-time, seasonal Coach Across America service position. CAA service members receive $13.00/hour for 900 hours of service, as well as a $500 education award and loan forbearance or deferment for qualified student loans upon successful completion of service. Additionally, the Program Associate will receive a season pass to the Summit at Snoqualmie for the 2016–2017 winter ski season.
