foreword Welcome to the Freedom Festival!... This year’s programme, kindly supported by Hull City Council, the Arts Council and other invaluable sponsors, promises to be more diverse, spectacular and richer than ever before. Put together by Walk the Plank, our prestigious Festival Directors, it goes back to the roots of Freedom and succeeds in striking a fabulous balance between international, national and local acts (the true beating heart of the festival) – with the majority of events free to attend. For the people of Hull, it is your festival. For visitors to our quirky and wonderful city, it is your chance to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Freedom, bottle some of it, take it away, tell others – and come back next year.

Graham Chesters, Chair, Freedom Festival Ltd Hull the birthplace of a freedom pioneer, standing proud as a shortlisted City of Culture; and this year, we trust you’ll find that the city’s best-known festival has much to offer. As new Directors, we encourage you to step beyond the confines of what you know - to experience a world where babies go disco dancing and the streets come alive with thousands of people joined together in celebration of freedom. Freedom. It’s a colossal concept that affects us all. Too many people continue to suffer in pursuit of freedom and equality of opportunity. A famous artist once said that creativity takes courage. So we encourage you to be brave, be curious, and delve into a weekend of creativity, which we’re proud to present. Welcome to Freedom.

Liz Pugh, Producer, Walk the Plank - Freedom Festival Directors

4

Hull City Council is proud to play a key role in the Freedom Festival. Freedom has always been at the heart of Hull’s cultural offering, and now as a City of Culture Candidate City, the weekend is set to encapsulate all that our vibrant city has to offer in a rich, hugely varied programme.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder, Hull City Council

History of Freedom Festival Freedom Festival celebrates, through artistic and cultural expression, Hull’s independent spirit and historic contribution to the cause of freedom. Born in 2007 out of the William Wilberforce commemorations, Freedom Festival is an annual highlight of the city’s artistic and cultural programme. It is beginning to establish a reputation nationally as a leading family-centric arts festival. We believe that ‘Freedom’ must be more than just its name. The concept of ‘freedom’ should be articulated throughout the festival content and supporting activities, by a commitment to exploring local, national and international representations of freedom, independence of spirit and creative expression. Hosting a wealth of local, regional, national and international talent, the festival is a wonderfully eclectic mix of dance, music, theatre, circus, art, poetry and performance. It defines Hull’s aspirations, crossing demographic and socio-economic boundaries, making the arts accessible to all. DISCLAIMER: Freedom Festival is programmed, managed and produced by Walk The Plank on behalf of Freedom Festival Ltd. Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the information detailed in this programme, the organisers cannot accept responsibility for any errors and omissions nor for any consequences arising from the use of this leaflet. All information correct at time of going to print. All events subject to license.

FAMILY FUN AT FREEDOM 2013 Queens Gardens will transform before your very eyes. No longer will you hear the moans and groans of bored children. And they will definitely be no tears before bedtime. Instead, this trip to town will be stress-free after entering the transformed space of never-ending fun, engagement and good old silliness. The biggest surprise will not be the amazing pavement drawings or the costumed walkabouts, it will be the amount of fun you, as a parent, will have whilst you watch your little one enjoy, participate and embrace new activities. Come, join the fun! 15

SUNDAY 8 SEPTEMBER JOHN SIDDIQUE As a port city since 1205, Hull has a rich and varied maritime history. As custodians of that heritage, we want to celebrate and share it with those people who live and work in this great city, as well as conserve it for future generations. By supporting Freedom we are celebrating that fantastic heritage, and the wider cultural aspects of the city, and we also want to show our support for Hull and its people as we edge closer to being named City of Culture in 2017. 32

SECRET SHEDS AND TRANSPORTS OF DELIGHT

Secret Sheds form a trail of work leading from Hull Interchange around the city to the Fruit Market. Each shed is programmed with pop up performance, surprising art installations, music and other secret delights inside or outside, throughout the weekend of Freedom 2013. Award-winning shows, acclaimed local artists and emerging talents will elevate each humble garden shed into a small but perfectly formed new venue. Try and find all seven sheds, and remember .... Sssshhhhh! Don’t tell anyone what’s inside!

Three Art Cars are on display around the city – Adele Howitt’s vehicle was commissioned by Freedom Festival and planted up in time to be part of this year’s Chelsea Flower Show fringe. This car with real flower power is joined by Andy Plant’s Cremulator, the hearse that can dig its own grave; and the Crazy Golf, designed by Michael Trainor. The Crazy Golf Car is on display at the station Interchange and driven by the Crazy Golfer, offering children the chance to take pocket money from their parents if they take part in his Crazy Golf School! ZIGGY features never-seen-before photographs of the Ziggy Stardust Tour, taken by Hull photographer Peter Hardy in London in 1973. The legendary tour promoted Bowie’s seminal concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, in which Bowie’s alter ego Ziggy Stardust takes on the role of a messenger for extra-terrestrial beings. The exhibition is a tribute to the highly influential Hull-born musicians in the Spiders from Mars, guitarist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer Mick Ronson (1946-1993) and rock bassist, record producer and songwriter Trevor Bolder (1950-2013).

SAND WRITER Moving forward, the machine leaves behind a trail of seemingly random lines of sand, which in time becomes a work of art. Sometimes words, sometimes drawings, the Sand Writer explores the transitory nature of the world and leaves it up to us humans to decide when disintegration should begin and at what rate. The Sand Writer is a wandering act – locations and times are not guaranteed; the sand tells the time. 49
