The Book of PSALMS Psalms 108 – 112 “Exaltation – Vengeance - King/Priest – Praise – Happiness” PSALM 108 – “Be Exalted, O God” (v1-4) A heart of praise is a heart of outreach! Praise Him at dawn, among the peoples, among the nations. Contemplate the praise; it is filled with mercy and truth! (Insight on clouds – Acts 1:1-9) (v5-6) God saves with His Right Hand- At the RIGHT HAND of God is the SAVIOR – Stephen the first martyr of the church saw Jesus at the right hand of the Father - Acts 7:55-56 - But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, "Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" In Hebrews 10:12-14 - But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 12:1-2- Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (v7-13) God will defeat their enemies!

PSALM 109 – “A Cry for Vengeance” This Psalm is also known as a Psalm of Judas Iscariot, it speaks loud clear of his wicked betrayal and his hopeless demise. (v1-5) This is a prophetic view of Jesus battling the wicked who will crucify Him. (v6-13) This passage is clearly Judas Iscariot, in verse 6 “accuser” in Hebrew means “satan”; Peter quotes verse 8 in Acts 1:15-23. (v14-20) Let the evil one reap what he sows. Gal 6:7-8- Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (v21-31) Think of Jesus throughout this passage.

PSALM 110 – “The Psalm of the King-Priest”

C.I. Scofield writes regarding this Psalm- “The importance of the 110th Psalm is attested by the remarkable prominence given to it in the NT. (1) It affirms the Deity of Jesus, thus answering those who deny the full divine meaning of His NT title of Lord (v.1; Mt. 22:41-45; Mk. 12:35-37; Lk. 20:41-44; Acts 2:34-35; Heb. 1:13; 10:1213). (2) It announces the eternal Priesthood of Messiah—one of the most important statements of Scripture (v4: Gen 14:18; Jn. 14:6; 1 Tim. 2:5-6; Heb. 5:6, 7:1-28). (3) Historically, Ps. 110 begins with the ascension of Christ (v1; Jn. 20:17; Acts 7:56; Rev. 3:21). And (4) Prophetically, it looks forward (a) to the time when Christ will appear as the Rod of the LORD’s strength, the Deliverer out of Zion (Ro. 11:25-27), and to the conversion of Israel (v3; Joel 2:27; Zech. 13:9; see Dt. 30:1-9) and (b) to the judgment upon the Gentile powers which precedes the setting up of the Kingdom (vv.5-6; Joel 3:9-17; Zech. 14:1-4; Rev. 19:11-21).” (v1-2) JESUS THE SON OF GOD- Matt 22:41-46 (v3) The believers in Christ will willingly love to serve the King of kings and LORD of lords! His holiness, new birth (born-again), and regeneration - Titus 3:4-7 -But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (v4) A priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek- Melchizedek, which means “king of righteousness,” served as the human priest/king of Salem in Gen. 14:17–20 and provides a picture of the order of Christ’s priesthood (cf. Heb. 5:6; 7:17, 21). The sons of Zadok will serve with Christ in the Millennium as His human priestly associates (cf. Ezek. 44:15; 48:11).1 (v5-7) Observe the day of His wrath - Also known as the day of Jacob’s trouble or the all-inclusive day of the LORD. Isaiah 24:19-21- The earth is violently broken, the earth is split open, the earth is shaken exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall totter like a hut; its transgression shall be heavy upon it, and it will fall, and not rise again. It shall come to pass in that day that the LORD will punish on high the host of exalted ones, and on the earth the kings of the earth. Dan 12:1 - At that time Michael shall stand up, the great 1John F. MacArthur, Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible, (Dallas: Word Publishing) 1997.

prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. Matt 24:21-2- For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened. Luke 21:25-28- "And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near." Rev 3:10-11- Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Rev 6:15-17- And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" From these Scriptures and others it is inescapable that the nature or character of this period is that of wrath (Zeph. 1:15,18; 1 Thess. 1:10; 5:9; Rev. 6:16-17; 11:18; 14:10,19; 15:1,7; 16:1,19), judgment (Rev. 14:7; 15:4; 16:5, 7; 19:2), indignation (Isa. 26:20-21; 34:1-3), trial (Rev. 3:10), trouble (Jer. 30:7; Zeph. 1:14-15; Dan. 12:1), destruction (Joel 1:15; 1 Thess. 5:3), darkness (Joel 2:2; Amos 5:18; Zeph. 1:14-18), desolation (Dan. 9:27; Zeph. 1:14-15), overturning (Isa. 24:1-4, 19-21), punishment (Isa. 24:20-21). No passage can be found to alleviate to any degree whatsoever the severity of this time that shall come upon the earth. – Dwight Pentecost, Things To Come

PSALM 111 – “Praise the LORD!” The first half of the song (letters Aleph through Yod, the first eleven letters of the Heb. Alphabet) is in praise of God’s mighty works of righteousness. (v1) Praise the LORD! (Heb., Hallelu-Yah) is “Hallelujah!” We are to praise the LORD (1) with our whole heart & (2) with the congregation. (v2) We are to study the great works of the LORD! 2 Tim 2:15-16 - Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. (v3-9) Contemplate two things: (1) God’s works: Honorable, glorious, to be remembered, He provides, powerful, truth & justice, He redeems, His covenant is forever. (2) God’s character: Righteous forever, gracious and full of compassion, keeps His covenant, He delivers His promise of the heritage of the nations, truth and uprightness, Holy and awesome is His name. > Insight on “COVENANT” – The concept of covenant between God and His people is one of the most important theological truths of the Bible. By making a covenant with Abraham, God promised to bless His descendants and to make them His special people. Abraham, in return, was to remain faithful to God and to serve as a channel through which God's blessings could flow to the rest of the world (Gen 12:1-3). Even before Abraham's time, God also made a covenant with Noah, assuring Noah that He would not again destroy the world by flood (Gen 9). Another famous covenant was between God and David, in which David and his descendants were established as the royal heirs to the throne of the nation of Israel (2 Sam 7:12; 22:51). This covenant agreement reached its highest fulfillment when Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of the line of David, was born in Bethlehem about a thousand years after God made this promise to David the king. Jesus' sacrificial death served as the oath, or pledge, which God made to us to seal this new covenant. He is determined to give us eternal life and fellowship with Him, in spite of our unworthiness. As the Book of Hebrews declares, "The word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever" (Heb 7:28). This is still God's promise to any person who turns to Him in repentance and faith. (From Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary) (v10) Wisdom comes by having reverence for God and how do you know if you have a good understanding of God? You’ll do His commandments. (Obedience)

PSALM 112 – “Blessed is the Man!” This Psalm divides into two stanzas the character of the Godly (v1-5), and the faithfulness of the servant of God (v6-10). (v1-5) “Blessed” means “happy!” This delight speaks of one that studies and exercises the word of God. What are the results? His descendants will be mighty, blessed, filled with wealth and riches, his right life endures forever, he becomes a light to the world filled with Godly character (v4), he is gracious, caring, and deals with discretion. (v6-10) He is unshakable, fearless, trusts in the LORD, self-controlled, charitable, and is victorious over the wicked
