PSALM 119 Psalm 119:33-48

Lesson 3

First Day: Begin your time in the word by asking God to speak to you. Read Psalm 119:33-40. Read these verses a second time through slowly, and pay attention to each request that the psalmist is making. Write the requests found in vs. 33-37 in your journal. You can use the fill in the blanks below to help you from the ESV version of the bible, or copy them yourself from another version. Teach me_____________________________ Give me______________________________ Lead me______________________________ Incline my heart________________________ Turn my eyes___________________________ Give me_____________ For a couple of these requests the Author states why he is asking. List them next to the requests. Make these requests your prayer today, asking God to give you these as well.

Second Day: Read Psalm 119:33-40.

1. In verse 37, the psalmist asks God to turn his eyes from looking at worthless things. He then asks for life and states that life is found in what? Now read Colossians 3:1-17 and compare this to the truth of finding life in His ways. List some of the worthless things of the old self that we are told to put off in Colossians 3, along with some of “His ways” that we are told to “put on” in Colossians 3.

2. In verse 40, the psalmist speaks of God’s righteousness, and that His righteousness would give him what? Read Romans 5:17. According to this scripture, how has God given us life? Notice in Romans 5:17 the wording as to how we will live that life! Note that in your journal, along with some other thoughts you may have pertaining to this gift of grace and righteousness.

3. Thank God today for His righteousness and that we no longer have to carry the burden of our own works accomplishing life and salvation for us.

Third Day: Pray and ask God to show you wondrous things as you begin to read His word. Read Psalm 119:41-48. In verse 41 the psalmist mentions the Father’s “steadfast love”, in some other translations it is worded as unfailing love, loving kindness, or mercies. All of these speak of the character of our God. Study this word and expound on it in your journal.

In verse 45, the psalmist proclaims that he shall walk in freedom (NLT) or liberty (Amp). The ESV version words this phrase as, “walking in a wide place”. Study this word and expound on it in your journal. Make special note of what condition the psalmist gives to walking in freedom. Meditate on His great love and freedom He gives today.

Fourth Day: Read Psalm 119:41-48.

1. Note in your journal the purposed “I will” statements the psalmist makes in verses 44, 45, 46, and 47. Use the fill in the blanks below to help you.

v.44 I will keep__________ (ESV) v.45 I shall walk_________ (ESV) v.46 I will also speak________(ESV) v.47 I find my delight in_______(ESV)

2. Write verse 41 in your journal. Read and compare Ephesians 2:4-10, Titus 3:4-7 and Lamentations 3:22-26. Write what stands out to you in your journal regarding these.

3. Note the word “trust” in v. 42, the word “hope” in v. 43, and the word “love” in v. 47. What does the psalmist connect each of these words to? In what do you trust, hope, and love?

I will always obey_____________(NIV) I will walk about in____________(NIV) I will speak_____________(NIV) For I shall delight in_________(AMP)

Fifth Day: Read Psalm 119:33-48. Write in your journal a verse or thought that has spoken to you most.
