Pulling it all Together

According to the American Ceramic Society, ceramics is one of the most ancient industries on the planet. Once it was discovered that clay could be dug up, mixed with water, formed into shape and then fired to make a sturdy product, the industry was born. As early as 24,000 BC, animal and human figurines were made from clay and other materials, then fired in kilns partially dug into the ground. As settled communities were established 10,000 years later, tiles were manufactured in Mesopotamia and India. The first use of functional pottery vessels for storing water and drink is thought to be around 9000 BC. With this astonishingly long history between humans and the medium, it’s amazing ceramics continue to be irreplaceable as useful items with a beauty unmatched and are still very desirable all over the world. Within our own Brainerd Lakes area, we are thrilled to be able to enjoy the work of local artisan potter, Cyrus Swann. Also known as Cyrus the Potter, his work includes functional and decorative stoneware and porcelain intended for everyday use or to enhance living spaces. His pottery is as beautiful as it is functional and each piece holds a rustic charm inherent to the north woods around us. Variation and creativity are part of each mug, vase, bowl, tile - each sporting a kaleidoscope of color, texture, shape and feeling. Some of his work gives the impression of playful fun while some other pieces exude household comfort with solemnity and honor.

Pulling it all Together

(Continued from Cover)

“Coming from a family of artistic talent,” Cyrus said, “I have always been drawn to the arts. My father, Anthony Swann, is a poet and an author and my mother has always been a source of inspiration and encouragement. This background and interest led me to Bemidji State University, where I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.”

He also sells functional work in TCAA gift shop. Each piece is a work of art and a unique gift. Definitely a fan of TCAA, Cyrus stated, “We are very fortunate to have TCAA’s support through their efforts to encourage a thriving artists’ community in our area!”

A practicing potter for around 20 years, he currently is creating a full line of functional and decorative stoneware, which is primarily sold through local and regional galleries. Cyrus added, “I also do custom projects working directly with a client, from dinnerware, wedding gifts, mantel pieces, to tile work. Anything is possible.”

Be sure to stop by to see the anxiously-awaited Cyrus Swann solo art show, “Pulling it All Together,” at The Crossing Arts Alliance February 9 thru March 3 to enjoy his creative take on this ancient art form. An opening reception, open to the public, will be held on February 9 from 6:00-8:00pm, and an artist talk for TCAA members will be held just prior at 5:30pm. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served. A free will offering will be welcomed.

Although his strongest interest is pottery, he considers himself a multimedia artist with a variety of artistic works. He stated, “I enjoy combining woodworking, sculpture, salvaged metals and fasteners and ‘found objects’ with ceramic elements to create mixed media work.” This is one of the most challenging aspects that pushes his work and training as an artist and craftsperson. He aspires to make a statement by harmonizing and synthesizing these combinations creatively. All share solid artistry and craftsmanship that clearly show Cyrus’ talent, deft touch, and thoroughness.

Cyrus’ work can also be found at other local and regional locales including: Serendipity Art Gallery, Pequot Lakes; Buffalo Plaid, Nisswa; Macrosties Art Center, Grand Rapids; Waters of Superior, Duluth; Smokey Hills Art, Park Rapids; Watermark Art Center, Bemidji.  Online, you can see his work at: https://www.etsy.com/ shop/cyrusthepotter

Having participated in many shows sponsored by the The Crossing Arts Alliance (TCAA), Cyrus the Potter is looking forward to his first solo show, “Pulling it all Together” in the new TCAA gallery at 711 Laurel Street in historic downtown Brainerd beginning February 9th.

A Message from Your President

We all recognize that there are many factors that secure the on-going success of a nonprofit organization. Clearly, in addition to a great staff, the board of directors plays a key role in a vibrant and growing organization. We at The Crossing Arts Alliance are so very fortunate to have a strong and engaged Board of Directors. Our 12 member board represents a wide range of backgrounds and experience. What all directors have in common is a commitment to serving the mission of The Crossing through engagement, fiscal support, passion and leadership. This past November, at our Annual Membership Meeting, we elected two new directors, whose names you will recognize as frequent contributors to our communities and especially to our local non-profit organizations.

Welcome Pam Thomsen. Pam recently retired after 30 years at Central Lakes College. Most recently, Pam served as the Executive Director of the CLC Foundation. As a Certified Public Accountant, Pam taught accounting at the college for several years. She has served on several boards and volunteers for her church, Kinship Partners, Brainerd Public Schools Foundation, Brainerd Lakes Area Women’s fund, Western MN Steam Threshers, and The Greater MN Two Cylinder Club. In her spare time, Pam and her husband Dennis love spending time with family, especially their 2-year-old granddaughter Claire!

Welcome Jill Carlson. Pam Thomsen

Jill is the Director of Training and Community Relations for Mid- Minnesota Federal Credit Union. She serves in many volunteer roles in the community including Rotary, Brainerd Public Schools Foundation, the Brainerd Women’s Fund and more! Jill’s reputation for promoting “social capital” is well recognized. Raised in Brainerd with deep roots in the arts, Jill is excited to join our board. Jill lives in Nisswa with her partner Troy and their five children. As you know, The Crossing lost a great friend and Director, Mark Munson, to a valiant fight against pancreatic cancer in January. Mark demonstrated what it means to give your all to things you believe in. TCAA and the School of Rock are fortunate to have been one of his many passions. We miss him dearly. The TCAA Executive/Nominating Committee is putting forth the nomination of Linda Holliday to fill Mark’s seat on our Board.

Jill Carlson

Welcome Linda Holliday: Linda divides her work time between her two businesses, Impact Minnesota (Consulting) and Holliday Pottery. Both businesses were launched after her longtime career with the Initiative Foundation, where she most recently served as vice president of organizational development. Linda is a steadfast ambassador for both the arts and the nonprofit sector, and believes both are crucial to building and sustaining healthy individuals, families and communities. She enjoys being outdoors (when it’s warm) gardening, golfing, canoeing, biking, hiking… and is thinking she should probably learn to “suck it up” and do something outside in the winter after living in Minnesota most her life. Linda has three grown children (Noah, Jojo and Bella), a beautiful grandson (Calvin) and lives with her husband Harry in Pillager. Linda will bring a wealth of organizational and leadership skills to The Crossing.

A Message From Your Director By Lisa Jordan Our community lost two great supporters of the arts in recent weeks, Evelyn Matthies and Mark Munson. Both Evelyn and Mark were instrumental to growth and success of The Crossing Arts Alliance and they each have made an indelible mark on our organization. Both Evelyn and Mark were talented artists, both big personalities, and both will be deeply missed. The Board of Directors and I feel proud that TCAA is helping to carry forward the legacy of these amazing people through our children’s programming and exhibits, and through the Mark Munson Memorial School of Rock and upcoming Open Mic program. Our deepest condolences go out to their families and friends. We grieve alongside you.

Crossing Arts Kids

Winter doesn’t dampen the creative spirit at Crossing Arts Kids. In December, TyAnne Rezac 17-335_Ads.qxp_Layout 1 2/17/17 10:28introduced AM Page 5 us to “Snow Dreams” and a painting project that let kids create a layered snowy painting. In January, Alice Larson led a group through the exploration of charcoal and pastels. We look forward to the ever-popular Arty Party in February where we’ll create heart-shaped string art, watercolor paintings, and special Valentine treats. We introduced a punch card at the beginning of 2017 and awarded a prize pack of a sketchbook and art supplies to kids who attended 6 classes through the year. We hope to be able to hand out even more this year, so be sure to bring your punch cards to each Second Saturday!

What’s New in the Gift Shop Kringle Market was a rousing success, bringing in record crowds and sales for the artists in our Gift Shop. In 2016, the first year of the Kringle market, we sold $3600 worth of art and fine craft in the month of November, setting a new record for sales. On the opening DAY of this 2017 Kringle Market, we made $3800 in sales. Almost $9000 worth of goods were sold in the month of November! The increase in sales and in traffic was not only profitable but FUN. We offer thanks to everyone who helped out during November and December, the artists who shared their amazing pieces with the community, and to the visitors who chose to buy local this holiday season. We expect Kringle to be even more fun this year. Now that rotating exhibits are once again on the gallery walls, our Gift Shop space has gotten smaller but no less stunning. You will still find one-of-a-kind artwork in many different forms, locally-written books, beautifully crafted leather goods, woodworking, blown glass, jewelry, pottery, and more. We’ve had many people remark that the space feels inspiring and welcoming, and they come in just to soak it in, something especially soothing in the grey of winter. In February, we look forward to hosting our first featured artist of the year Chase Vreeland - and some of his imaginative artwork. Stop in on February 10th, Second Saturday, to meet Chase and learn about his work. In March we’ll be featuring work from the FocalPOINT photography club. Would you like to nominate an artist for a feature? Or wish to host a one-day trunk show or pop-up exhibit? Want to recommend an artist we should know about?  Volunteer for a shift greeting people in the Gift Shop/Gallery? Send us an email [email protected] or or give us a call at 218-833-0416. An Impulse that Worked Out Well “A barn door! “ Lisa Jordan exclaimed as she viewed the gaping, jagged opening in the brick wall of TCAA’s new home. –“one that glides easily along the wall and takes up little space.” With high expectation, she added a barn door to the Wish List in August’s issue of Crossing Currents. The item caught Carla Benjamin’s eye. Intrigued by such a project, she was even more interested when she saw the estimated cost of $1000. “Surely it can be made for less than that,” she thought. Knowing it might be difficult to do it all alone, Carla asked Jack Kraywinkle to team up on the project. His reply, “This is going to be fun!” And fun it was – along with the work. Using rough-sawn pine, poplar and re-purposed cedar from storage on Carla’s property, they had enough for a large door and a matching smaller door for the second opening. The handle is from a 100 year-old barn. Carla power washed and stained the wood on a beautiful autumn day with the temperature above 50 degrees. She also built the smaller door on her own. According to Jack “Laying out the pieces of wood so they could get along with each other and not fight took some doing,” Finally they had it looking “just right” and ready to be screwed together.

The opening before door

Jack Kraywinkle at work

8 | Crossing Arts Alliance | Currents | February 2018

Construction was done on Carla’s back porch, a good place to work even though it offered some difficulties. There was little room for them to move around. Also, when the door was ready to move, Jack had to maneuver his truck through some deep sand and tall grass to get properly situated so they could drop the 8x8 foot door down six feet to the truck bed. When they arrived at TCAA, they quickly realized the barn door would not go through the alley door. So, they dollied it around to the front. With some twisting and angling, they made it through the front door with less than an inch to spare. Luckily, Bob Larson was there to help. The door still needed to be installed. One day, Jeanne Larson mentioned the need to Bruce Paine and Wadeen Baribeau. Bruce volunteered and he and Wadeen hung the door over the course of a couple of days. They hit a few bumps but managed the challenge just great. Carla and Jack both think they make a good team. Whenever a problem arose, they found a solution together. They had no physical mishaps – not even a hammered thumb. According to Carla, “This project was an impulse that worked out really well.” The door was completed at a much lower cost than estimated. Jack and Carla volunteered all their time and Carla donated the wood. Funding for other supplies came from memorials in honor of Marilyn Rabehl from Crossing

members and the Rabehl family. Marilyn Rabehl was a long time member of TCAA. When given options for how the Rabehl family wanted the memorial donations designated, Karla Rabehl Wahl responded, “Mom grew up on a farm, so the barn door is something she would appreciate.” Now attached to the glides, the door functions perfectly and its beauty adds much to the ambiance of TCAA’s home. Indeed, all who see the barn door are impressed with the functionality and the workmanship of the finished product.

Writer’s Corner Deborah Jacobs is native to the Brainerd Lakes Area. She served on the founding board of The Crossing Arts Alliance and was its first Treasurer and first Executive Director. She has been a professor, restaurateur, arts administrator, primary caregiver, singer, traveler, and gardener. Deborah has previously published academic and journalistic writing, but until a recent sea change in her writing life (entering her 60’s perhaps?), she has been shy about sharing more creative work. These poems and photographs are part of a multi-genre essay titled “The Uses of Obscurity,” which is about inviting the unfamiliar--things unseen and unseeable, unknown and unknowable-- to enrich and to nourish us.   Deborah lives in Nisswa with her husband, Bill Ribbel.

WHY I TRAVEL   Travel, they say, To escape, to get away! Ah, the money poured into  Such an invocation.   Follow it. The money I mean.   Or, try this. Travel to go further in, To nourish parts you didn’t know were starved Until you came around that one bend Or that one, or that—   And you were snapped awake, Snatched right away from absent presence, Led giddily forward, sideways, around and into Life all switch-backed, unfamiliar and delicious.   Eventually, or maybe suddenly You arrive at home To find it changed-Like you.

Haddie Hadachek We enjoyed “An Evening With An Artist” the first of a series of artists talks to be held at TCAA with the fascinating Haddie Hadachek. 30 interested arts enthusiasts bundled into the workshop space to learn more about Haddie’s process, her work with Potters for Peace, and her thoughts on life.  We look forward to welcoming other artists to the series, and will host leather worker Lucio Bavelli on February 1 at 6:00pm. These events are free and open to the public. 14 | Crossing Arts Alliance | Currents | February 2018

Call for Art This time of year can get a little grey. After the hubbub of the holiday season, January can feel like a little bit of a letdown. Cold and cloudy days can start to wear on a person pretty quickly. It was with that in mind that the Gallery

committee decided to launch a counter attack in the form of fun. We have scheduled an exhibit for March called ‘A Riot of Color,’ seeking the brightest, boldest, most colorful artwork we can find. We called this our remedy for cabin fever. Enough of the winter landscape, give us COLOR! Let this call inspire you to pull out some paints, cut up some paper, sew up some fabric, use whatever moves you and CREATE. ‘A Riot of Color’ will be in the gallery in March, don’t miss it! (You’ll find the call for art details on our website - crossingarts.org).

And, thank you, Gambling Sites We appreciate our charitable gambling sites: College Square Gas Station – Pine Square Gas Station These business have designated The Crossing Arts Alliance as their non-profit.
