In 1997, an idea was born, and that idea was forged into a team that has helped change the way men and women pursue fish through a hole in the ice. For 20 years, Ice Team has helped define a culture. From the early days of the Trap Attacks, to the modern revolution of the mobile ice angler, Ice Team has been there through countless ice fishing milestones. On the forefront of ice fishing, Ice Team works hard to educate and inform. We have fostered a generation of anglers by inspiring them to become better ice anglers as well as mentors. And we’ve opened doors that have created connections and camaraderie among fellow ice fishing enthusiasts. As the sport has grown over the years, Ice Team continues to advance and offer new ways to reach ice anglers—both old and new. The Ice Annual magazine (the World’s largest distributed ice fishing publication) hasn’t skipped a beat, and continues to find itself on counter tops and newsstands across the Ice Belt. The modern ice fishing revolution began with Dave Genz’s creation of the Fish Trap, a shelter concept so ingenious it remains essentially unchanged. It’s a sled for your gear, a framework that flips up and down in three seconds, and walls that keep the wind away and let you see down the hole. Traps fit in the back of trucks, in racks on ATVs and snowmobiles, and they slide along behind you from spot to spot. The DROP-KICKTM, was designed by Mr. Dave Genz to be the perfect cadence jig. It features a 90-degree XL hook with a larger tie-eye, stronger wire and increased hook gap for better hook-up percentage compared to other jigs. The centerpiece of our tungsten series is your new bread-and-butter jig. It’s available in five sizes; some tiny, some big enough to bulk up with multiple maggots, waxies or buggy plastics. Take on anything, from monster crappies, bluegills and perch to even bass, walleye and pike. With its bulbous front and tapered back, the jig hangs at about a 45-degree angle, creating a pivoting hook that finds the top of fish’s mouths on the hookset.

This one is as simple as a screwdriver, but it far more versatile. Nip hook or thread it on. Fish it horizontally or curl it into the hook shank on a vertical jig for an ‘upward’ orientation. Trim it and it becomes an awesome little whip tail. Pound it on the bottom, so it looks like a bloodworm coming out. Float it upward, making it twitch and swim. Just make sure you have a good grip on your rod.

We think of it as a five-legged water spider. Like independent tentacles, the legs on the Maki wash with the most subtle currents and movements to undulate in a fish’s face and beg to be sucked in. Lots of customizing potential. Try nipping off the head and using half the ‘head’ with its remaining three legs. Play with it, to match the hatch and whims of the fish.

Another deceptively simple creation, the Polli produces almost random, whiptail movements when paired with any of our tungsten Drop jigs. Best rigged by nip-hooking either end. We most often hook it in the larger head. Sometimes you have to fish small to catch big. The Polli shines under tough conditions: cold front, heavy fishing pressure, lots of sniffers. This bait stands up to close study, never stops moving and forces fish to sample it.

Brainchild of Clam pro James Vladyka, the Jamei is a bug and shrimp imitator. “Thread the hook through main body,” he says, “toward the twin tails. Make sure it’s on there straight. Slide it all the way on, so it fishes horizontally, or put it on the hook only far enough that the twin tails face upward. This gives amazing action.” As with many plastics, a dab of super glue holds it in place and lets you fish harder with less time spent adjusting things.

The Leechi is a mini 1” leech imitation. Lifelike and natural, it looks just like the real deal. Perch, Bluegills, Crappie & Trout love tasty leeches. Thread it, nip it or wacky rig it. The Maki super soft hand pour swims naturally and undulates like a real leech. Panfish love to gorge insects at times but they also like real meat like a scrumptious leech.

Sure. Maybe it looks pretty much the same as you gaze out over the flat surface, the waves all frozen in time. The snow looks kind of like waves if you think about it, but right now you’re picturing what’s under it all. You don’t even have to close your eyes any more to see the edges of the weed flat that always holds good fish, assuming the weeds are still a bit green and standing up. Have to check for that right away. And over to the south there’s that big hump at the entrance to the bay. That usually holds fish in the middle of the winter, and it’s midwinter right now. Gotta check that out, too. So many contour lines. So many way points. Glad we will be drilling with the Clam Ice Auger Conversion. With that many spots to check, we won’t get tired from using a heavy conventional auger.
