Book Introduction We are beginning a study in the book of Joshua. Joshua begins a new era in the life of the nation of Israel, as well as a new section of the Bible. The book opens up with the truth; Moses is dead, and God has appointed a new leader, Joshua. God gave Joshua a three-fold mission. He is to take the children of Israel and enter the land, conquer the land and possess the land. The book of Joshua is the story of God’s faithfulness to fulfill the promise He had made to Abraham so long ago in Genesis 12. Joshua also opens up a new section of the Bible known as the books of History. Genesis through Deuteronomy, the first five books of the Bible, are known as the Law or the Torah. Joshua begins the books of history concerning the nation of Israel.

Author: Joshua (see Joshua 5:1, 6 – use of the word “we” and “us”) also see Joshua 24:26. Date of Writing: 14th Century BC

Wednesday Night Preview – Joshua 1:1-5:12 This week we are beginning the book of Joshua, the first book of the Bible named after a person. Joshua chronicles the story of how Israel goes from being a nomadic nation wandering in the wilderness to a nation with a homeland and borders, similar to what they have today. This Wednesday night we are going to see how God prepares both Joshua and the children of Israel to enter the land. We will see the process by which they crossed over the Jordan River, and we will look at the significance of that spot later in the New Testament. We will see God affirm His covenant with them. We will see how God helps the children of Israel with their vertical relationship with Him, so they will be able to deal with the horizontal battles that are right in front of them. There are so many great things to talk about, hope you can be with us!
