Palm Sunday & The Passion Holy Communion March 25, 2018 ___________________________________________ March 25, 2018 ● 7:45, 9:30 &11:00 Service WELCOME TO EMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH INTRODUCTION The first reading reflects Christ emptying himself of divine power and protection, willingly becoming vulnerable to those who struck him and put him to death. With Christ we lament his suffering and all human suffering, but expect God's final vindication. Mark's passion story begins with an unnamed woman anointing his head, perhaps to proclaim him Messiah, and Jesus saying she has anointed him beforehand for burial. Mark's Easter story will begin with women going to anoint Jesus for burial, only to find that he has been raised, God's living Anointed One. Palm branches are distributed before the service begins. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The assembly stands. GATHERING Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL: Mark 11:1–11 The holy gospel according to St. Mark, the eleventh chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2and said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3If anyone says to you, 'Why are you [2]

doing this?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'" 4They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" 6They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! 10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"11Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. BLESSING OF PALMS The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. A brief silence is kept. We praise you, O God, for redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ. Today he entered the holy city in triumph and was proclaimed messiah and king by those who spread garments and branches along his way. Bless these branches and those who carry them. Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross, so that, joined to his death and resurrection, we enter into life with you; through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. PROCESSION Let us go forth in peace, in the name of Christ. Amen. [3]

PROCESSIONAL HYMN

All Glory, Laud, and Honor

Refrain: All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer, king, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. 1--You are the king of Israel and David's royal Son, now in the Lord's name coming, our King and Blessed One. Refrain 2--The company of angels are praising you on high; creation and all mortals in chorus make reply. Refrain 3--The multitude of pilgrims with palms before you went. Our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present. Refrain 4--To you, before your passion, they sang their hymns of praise. To you, now high exalted, our melody we raise. Refrain 5--Their praises you accepted; accept the prayers we bring, great author of all goodness, O good and gracious king. Refrain The presiding minister concludes the procession. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

(9:30, 11:00) PROCESSIONAL ANTHEM (The assembly is seated). Emmanuel Choir On that Day When He Rode into Jerusalem Beall On that day when he rode into Jerusalem, everyone came to see the promised King. On that day when he rode into Jerusalem for miles and miles around you could hear them sing. They sang, “Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!” They sang, “Hosanna!” to the promised King. “Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!” Glad hosannas made the heavens ring! On that day when he rode into Jerusalem, everyone thought he would wear a crown. No one guessed when he rode into Jerusalem, how the tide would turn and bring him down. So they sang, “Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!” They sang, “Hosanna!” to the promised King. “Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!” Glad hosannas made the heavens ring! On that day when he rode into Jerusalem, everyone thought he would rule the land. No one knew when he rode into Jerusalem that soon there would be nailprints in his hand. So they sang, “Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!” They sang, “Hosanna!” to the promised King. “Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!” Glad hosannas made the heavens ring! “Hosanna!” The assembly stands. GREETING From our God who loves us with an everlasting love, who brings forth a new creation in Christ, who leads us by the Spirit in the wilderness: Grace and abundant mercy be with you all. And also with you. INTRODUCTION As we now enter into the contemplation of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and meditate on the salvation of the world through his sufferings, death, burial, and resurrection, let us pray. PRAYER OF THE DAY Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The assembly is seated. FIRST READING: Philippians 2:5–11 (Please turn to your pew Bible, New Testament, Page 210.) Christ did not act to attain status and glory but was obedient to God even to the point of death. Following Christ’s example, we do not seek personal status or glory but care for others as God cared for us in Christ’s death. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. [5]

HYMN OF THE DAY (7:45, 9:30)

Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross

1

Jesus, keep me near the cross, there's a precious fountain; free to all, a healing stream flows from Calv'ry's mountain. Refrain In the cross, in the cross be my glory ever; till my ransomed soul shall find rest beyond the river.

2

Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me; help me walk from day to day with its shadow o'er me. Refrain In the cross, in the cross be my glory ever; till my ransomed soul shall find rest beyond the river. 3

Near the cross I'll watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever, till I reach the golden strand just beyond the river. Refrain In the cross, in the cross be my glory ever; till my ransomed soul shall find rest beyond the river. (11:00)

Above All [7]

THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, The only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, Begotten, not made, Of one Being with the Father; Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; He ascended into heaven And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, * who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, And the life of the world to come. Amen *Or, "who proceeds from the Father." The phrase “and the Son” is a later addition to the creed.

PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ, whose suffering and death gave salvation to all. You gather your people around the tree of the cross, transforming death into life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Blessed are you, O God of the universe. Your mercy is everlasting [11]

and your faithfulness endures from age to age. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. With this bread and cup we remember our Lord's passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. LORD'S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Invited to the Lord’s Table are all baptized Christians who celebrate with us the Real Presence of Christ in the Sacrament. The Communion is administered by “intinction,” that is, the bread is handed to the communicant and the communicant dips the bread into the wine. If you are not able to take the wine, simply take the bread. Children are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you desire Communion, but are not able to come forward, please let an usher know and we will bring it to you. If you do not wish to partake of the Sacrament, simply remain seated when your row is directed to come forward.GLUTENFREE wafers available; simply ask for them when you go to commune.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION Come to Christ, broken and poured out for you. [12]

COMMUNION When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond Amen. COMMUNION MUSIC
