Region 12 Director’s Message This will be my last message to the Region. I would like to express my appreciation for your involvement. It has taken a lot of people contributing countless hours to keep the cart rolling, and for that I want to thank you. Our Orlando Convention, Discover the Magic – The Arabian Horse, is coming up November 17 and I am looking forward to visiting with those attending. At this time there are 28 delegates and 7 guests registered to attend. We have 48 allotted delegates. Our caucus will be Thursday, November 18, at 7:00 PM in the Knave/Scribe Room at the Buena Vista Hotel. The meeting agenda is in process and is nearly completed. There are 43 resolutions for us to review and decide upon at this convention. It will be a fulfilling experience working together for the betterment of our horse and organization.

Newsletter Deadline— 20th of the Month

In closing, I wish you all continued success, and may the holidays bring joy to you and your family.

Arabian Horse Services, Guy Benefield and Jeanne Johnson, had an enjoyable time at the Albany Autumn Classic Charity horseshow in Albany, Georgia this past October 2nd. Many of you may not realize that this is and USEF and AQHA rated show with $10,000.00 added prize money. We discussed the possibility with show management that this be approved as a "C" rated Arabian show next year. If not approved, it is still an amazingly fun show to participate in, the crowd is so supportive and fun. This show is judged by both a USEF and AGHA judge as well as an approved Paso Fino judge to help round out the program. They post all their results on Gaitkeeper. To reserve bragging rights, we had much success at this year's show. We decided to show our 1/2 Arabian/DHH English mare (Miss Teakk) in Mare halter and got a 3rd out of the 11 against the best looking stock type horses around. It was a last minute decision to take our 4 year old 1/2 Arab/ASB gelding, Good and Plenty (The Licorice Drop Kid) x (AF Ellenai) dam of Scarlet O'Butler and Elle Heir and Heir Apparant). We were so excited when he beat 40 other horses by winning both the W/T 19 & over English and the W/T Open Championship. To further our excitement, Miss Teakk (pictured right) won all 4 of her English Classes, Saddleseat Pleasure Open, Arabian Saddleseat Pleasure Open, Arabian Saddle Seat Pleasure Championship and Saddleseat Pleasure Championship. It is our hope to see more English horses at this show next year, certainly a fun and memorable event.

DGAHA Youth Rider Thankful submitted by Ben Smith Seven years ago, an inexperienced twelve year old girl stepped into the cool crisp morning air and her first Class A Arabian show, the Ruffout. She began her show career in the ring with her eight year old pure bred Arabian gelding named Rohara Minstrel. From those first days as a Country English Pleasure pair in Baker, to their Top Five in JOTR CEP and four Top Ten titles in Mounted Native Costume, with places in between at Regions IX, XII, and XIV, Sarah Roscoe and Minstrel have always returned to their home show and club, the Ruffout and Dixie Gulf Arabian Horse Association. After five years of wet saddle pads and hard work with nominal successes, the 2008 show season resulted in Sarah’s first Top Five in Pure Bred Country English Pleasure JOTR at the famous Kentucky Horse Park in Region XIV. It was also their second year competing in their new forte, Mounted Native Costume. They competed at their first Youth Nationals in Albuquerque and brought home the first Top Ten honor in Pure Bred Mounted Native Costume JOTR. After that, Sarah decided to retire Minstrel but it only lasted until she attended the Ruffout show in the fall as a spectator and supporter of DGAHA. That was all it took for the spark of competing and showing to stir in Sarah! 2009 was a great year for Sarah, Minstrel and her new Half-Arabian mare, Krewe de Gras WP. She returned to Youth Nationals with both horses and by this time Sarah and Minstrel’s relationship had grown substantially. She placed all her trust and fai th in him. This bond brought a second Top Ten title in Mounted Native Costume JOTR and the Fall Ruffout show in Baker was her best ever. She and her mare, Krewe won the Youth High Point award and the Andrew Ross Memorial award. Sarah, once again, planned on retiring Min after the show. However, again, the show bug caught Sarah. Sarah decided in May of this year to return Youth Nationals for the last time as a youth competitor. Additionally, she was al so asked to represent Region XII and DGAHA at the Youth Convention as a voting delegate. Sarah said, “It was an honor to represent DGA HA and Region XII at the convention. I began my youth career with DGAHA and Region XII and I am ending it representing them”. Sarah’s last competition as a youth rider resulted in two more Top Ten titles and her first in Mounted Native Costume JTR. S he is currently fourth overall in the nation in Mounted Native Costume JOTR and only two points behind the reserve champion on the car ds. She said, “Overall, this was the best show we’ve ever had. Min showed me another side of him I had not seen. He gave it his all a nd words can’t describe the pride and joy I still feel to this day at Min’s commitment to me in our last Youth Nationals.” A young girl with her first horse has grown into a confident and successful equestrian with a love for Min bright enough to light up the sky. “Over the years, I have made great friends, had a lot of help from different trainers and learned a lot about myself and Arabians. Getting to know Ben and Linda Smith has been very rewarding fo r me personally. It is with the support of my family and friends like them and others that have helped me go from tears of frustration to an overwhelming love and joy for Minstrel. I would not change anything over the past eight years. They have been the best of my life.” It is certain Sarah and Minstrel will continue their career in the amateur division and equally certain they will continue to return to their “home” show and represent their club, The Ruffout and the DGAHA.
