Expand the focus of environmental design beyond features designed for “the forgetful.” Attendees will learn to infuse settings with movement and get beyond “seated” group reminiscence to hands-on discovery. Design familiar habitats accommodating serendipity, sociability, movement, and moods. Move beyond iconic and yet inconsequential features to more intentional uses of life “vignettes,” evoking more natural movements and social lives (of elders and facilitators/caregivers). Designers, providers, facilitators, and caregivers will take away criteria for liberating capabilities of those engaged in adult-onset cognitive changes.

Georgia Tech’s HomeLab brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers and a community of more than 550 older adults to support technology innovation for the growing older adult population. Our methods allow us to go beyond typical in-lab testing by conducting research in the homes of actual users. The detailed home inventory data can be used to identify accessibility barriers, health and safety issues, and fall risks in older adults’ homes. HomeLab provides the capability to investigate aging in place and person-environment fit at various levels of analyses from individual case studies to regional descriptive statistics.

COMMUNITY TOURS Saturday, April 18 | 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Green House Residences at Stadium Place This community offers a home-like environment for physical rehabilitation, skilled nursing, and long-term care in Baltimore City. The residences are based on a home floor plan with intimate spaces and warm interior designs centered on a shared living space (hearth). The staffs of each home help the elders live as independently as possible. The Green House model replaces traditional nursing home facilities with inviting, comfortable, social living spaces and private bedrooms and bathrooms, helping elders to lead happier and more satisfying lives. Respite care is also available at the Green House, providing short-term stays for loved ones when residents’ caregivers must be away.

Brightview Towson Brightview communities offer a holistic approach to care and life enrichment.  A plan of care is developed for each resident’s unique needs. Services and amenities include restaurant-style meals throughout the day, housekeeping, scheduled transportation, a café/bar, a beauty/barber salon, laundry service, and more.

Monday, April 20 | 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Household at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital This community is dedicated to providing superior health and quality-of-life programs with a continuum of care for the elderly, frail, and ill in a warm, caring environment. Levindale is the first registered Eden Alternative center in Maryland, focusing on companionship, empowerment, and spontaneity in the daily lives of residents and patients. The Neighborhood Model in use turns rigid nursing homes into places where residents’ desires are the priority. The Households at Levindale is a $31 million expansion on the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Campus that opened to residents in January 2012.

This discussion will provide the perspectives of an owner, architect, interior designer, and general contractor to answer the question, “How can we improve resident quality of life at an affordable price?” Through real-world experiences associated with renovations spanning more than three years and 16 phases, the audience will understand how creative design solutions can convert medical models into modern miracles without new construction.
