REMEMBER HOW GOD HAS LED DEUTERONOMY 8:1-20 Lean In 1. What do you tend to forget, despite all efforts to remind you? Look Down Read Deuteronomy 8:1-20 2. What was the one pre-requisite for entering the Promise Land according to v.1? 3. Why was it crucial for the Israelites to reflect on the past, at this stage in their journey? 4. What are the lessons that the Lord taught the Israelites while they were in the desert for 40 years? 5. What is the intended effect of God’s action in the wilderness? List the ways God took care of the Israelites in the wilderness. 6. In this context (vv.1-4, 15-16), what does it mean to be disciplined by God “as a man disciplines his son” (v.5)? 7. Why do you think the Israelites needed to experience this discipline before entering the Promised Land? 8. Why was the testing and waiting in the wilderness worth the wait (vv. 6-9)? 9. What must the Israelites guard against (vv.10-20)? What aspects of “spiritual gluttony” do you see here? Look Out 10. List people in the Bible that have had a “desert experience” (Moses, David, Elijah, etc.) Which of their experiences do you resonate with the most? Why? Look In 11. In v.1-5, we read Israel’s story of God’s guidance. Take some time and write down your story of how God has led you ‘all the way in the desert.’ a. How long was your desert experience? b. What was your relationship with God’s Word like during that season? c. Where did you see God provide your needs (but not necessarily your wants)? d. How did God refine your faith? 12. Why are the more significant lessons in life learned through the hardest times of life? 13. Review the cycle of experience described here: discipline in the desert followed by fruitfulness in the Promised Land, then complacency. Are you somewhere on that spectrum right now? 14. Is it harder for you to maintain a proper relationship with God in prosperity or in hardship? Why?
