RESEARCH IN THE ART ROOM

STORIES FROM TEACHERS October 13 | 7-8 pm ET

In the summer of 2014, the NAEA Professional Learning Through Research (PLR) working group (part of the NAEA Research Commission), developed and implemented a survey to gather information on how NAEA members understand and use research to develop and promote the value of research in art educational settings. The survey included twenty questions aimed to gauge art educators’ understandings of research with particular focus on the K-12 art educator. The PLR has been hard at work analyzing data to inform future professional development initiatives on research within NAEA. With this in mind, here are some highlights gathered from the survey: A total of 622 NAEA members completed the survey. This included members from any division within NAEA. 84.5% of respondents are currently collecting data. 82.5% of respondents have some interest or a high interest in research. The top five publications respondents read are: Art Education (83.67%) School Arts (60.2%) Arts and Activities (42.35%) Studies in Art Education (39.8%) Visual Arts Research (4.59%) Note: Participants were able to mark multiple responses for the questions above hence the answers total more than 100%.

Respondents were most interested in the following types of research-related professional development: State conference research workshops (66.15%) NAEA Webinars (49.74%) Online sessions about using NAEA journals (41.54%) Mentor programs (35.9%) Note: Participants were able to mark multiple responses for the questions above hence the answers total more than 100%
