Week 12: A Few Good Men....and Women (Judges; Book of Ruth) The Book of Judges is the seventh book of the Bible and takes place between the 14th and 11th century bce. These are the years between the conquest of Canaan (the Promised Land) by Joshua and the formation of the first Kingdom of Israel (c. 1050 bce). During this 300-400 year period, the 12 Israelite Tribes formed a loose confederation. There was no centralized government. Rather, “in those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (17:6; 21:25). During this time of anarchy, God appointed a series of leaders–or judges–to bring salvation to His disobedient children. The book of Judges records the circumstances of thirteen such judges. (Eli and Samuel, recorded in 1 Samuel, complete the list of the judges.) The Book of Judges should have been a continuation of the success of Joshua. Instead, Israel suffered a series of cycles from faith to failure. The cycles actually represent a downward spiral–each cycle being progressively worse than the one before. Judges 2:11-19 serves as the thesis of the Book of Judges contents! The recurring sin/salvation cycle of Judges can be summarized as: 1) SIN–the people did evil against God and humanity; 2) SERVITUDE–God allows oppressors to overcome His people; 3) SORROW–the people repent of their cruelty and cry out to God; 4) SALVATION–God sends a judge to deliver them. The last four chapters describe such degradation and apostasy, that I dared not include it in our reading this week. And it seems as if the compiler of the canon agreed, as Ruth is like a soap to cleanse us from the mind-defilement of Judges.

RUTH – Redemption

Chapter

4

The Book of Ruth is named after its central figure, Ruth from the country of Moab. She is the great-grandmother of King David and according to the Gospel of Matthew, an ancestress of Jesus. The book tells of Ruth accepting Yahweh as her God and His people as her own. The book is rich and variegated but the top three themes seem to be Redemption, Hesed–or lovingkindness, and God’s inclusiveness.
