St. Paul Winter Carnival Rice Park Saint Paul’s beautiful and historic Rice Park acts as center stage for the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. Check out the variety of events and activities to be hosted in Rice Park this year: Ice Carving Displays One of Winter Carnival’s signature events, the eversparkly ice displays, are free and open to the public and are on display all 10 days of carnival in Rice Park. The beautiful masterpieces are created by area

artists using an array of tools including knives, chainsaws and other tools. See the artists at work (and competing for prizes and bragging rights) the first Thursday through Sunday of carnival. The displays are lit at night and are a great time to be downtown Saint Paul to take in other activities. Endless photo opportunities are available during the competition as well as with the completed creations. The creations are removed when Saint Paul

Winter Carnival ends – so be sure to stop by the see them! Both team and individual competitions are guided by a strict set of rules, requiring artists to utilize their best creative thinking. Additionally, competitor’s sculptures must be consistent with a sketch that was proposed and selected by the Selection Committee. For information on all events go to: www.wintercarnival.com

Five Secrets for Quitting Smoking in 2015 Most Smokers Say They Want to Quit - Many Will Resolve to Quit for New Year’s Most smokers say they want to quit and many will make a New Year’s Resolution to quit in 2015. If this is your year to quit, the American Lung Association shares five tips to help you on the path to success: 1. It’s never too late to quit. While it’s best to quit smoking as early as possible, quitting smoking at any age will enhance the length and quality of your life. You’ll also save money and avoid the hassle of going outside in the cold to smoke. You can even inspire those around you to quit smoking! 2.Learn from past experiences. Most smokers have tried to quit before and sometimes people get discouraged thinking about previous attempts. Instead, treat those experiences as steps on the road to future success. Think about what helped you during those tries and what you’ll do differently in your next quit attempt.

3. You don’t have to quit alone. Telling friends and family that you’re trying to quit and enlisting their support will help ease the process. Expert help is available from the American Lung Association and other groups. Friends who also smoke may even join you in trying to quit!

Our Freedom From Smoking® program is available in an in-person group setting or online. Our Freedom From Smoking® Helpline (1-800-LUNGUSA) is staffed with smoking cessation experts who can get you started on a quit plan, answer your questions and help you on the path to becoming tobacco-free. Two Rivers Community Land Trust If you’re looking for an affordable home in Washington County, the Two Rivers Community Land Trust can provide you with many of the benefits of homeownership in a model that allows you to build equity while ensuring the affordability of the home for years to come. How does it work? Community land trusts, or CLTs, develop housing through renovation or new construction and sell the homes to low- to moderate-income families. The CLT leases the land to the families, who

agree to restrictions on how the house can be sold in the future. As a result, CLTs are able to produce highquality affordable housing and keep it affordable for future generations. There are more than 5,000 CLT properties in over 150 communities across the nation. Who owns what? The CLT owns the land under the home. The homebuyer purchases the house. This reduces the price by approximately 25%. Unlike condo or homeowners associations, the Two Rivers CLT charges only a $25 month to

lease the land under your house. What happens when the house is sold? When the owner chooses to sell their home, they receive their original investment back, plus 25% of any appreciation in the value of the property. For example, if a buyer bought a $100,000 home and in five years its value increased to $140,000, the owner would agree to sell the property for $110,000. That helps keep the property affordable well into the future. Where can I get more information? You can visit the Two Rivers CLT website www.tworiversclt.com or call 651994-9194.
