REVIEW • 1 Cor 15:1-2 - You heard the Gospel, and believed…but your denial of the resurrection may be evidence you believed in vain. • 1 Cor 15:3-10 - Look at the evidence and hundreds of eye witness that the resurrection is true. • 1 Cor 15:11-19 - If you deny the resurrection then you are still in your sin • 1 Cor 15:20-28 - The resurrection is true and it’s the next step in God bringing subjection to the universe

ILLUSTRATIONS (V29-32) Paul Provides Two Examples Example #1 – People Baptizing for the dead (1 Corinthians 15:29) Example #2 – Paul sacrificing his life (1 Corinthians 15:30-32)

BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD (V29) Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them?

1 CORINTHIANS 15:30-32 1 Corinthians 15:30-32 Why are we also in danger every hour? I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, LET US EAT AND DRINK, FOR TOMORROW WE DIE.

BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD (V29) EXAMPLE #1: Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them?

BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD (V29) Otherwise (v20-28), what will those (Unbelievers / Christians / Erring Christians) do (achieve/accomplish) who are baptized for the dead (Believers)? [Title for Living Christians?] If the dead (Believers) are not raised at all, why then are they (Unbelievers / Christians / Erring Christians) baptized for them (Believers)?

BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD (V29) Huh? 200 Interpretations! 1)

Some Corinthians were baptized as a result of the testimony of Christian martyrs

2)

Some Corinthians were having themselves re-baptized on behalf of deceased Christians who were not baptized before dying.

3)

No room for Mormon baptism (baptism for unbelievers so they have a second chance)

BOTTOM LINE: Paul is not affirming, but simply using this example for argument sake

ILLUSTRATIONS (V29-32) EXAMPLE #2 Paul sacrificing his life (1 Corinthians 15:30-32)

• Note the progression from ‘danger(risk)…hour’ to ‘die (suffer)daily’ to ‘death implied’ • Who are the wild animals? (wild animals or metaphor for the dangers of ministry, could not be “fed to lions” as Paul was a Roman Citizen)

WHAT IS THE POINT? (V30-32) If No Resurrection…then… No point baptizing for the dead! No Profit in Denying my self, No Profit in taking up the Cross, No Profit in Suffering, No Profit in laying down my life for Christ!

for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. (1 Cor. 6:5 2x) (acting unwise)

1 CORINTHIANS 15:35

LET’S PRESUME THERE IS A RESURRECTION (some in Corinth really don’t believe there is) ANSWER ME THESE 2 QUESTIONS

TWO KEY QUESTIONS / OBJECTIONS TO THE RESURRECTION 1 CORINTHIANS 15:35

But someone will say, “How are the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come?”

YOU FOOL! (V36) You don’t know or understand spiritual truths! You are thinking worldly, like an unbeliever. However, bless their foolishness! Paul reveals amazing truths!

YOU FOOL! (V36) YOU NONSENSE PERSON! Who uses this expression? Jesus / Mat 5:22 Angry (Not quite the same use) Jesus / Mat 23:17 Swearing Jesus / Luke 12:20 Eternity

1 CORINTHIANS 15:36-38

QUESTION #1 But someone will say, “How are the dead raised?”

FOUNDATION (GENERAL REVELATION) That which you sow does not come to life unless it dies; (v36) Principle #1: Death then Resurrection John 12:24 “Truly, truly, I (Jesus) say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

FOUNDATION (GENERAL REVELATION) and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare grain, perhaps of wheat or of something else. (v37)

Principle #2: First form, is not Final Form Transformation! 1 Cor 15:51 …we will all be changed…

FOUNDATION (SPECIAL REVELATION) But God gives it a body just as He wished (sovereignly purposed), and to each of the seeds a body of its own. (v38) Principle #3: Impossible without the Sovereign God 1 Corinthians 12:18 But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.

FOUNDATION: REVIEW Principle #1: Death then Life after death/Resurrection Principle #2: First form, is not Final Form Principle #3: Not Possible without our Sovereign God Q: “How are the dead raised?” A: God

10 Contrasts

1 CORINTHIANS 15:39-57

Heavenly vs. Earthly (1)

EARTHLY (V39) All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fish. (v39) The 4 Genesis 1:20-23 (Day 5) – Fish & Birds Genesis 1: 24-31 (Day 6) – Man and Beasts

HEAVENLY (V40-41) There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. The Three Genesis 1:14-19 (Day 4) – Sun, Moon, Stars
