Riverboat Adventure for Young People Sunday 19th - Tuesday 21st August 2018 Sail 4 Cancer is delighted to be working with the River Thames Boat Project to provide a fantastic boating break full of adventure for teenagers living with cancer and their chosen friend. This trip is for youngsters between 11 and 14 years old (we can sometimes take older guests, but NEVER younger) and they are encouraged to bring along a friend or sibling (in the same age range & gender) to keep them company. The trip starts late afternoon on Sunday and returns on the Tuesday afternoon. The youngsters eat and sleep on board the boat. The trip will have a qualified skipper and crew onboard, though everyone will be expected to get involved with all aspects of boating including steering, locking, ropework - and cooking for crewmates! Ideal for those who have never been on a riverboat before, those with previous experience will also find they have plenty to learn. There are no medical staff on board this trip, so we cannot take anyone requiring constant medical attention, although it is often feasible to take those with mobility restrictions if we have prior notice. This opportunity is an incredible confidence boost for all who participate - there is no time to talk about illness as there is so much going on, with the overall emphasis on teamwork, adventure - and FUN. There will be an excellent variety of boating and non-boating activities planned to keep the youngsters busy for the whole trip. There is no cost for these trips apart from travel to and from the starting point. The youngsters eat and sleep on the boat. Some of the lovely feedback from previous Riverboat Adventures: "Being given this fun trip makes me feel so positive that life is normal and it takes my mind off my diagnosis! It was great fun and everyone was so kind. Pizza making was awesome and we all bonded. I made two new friends who I’m going to stay in touch with. Thank you so much." Varun (13) "Brooke had such an amazing time! She loved driving the boat and mooring with the rope. All the crew were so nice and helpful. Brooke feels more confident to do things and said she would love to come back again." Mum of Brooke (11) "The boat trip was amazing. The kids are trusted to behave but kept an eye on enough so that it's safe. They get to participate if they want to and it builds their confidence. It's good for them to do something completely different and take their minds off of their illness." Parents of Joseph (11) "This is one of the best experiences I've ever had. I felt very comfortable with the crew and other people. It boosted my confidence as well." Natasha (14)
