Rooted in Community | 1, 2 Samuel
No. 7067

“David served the purposes of God in his generation and then he died.” (Acts 13:36) There is nothing better that could be said of a person than that: that we served the purposes of God in our generation. But what was David’s secret? I think he would tell us that he leaned into other people so he could serve God’s purposes. If we are to do the same, we must be rooted in community.
What happens when we root ourselves in community? I. A community will chain their soul to yours (1 Samuel 18:1-4, 20:4, 41) Why we don’t want this type of community: 1. We don’t think it’s really necessary (John 17:20-21; Ephesians 4:11-13; 1 Corinthians 12:12-31) 2. We settle for pseudo-community "Everyone says they want community and friendship. But mention accountability or commitment to people, and they run the other way." —Timothy Keller 3. We have been hurt before (1 Samuel 18-20)
II. A community will show up when you want to give up (Psalm 142:4; 1 Samuel 22:1-5; 1 Samuel 23:15-18) III. A community will challenge you when you need to change (2 Samuel 11-12) IV. A community will fight for you (2 Samuel 23:8-39) Study questions are available each Monday on the Sermon Plus page of our website at elmbrook.org/sermonplus.
