Estates of Russell Creek Be Prepared in the Event of a Devastating Loss

I certainly hope none of you ever have to go through something like this but here are a tips to know in advance to be prepared in the case of a fire or other devastating house loss: • Have escape ladders for upstairs bedroom windows, know how to use them and teach children how to use them. We did not have these but thank goodness we were not home when the fire happened. When we move back in, we will have these for the future. The floor to my daughter’s room collapsed and had she been in her room (this fire did happen in the middle of the night), she may have been trapped by the fire if she didn’t get out early. • Teach children fire safety rules and have a safe place everyone knows where to go (Ex. the neighbor house across the street) • Know what you have, what it is worth and keep photos of them on file in a fire safe box. In our case, even though most of our furniture and personal items are damaged and not repairable, we were lucky that we can go in the house & identify what they are, and I did have receipts on file to prove their value. Insurance companies will ask you for a detailed inventory of what you had – and if the fire had burned to the point that we couldn’t even see what we had (or think of those victims from Hurricane Ike for whom their homes are washed away), it would have been much harder to prepare this inventory. Take a photo of every room, and store it safely. Update photos if you make major renovations or large purchases. • Back up your computer regularly, especially if you have lots of digital photos, on an external hard drive or other storage device. I do this regularly thank goodness or I might have lost years of photos of my children. Even though the external hard drive was melted, the data was recoverable. It would be even better to store the back up in a fire safe box. • Store priceless video tapes such as home videos of your children, in a fire safe box. A friend suggested this to me when my children were small and I took her advice thankfully so I still have all our baby videos. • Photos in drawers and cabinets may be salvaged – the smoke didn’t damage those as much as the ones in the open. • CDs/DVDs in their cases can be salvaged – even when many other things around them melted. Keep them in their cases in cabinets (if they are stored out in the open they are more vulnerable to the heat of the fire). - Erin Longley

House Fire on Norwich Lane -

A Sincere Thank You!

As you may know, on August 12, there was a severe fire at our home on Norwich Lane due to lightning. Thankfully, we were out of town, so my children and I didn’t experience the trauma of waking up in the middle of the night to a fire, or worse, being trapped or hurt. We did lose our sweet 14 1/2 year old cat Chester, but we are comforted in knowing that he would have passed on quickly and not suffered. The Plano Fire Department was amazing in their efforts to put out the fire and to protect what was left of our home and the property inside. After putting out the fire, they boarded windows & doors, and moved whatever furniture, etc. that they could salvage to a dry area in the house. The immediate outpouring of help from so many of you, even many people we didn’t even know, was amazing and quite overwhelming! Right away, neighbors and friends were calling and showing up to help me sort through things. Many people donated clothing and food, the Wyatt PTA donated kitchen and bath supplies, friends loaned us mattresses and furniture until we can get more settled on our own, … the list is endless. I wish I could mention everyone’s name who helped, but that would fill several pages! My children and I sincerely want to thank all of you who helped us – you will never know how much we appreciate your generosity and kindness!!! If you have gone by the house on Norwich, from the outside the house doesn’t look that bad with a few boarded windows and the continuous smell of smoke, but inside the damage was very severe – it is now just a very large fireplace. However, the damage is repairable and by the time you read this article, we hope that the demolition stage will have begun. The house will be gutted inside and the outside structure will remain. The repairs are estimated to take up to a year, so we hope to be back in our house sometime next summer. For now, we are renting another house in the neighborhood so we are close by! Thank you again for all of the generous support from so many of you – we are truly, truly grateful!! Sincerely, Erin, Collin & Allie Anne Longley

Holiday Pet Tips Submitted by Melissa Todd

As you celebrate the season, it’s important to keep your furry friends safe and stress-free. Household changes and activity can be very hard on pets. • Be careful with holiday decorations. Many plants and berries (poinsettias, mistletoe, ivy and holly to name a few) can be toxic to pets. Also be careful where you hang ornaments and decorations…the higher the better! • Gatherings of people and holiday parties can frighten animals. Plan a safe place for them to retreat too when company arrives or when Halloween doorbells are ringing. • Holiday leftovers can wreak havoc with your pet’s digestive system. This is especially true with older pets. Turkey drippings, poultry bones and chocolate can all result in a trip to the emergency vet.

Estates of Russell Creek New Stress Reducer - House Plants Submitted by Dr. Tenesha Weine

House plants look pretty, fill empty spaces on the floor, and reduce stress. That’s right, reduce stress. Being close to house plants makes us feel good. House plants reduce heart rate, blood pressure, and help with skin conductivity. Research has shown that people in planted offices recover from stress more quickly than those in un-planted offices. No, the nursery with the pink flamingos around the corner from my office did not pay me to write this! It’s true, the effect is seen more significantly in situations where the tasks being performed are repetitive or require only low levels of concentration by improving the air quality and people’s perception of the building. Think about it, humans were made to be outside in the woods or jungle, not inside of a cubicle with florescent lighting for eight hours. So, plants in the office help remind our cells there is life outside the four walls of our office. Plants also give employees a sense of nurturing and caring, and is a highly interactive and a satisfying experience as it relates to our innate desire to take care of something else living. A number of studies also show plants can reduce the incidence of minor health complaints. Planted buildings have less airborne dust and increased humidity and static electricity. This is mainly because plants

are slightly negatively charged compared with their surroundings. This attracts positivity charged dust particles and reduces the number in the air and on the surrounding surfaces. A Norwegian study, after plants were installed in the trail office, the staff complaints about: *fatigue was reduced by 30% *dry throats were reduced by 30% *headaches were reduced by 25% *coughing was decreased by 40% *skin irritations were reduced by 25% So go out and buy a beautiful fern, a prayer plant, or a begonia today and feel better in your office!
