Official Publication of Estates of Russell Creek Homeowners Association

President’s Letter Hi, Neighbors. Fall has officially arrived and before you know it, the holidays will be here and gone. I hope everyone enjoyed the Fall Festival and the Halloween Costume Parade. We definitely appreciate the volunteers who stepped forward and helped make these events happen. A big thanks goes out to Dave and Lisa Oldani for initiating and organizing these events as well. This brings me to a very sensitive subject, volunteering. We didn’t have someone step forward and organize pool parties for us this year. We almost didn’t have anyone step forward to organize the Fall Festival. We still have open committee positions within the HOA. We need volunteers to organize the events that we all enjoy so much. We need volunteers to run the HOA so that ERC is maintained as a great place to live. So what’s the problem? Why don’t we have all of our volunteer positions filled? Well, from what I have been told, we have persons in the neighborhood who criticize how volunteers decide to organize and run the events. Every volunteer from the past tells me that they loved helping the neighborhood, but quit because some residents complained and were unappreciative. Most times the complaints are about trite things. For example: Why is the Fall Festival on one weekend and the Halloween parade on another? While this comment may sound Copyright © 2007 Peel, Inc.

Welcome New Neighbors!!!

like nothing big, it can be very upsetting to the person who has spent hours working very hard to put on a great event. And, did you ever stop to think about that maybe it has to do with having too few volunteers? Everyone has their own idea of how things should be done. If you think there is a better way to organize and hold events around the neighborhood, you need to first be supportive of the current event, and then after the event is over, offer ideas on how to improve the next event. You should also offer to help organize or at least volunteer to work these events as well. We all want the community activities of ERC to be great. So let’s work on being more supportive of those who graciously offer to organize the activities that we all enjoy so much. On another note, we have had some residents who have chosen to rent or lease their homes to tenants. I have been asked what can be done with a neighbor who rents their property out to tenants that are horrible neighbors. Well, the first thing one should do is to call CMA with any concerns about the up keep and maintenance of the home. Dan at CMA is there to make sure the HOA knows when there is a problem. We can make sure that the home is kept up and maintained as is required by all homes in ERC. We can fine members of the HOA, contact the city, or take legal action. This applies to any cars, trailers, boats, etc. that are inappropriately (Continued on page 2)

President's Letter - (Continued from cover page) stored around the house. Renters are held to the same standards as anyone else in ERC. As far as poor behavior, please call the police. If the tenant throws wild parties all the time or does things that are not acceptable in public, they need to be reported to the police. I’m not saying you should call the police every time someone in the neighborhood throws a party. We have several neighbors who throw big parties once a year around the holidays. They will run late and will be a little louder than we like, but let’s be supportive of each other on issues like this. We all want ERC to be a place that we love to live in. Having said that, we need to understand that continued excessive poor public behavior is not acceptable. If you are aware of any problem of continued excessive poor public behavior, again, please call the police. It is the right thing to do for our community.

So What Are You Thankful For?

Thanksgiving. The one day out of the year that we set aside to ponder what it is that we are most grateful for and appreciate the most. So what is it that we should most appreciate in our lives? Is it our families? Our health? The beautiful neighborhood that we live in? Certainly all of these are things that we should be thankful for, as they bring us great joy and happiness. However, shouldn’t we also be thankful for the things that undermine and frustrate us? That bully at school, the car breaking down or the lost homework? I have found that when things are going great, there will always be an event or person that will try to steal your joy. Certain people and situations are put into our lives for a reason. If life was made easy, we would never develop the attributes of strength, patience and perseverance. There are even certain people in the ERC who challenge us with their rude or unruly behavior and negativity. How should we react to such people and circumstances? Should we let such people and things bother us, or welcome them with open arms? I like to look at life experiences as a blank sheet of paper. It is up to you to decide if you want to fill your blank paper with a positive reaction or a negative one. One of my favorite Christmas stories is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Grinch tried his hardest to steal the joy out of Whoville, but he was unsuccessful because the residents of Whoville still found something to be thankful for when all of their possessions were taken away. So for all of you Grinches in the ERC who criticize, vandalize and show a lack of respect to your fellow neighbor, thank you for pointing out to the rest of us that your behavior is due to your lack of self-esteem and self-respect and not due to the naieveness of others. So as you say grace before your Thanksgiving meal, say a special thank you for your own personal Grinches and events in your life that you grew from. And remember, the only way someone can make you become a Grinch is if you give your power to them. Just thank them for the lesson and keep your integrity, which is yet another thing that you can be thankful for.

Join the ERC Welcome Wagon!

For those of you who have not lived in the ERC from its inception, do you remember how it felt to move into the neighborhood without knowing a soul? It was such a blessing to for me to have caring and welcoming neighbors on my block that made the transition of my family’s move into the neighborhood three years ago a swift and easy one. There are however some instances where people move in and do not have the luxury of welcoming neighbors. That is why I have decided to form the ERC Welcoming Wagon. The wagon will consist of any caring neighbor who would like to take the initiative of calling a new resident to welcome them to our community. It would be a great way to get to know the new members of the ERC and to share with them all the facts about the schools, amenities and events of our neighborhood. If you would like to join the Welcome Wagon, please email your contact information to me at erc.editor@ yahoo.com. New resident information will be given to members on a rotating basis, so this will not take up much of your time at all. Thank you for wanting to be a blessing to a new resident!

Estates of Russell Creek Raising Confident Kids

It takes confidence to be a kid. Whether going to a new school or stepping up to bat for the first time, kids face a lot of uncharted territory. Naturally, parents want to instill a cando attitude in their kids so that they’ll bravely takes on new challenges and, over time, believe in themselves. While each child is a little different, parents can follow some general guidelines to build kids’ confidence. Self-confidence rises out of a sense of competence. In other words, kids develop confidence not because parents tell them they’re great, but because of their achievements, big and small. Sure, it’s good

to hear encouraging words from mom and dad. But words of praise mean more when they refer to a child’s specific efforts or new abilities. When kids achieve something, whether it’s brushing their own teeth or riding a bike, they get a sense of themselves as able and capable, and tap into that high-octane fuel of confidence. Building self-confidence can begin very early. When babies learn to turn the pages of a book or toddlers learn to walk, they are getting the idea “I can do it!” With each new skill and milestone, kids can develop increasing confidence. Parents can help by giving kids lots of opportunities to practice and master their skills, letting kids make mistakes and being there to boost their spirits so they keep trying. Respond with interest and excitement when kids show off a new skill, and reward them with praise when they achieve a goal or make a good effort. With plentiful opportunities, good instruction, and lots of patience from parents, kids can master basic skills — like tying their shoes and making the bed. Then, when other important challenges present themselves, kids can approach them knowing that they have already been successful in other areas. Stay on the Sidelines Of course, supervision is important to ensure that kids stay safe. But to help them really learn a new skill, it’s also important not to hover. Give kids the opportunity to try something new, make mistakes, and learn from them. For instance, if your son wants to learn how to make a peanut butter sandwich, demonstrate, set up the ingredients, and let him give it a try. Will he make a bit of a mess? Almost certainly. But don’t swoop in the second some jelly hits the countertop. In fact, avoid any criticism that could discourage him from trying again. If you step in to finish the sandwich, your son will think, “Oh well, I guess I can’t make sandwiches.” But if you have patience for the mess and the time it takes to learn, the payoff will be real. Someday soon he’ll be able to say, “I’m hungry for lunch, so I’m going to make my own sandwich.” You might even reply, “Great, can you make me one, too?” What a clear sign of your faith in his abilities!

Offer Encouragement and Praise Sometimes, it won’t be you swooping in when your child falters, but your child giving up. Help by encouraging persistence in the midst of frustration. By trying again, kids learn that obstacles can be overcome. Once kids reach a goal, you’ll want to praise not only the end result but also their willingness to stick with it. For instance, after your son has mastered making that peanut butter sandwich you might show your confidence by saying, “Next time, want to learn how to crack an egg?” Sandwich-fixing and egg-cracking might not seem like huge achievements, but they’re important steps in the right direction — toward your child’s independence. Throughout childhood, parents have chances to prepare kids to take care of themselves. Sure, it’s great to feel needed, but as kids steadily gain confidence and independence, their relationship with you can be even richer. You can be bonded, not just by dependence, but by love and shared pride in all they’ve achieved. Eventually, your grown-up kids just might say thanks for how prepared they feel for the road ahead — a road they can take with confidence. Reviewed by: D’Arcy Lyness, PhD Date reviewed: January 2007
