PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Hello ERC Neighbors & Happy Summer!

Are we one or two? I have a question for you: Are we one or two? Don’t really understand the question? Well then, let me phrase it in a way that you have probably heard it put before: Are we one ERC community or two separate halves of a community? On numerous occasions, I have heard our residents refer to the ERC as either “this side” of the neighborhood or “that side”, or the “old part” and the “new part”, and even the “Kimbrough side” or the “Bonita side”. Rest assured that we are one ERC community and that your volunteer board members and I are concerned about the welfare of our entire community – “our” community. We do not think of the ERC as two separate communities, but one great neighborhood! For those of you that may think this way, then consider this. It was the entire community’s contributed funds that were utilized to renovate the Kimbrough pool building and area. Additionally, it was the entire community’s funds that were used to make improvements to the Bonita pool, park and playground area. See the point? We all contribute to the ERC. We are one Estates of Russell Creek. We are one community and should always think of ourselves as one community. I once was told by someone that in order to change you first must change the way you think, so that you can change the way you feel, so you can change the way you act. If you have historically thought of the ERC as two halves, then let me ask you one more question: Can you change? Destruction of Community Assets Unfortunately, there is an ongoing and increasing problem of children using the pool furniture to construct play areas, makeshift jungle gyms and make-believe fortresses on the pool deck. The photo included is a small illustration of this activity. This is extremely abusive to the pool furniture and causes considerable damage. Additionally, it is unsafe for (Continued on page 2)

President's Letter - (Continued from Cover) children to be doing this. The ERC HOA spent over $1,100 at the end of the 2007 pool season to have broken pool furniture welded and repaired. Sadly, due to the continued abuse of the pool furniture, this previous repair work will need to be redone and additional repairs made to other pieces of newly damaged furniture. Let’s not waste our HOA funds. Please use the pool chairs, tables and chaise lounges as intended... for sitting, dining and lounging only! Ask yourself, would you let your children treat your own personal pool furniture in this manner if it was at your pool located in your back yard? If you answered yes to this question, then please do the rest of your community a favor and stay at home. For those that answered no, please instruct and remind your children to respect the pool furniture and all other common community assets. This would be greatly appreciated by all your fellow members of your ERC HOA community. Everyone please have an enjoyable summer and safe travels to wherever you may be journeying for vacations. I hope to get the opportunity to see all of you around the ERC this summer enjoying your neighborhood and all its amenities. I especially hope to see many of you at our Adult Pool Party on June 20th from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at the Bonita Pool. The party coordinator, Roger Smith, promised me it was going to be a great time! All the best, Dave Oldani President Estates of Russell Creek HOA

Estates of Russell Creek Letters to the Editor Alleyway not Raceway I’m very concerned about residents speeding in our neighborhood alleyways. In the past two month I’ve witnessed two near-miss accidents—both from my back porch! On a daily basis, I see residents driving very fast down the alley behind my home, especially in the early morning and evening when many of us are going to or coming from work. Please remember that our alleys have limited visibility and limited space. Many people back into alleys going to work, and kids often use these alleys when walking to school. Alleys are not a place for speeding. Let’s all please slow down! Lindsey Clark, Stockport Drive

Estates of Russell Creek Architecturally Sound by Mike Casole

As the weather warms and the grass greens, most of us have begun watering our lawns. In fact, I have noticed quite a few irrigation systems in our neighborhood watering every day. According to the experts, this time of year our lawns require a minimum of watering as we are experiencing limited heat and an abundance of rain. If you are watering more than a couple of times a week, you are wasting money and a great natural resource. Several homeowners inquired about trees that do well in North Texas. According to Texas A&M University, the best medium trees for us are the Texas Red Oak, Lacebark Elm, Texas Walnut and the Goldenraintree. Their recommendations for large trees are the Bur Oak, Cedar Elm and the Chinkapin Oak. On to another subject, if you have had a great experience with a service provider or home appliance repair company, be sure to visit the referral section of The Estates of Russell Creek web site and make a recommendation. This section of the web site is a valuable resource for all homeowners looking for a trusted repair company. As always, call with questions or comments.

WEEDS 101 by Neil Sperry

Question: There are so many types of weed killers. How can I choose the correct one? Answer: To choose the correct herbicide you need to answer three pairs of questions. • Is the weed an annual or perennial? • Is the weed a grass, or is it a non-grass (broad-leafed) weed? • Does the weed do most of its growing in the cool months or during the warm months? If you can answer those three pairs of questions, you and your nurserymen will be able to choose the most appropriate weed killer. Pre-emergent weed killers, for example, will control annual weeds so long as you apply them before the weed seeds start to sprout. Early spring and early summer applications will prevent the warm-season annual weeds. Early fall applications will prevent the cool-season types. There are types for both grassy and broad-leafed weeds. On the same line, there are post-emergent weed killers for both grassy and broad-leafed weed killers. Your nurseryman can steer you in the right direction. Total-kill herbicides eliminate all vegetation, and there are specific weed killers for nut sedge as well.
