Why is this a special day?

12 13 14 15 16 17 18 It is the Sabbath 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 day 26 27 28 29 30 31

Since the beginning of the world, one day each week has been set apart for learning and thinking about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and for doing good to others.

This day is called the Sabbath.

What day of the week is the Sabbath day?

Let’s Read Exodus 20:8

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. (Old Testament | Exodus 20:8)

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

Keeping the Sabbath day holy means we do things that remind us of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, such as going to church, reading the scriptures, and doing other reverent things.

What kinds of activities would be appropriate for the Sabbath?

What things have you done today to keep the Sabbath day Holy?

We can help keep the Sabbath day Holy by . . .

These are just some of the things we can do to keep the Sabbath day Holy.

We should not work on Sunday, if possible, and we should not do things that keep us from thinking about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

It’s time for the

Game

I’m going to describe some activities you might participate in.

If the activity is something we should do on the Sabbath . . . Smile

If the activity is not something we should do on the Sabbath . . . Frown.

If you are ready . . . Let’s play.

Going to church.

Cleaning the house.

Visiting relatives

Going Shopping

Going to a movie

Reading the scriptures or other good books

Praying

Watching or participating in a game of sports

Writing letters

Going for a walk

Playing Scripture Games

Visiting a sick person

Going to Primary

It is not always easy to know whether an activity is something we should do on the Sabbath.

The best way to know what to do is to follow Jesus Christ’s example.

Let’s hear the story of when Jesus healed a man with a withered hand. (Handicapped Hand)

This story is found in Matthew 12: 10-13

Read It

Watch it

The Pharisees were people who didn’t like Jesus Christ and what he did.

They tried to trap him into saying things that were wrong or against the law.

They asked him if it was wrong to heal someone on the Sabbath day.

They wanted him to say it was.

If an activity is something that Jesus would do, such as helping or being kind to others, it is a good thing to do on the Sabbath day.

To keep the Sabbath day holy, we need to do certain things before the Sabbath in order to be prepared.

What things do you and your family need to do to be ready for the Sabbath?

When should you do these things?

Saturday Saturday is a special day. It’s the day we get ready for Sunday: We clean the house, and we shop at the store, So we won’t have to work until Monday. We brush our clothes, and we shine our shoes, And we call it our get-the-work-done day. Then we trim our nails, and we shampoo our hair, So we can be ready for Sunday!

I want to encourage you to prepare next week so they will be ready to keep the Sabbath day holy.

Here is a copy of the “Sabbath day activity sheet”

I will read a sentence describing appropriate Sabbath Activities.

Your job is to find the picture that shows that activity.

Matthew 12:10 - 13 10 ¶ And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. 11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

Matthew 12:10 - 13 12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. 13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.
