*LITANY One: All: One: All: One: All:

Richard Gray When Jesus ascended to the right hand of God, a new world broke into ours. A world marked by freedom and justice and peace. When Jesus ascended to the right hand of God, he formed a new community. A welcoming community that loves and cares for all of God’s children. When Jesus ascended to the right hand of God, a new creation began. All that was distorted is being restored, all that is corrupted is being renewed, all that was broken is being made whole. One: Jesus has ascended and God’s new world has begun. Let us pray…

*UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, on this Sunday when we recognize Jesus’ ascension, we give thanks for the years Jesus spent among us. We give thanks for the grace and truth we received through his loving presence. This morning we confess that all too often we have our eyes set in the clouds instead of on the earth You have given us. We desire the things of heaven - peace and rest, love and belonging, security and trust - and yet fail to work toward them. Forgive us for our short sightedness. Draw us back to Jesus’ down-to-earth message of Your love. Amen. *WORDS OF ASSURANCE

ATTENDING TO GOD’S WORD ANTIPHONAL READING FROM THE PSALTER

Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation

Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon. Psalm 97

Andrew R. Galuska

Cantor and Congregation One: The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! 2 Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 3 Fire goes before him, and consumes his adversaries on every side. 4 His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. Cantor and Congregation One: 6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness; and all the peoples behold his glory. 7 All worshipers of images are put to shame, those who make their boast in worthless idols; all gods bow down before him. 8 Zion hears and is glad, and the towns of Judah rejoice, because of your judgments, O God. 9 For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. Cantor and Congregation One: 10 The LORD loves those who hate evil; he guards the lives of his faithful; he rescues them from the hand of the wicked. 11 Light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. 12 Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name! Cantor and Congregation RESPONSE One: May God who commanded light to shine out of darkness enlighten our way today. All: Amen. 3

LESSON OF THE DAY

Elaine A. Matthes

One: Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. All: May your Word be proclaimed and received here today. Acts 1:6-14 So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9 When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11 They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." 6

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey away. 13 When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers. 12

RESPONSE One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Thanks be to God!

*HYMN OF DEVOTION

SERMON

“Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart!”

“When are We Going to Be There?” Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom…? Acts 1:6b

ANTHEM

“Come Away to the Skies” Peter Crisafulli

Chancel Choir

Come away to the skies, my beloved, arise And rejoice in the day thou wast born; On this festival day, come exulting away, And with singing to Zion return. Now with singing and praise, let us spend all the days, By our heavenly Father bestowed, While his grace we receive from his bounty, and live to the honor and glory of God. For the glory we were first created to share, Both the nature and kingdom divine! Now created again that our souls may remain, Throughout time and eternity thine. We with thanks do approve the design of that love Which hath joined us to Jesus’ name: So united in heart, let us nevermore part, Till we meet at the feast of the Lamb. Hallelujah we sing, to our Father and King, And his rapturous praises, repeat: To the Lamb that was slain, hallelujah again, Sing all heaven and fall at his feet.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING On Communion Sundays we invite you to put a small offering in the “Deacon’s Fund” envelope (found in the pew racks) and place in the offering plate. The Deacon’s Fund serves our members who face emergency needs.

UNISON CALL TO OFFERING Richard Gray Holy God, we offer these gifts, not in order to purchase our way out of this world, but rather to transform this world so that it more nearly resembles your kingdom. May our offerings bring peace and joy and hope to our world. Amen. OFFERTORY
