Sunday of the Resurrection: Easter Day

April 1, 2018 9:00 & 11:15 a.m.

Saint George’s Episcopal Church Arlington, Virginia

Welcome to Saint George’s

Saint George's is a vibrant, inclusive, multi-faceted faith community. We welcome everyone- no exceptionsbecause we believe that inclusion is a Gospel value. Life in the 21st century can be very isolating. But as the great Anglican theologian John Donne so famously said, "No man is an island unto himself." We are meant to be in relationship- with God, with each other and with our deepest and truest selves. As Christians, we believe that Jesus showed us what that looks like. So whoever you are and wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we hope that you will join us as we follow Jesus in community, loving God, serving others and changing the world.

Interested in learning more? Fill this out and return to an usher or place in the collection plate and we will be in touch soon. Please write as legibly as possible.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Lesson

Isaiah 25:6-9

Lector: A reading from the Prophet Isaiah. On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. Lector: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 Choir first, then all sing the antiphon indicated.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his mercy endures for ever. Let Israel now proclaim, "His mercy endures for ever." The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. There is a sound of exultation and victory in the tents of the righteous: "The right hand of the LORD has triumphed! the right hand of the LORD is exalted! the right hand of the LORD has triumphed!" I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. Antiphon The LORD has punished me sorely, but he did not hand me over to death. Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the LORD. "This is the gate of the LORD; he who is righteous may enter." I will give thanks to you, for you answered me and have become my salvation. The same stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the LORD'S doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. On this day the LORD has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Antiphon

The Second Lesson

Acts 10:34-43

Lector: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Peter began to speak to Cornelius and the other Gentiles: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Lector: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Celebrant: People:

John 20:1-18

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Celebrant: People:

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Christ.

The Sermon A brief period of silence

The Rev. Shearon Sykes Williams

The Nicene Creed

BCP p.358

The people stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

7

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People

written by Elliot Branch

On this Sunday of the Resurrection, we offer prayers of gratitude for the gift of your Son, whose perfect sacrifice triumphed over sin and death. In the newness of life, we pray that each of us may be one of your gifts to the Church and the world. For all nations and all peoples of the world: that may we grow in our tolerance and understanding of each other so that we may come to dwell in Christ as He dwells in us. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer. For the ministry of the Body of Christ, ordained and lay: that we may spread the good news of the Resurrection through our faith and through our lives. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer. For the earth and all of its creatures: that we may treasure them as you treasure the whole of your creation. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer. For the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and all who struggle to give voice to their needs and to obtain justice: may we see Christ in them as He sees himself in us. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer. For those who are in need of healing – physical, spiritual, or emotional, especially […]: that they may experience the healing power of the Resurrection. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer. For those who have entered into your eternal rest, especially […]: that they may receive a full measure of your triumph over sin and death. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer. Celebrant: Almighty God, you know what we desire before we ask and you always provide what we need. Answer these prayers and the prayers of our hearts as may be best for us and for your creation, and always to the glory of your Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Confession of Sin may be omitted during the Great Fifty Days of Easter.

The Great Thanksgiving (Eucharistic Prayer D)

BCP p.372

The following is sung

Celebrant continues:

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing,

9

Celebrant and People:

Celebrant continues:

We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power… Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. Celebrant and People:

We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. Celebrant continues:

Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts… Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

BCP p.364

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

10

The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Then may be sung or said:

Cantor: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast.

Celebrant continues:

The gifts of God for the people of God. Music at the Communion The Bread and Wine are distributed to the communicants. Communion may be received around the Altar platform. Gluten-free wafers and chalice are available; please make your need known to the priest. If you do not wish to receive communion, please come forward with arms crossed to receive a blessing.

Let us pray.

People: Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing May Almighty God, who has redeemed us and made us his children through the resurrection of his Son our Lord, bestow upon you the riches of his blessing. Amen. May God, who through the water of baptism has raised us from sin into newness of life, make you holy and worthy to be united with Christ for ever. Amen. UPCOMING EVENTS Easter Office Closure. The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, April 2 and Tuesday, April 3, in observance of Easter. We will re-open on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. St. George’s Men’s Group will meet at 8:00 AM Saturday April 7th in the Rhodes Room at church. A light breakfast of bagels, donuts, muffins and Starbuck’s coffee will be served starting at 8:00 AM. Our discussion topic will be: Parenting: Raising Respectful Children. In a world that is increasingly disrespectful, teaching children to honor others and treat them with care and courtesy can be a challenging task, yet vitally important. What do our own actions and priorities communicate? Are we modeling and mentoring desired behaviors? How wide is our own “circle of concern”? How do we manage destructive feelings? What does our Christian faith have to offer? In addition to discussing those questions, we hope to talk about strategies to enhance the life-long development of our children, or those with whom we interact, into moral and caring individuals. We hope that you will join us! If you have questions now, or if you have trouble getting in the front door of the church on the day of the meeting, call John Churchman on his cell phone at 703300-6574 or Robbie Williams at 703-864-8955 20s and 30s Nontrivial Pursuit, continues April 8th. Our Nontrivial Pursuits monthly gather will continue April 8thplease fill out newcomer info on page 2 and give it to an usher for more information and to get connected! Holy Hour: Evensong & Happy Hour, Tuesday, April 17, 2018, 6:00 PM, Nave. Come join us on the Third Tuesday of each month for Holy Hour. Holy Hour combines the beauty and holiness of the Choral Evensong, with the fellowship and conversation of a happy hour. More at www.saintgeorgesmusoc.org Saint George's Refugee Ministry & NOVA Friend of Refugees. The Saint George's Refugee Ministry is an award winning program that started in the Summer of 2016 to build a coalition of like-minded individuals to support and advocate for refugees. A national grassroots coalition called NOVA Friends of Refugees was born out of our ministry. Co-founded by two long-time Saint Georgians, Norma Kacen and Wendy Chan, this interfaith network now has over 650+ members (and growing!) from across the country, representing over 130 faith communities, NGOs, and gov't agencies, connected to support and share information to help refugees. A key part of the coalition's work is to organize community events to encourage interaction and build understanding between refugees and the American general public so to change the negative public narrative on refugees and immigrants. As part of this effort, NOVA FOR is organizing a large scale event called the One Journey Festival in June in preparation for the World Refugee Day. One Journey Festival: The One Journey Festival is a national event that celebrates refugee talents, stories, and contributions to shine a light on the resilience of the human spirit reflected at every stage of their journey. This all-day, free festival will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Washington National Cathedral. It will connect participants through the shared languages of humanity: food, art, music and dance from the countries that today’s refugees originally called home. Celebrities such as Chef Jose Andres and actor/model Ger Duany will perform with refugee chefs, musicians, and artists. The festival will use Shared Studios' innovative immersive video experience to connect attendees with refugees living in overseas camps. We expect over 3,000 participants to attend this festival. For more information about the event, please visit www.onejourneyfestival.com . You can RSVP your free festival tickets here and sign up to volunteer here. We are always looking for sponsors and partners for this festival and would appreciate you spreading the word about this festival to your network. Follow and like us on Facebook , Instagram and Twitter and feel free to share our posts! Questions? Contact Wendy Chan [email protected].
