SARTELL CONNECTIONS Volume 2 Number 2

January / February 2012 When should I get involved? The time is now, begin 2012 with a resolution to yourself to try out a new activity or a new event with new acquaintances. I consider my experiences with SSC a gift I give myself.

JAN’S JOTTINGS Too Good to be True? Many of you receive the Sartell Connections newsletter either in the mail or by email and wonder how you can be involved in the Sartell Senior Connection (SSC) and its events.

Jan Sorell

It is simple, just come. We do not check your ID at the door. You do not have to live in Sartell, you do not have to be a senior. Just come. You do not have to know someone. One of the nice features of living in Sartell is that it has grown so rapidly that approximately half of the people who come to SSC events moved here from someplace else and did not know anyone when they came for the first time. This is a marvelous place to meet people and to make new friends. I happen to be one of the old timers, as of January 1, I will have lived in Sartell for 50 years AND when I got involved with SSC, I came by myself, there were only two people that I knew. Everyone was welcoming and friendly, now I have many special new friends. As you will see in this newsletter, the programs and events are interesting, entertaining, educational and more. All of these events and activities have been suggested by someone and most organized by volunteers. Is there an activity in which you would like to be involved that is not listed? Do you know of a speaker or program that you would like to see offered? Let us know. My contact information and that of SSC Board members is located on the last page of this newsletter. What are the costs? At this time, there are no costs for most activities. The few events for which there is a charge use the fee for prizes or are offered by Community Education where an instructor is hired.

They say that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. With the Sartell Senior Connection, that statement is absolutely false. Try us out. Happy New Year!

COMMUNITY EDUCATION SARTELL SENIOR CONNECTION SEEKS BOARD MEMBERS! Ann Doyscher-Domres

These are very exciting times to be involved in Sartell Senior Connection! There are many changes happening with the move to a new larger space at the District Office. (See Dr. Hill’s article on page2). We also have had some changes in our SSC Board and that is where you come in. Would you like to be more involved with the changes happening with the Senior Connection? The board is looking for new members to serve at this time. The board helps shape the direction the Sartell Senior Connection is going now and into the future with programming ideas and financial decisions. The board meets once a month and takes the summer off from meetings. The board is comprised of seniors from the area and resource people from Community Education, Country Manor Campus and the City of Sartell. If you’re interested in being involved or learning about the SSC Board, please stop by the Community Education office at 212 3rd Ave N or talk to one of the current board members. (The list of Board Members can be found on the newsletter cover page).

THOUGHTS FROM DR. JOE HILL Superintendent, Sartell-St. Stephen Public Schools

New space means new opportunities. With the passage of the bond referendum in November, the district is excited to repurpose space in the current district offices. As we are fortunate to have increasing enrollment in our district, this can also provide the challenge of space issues. The District Office will be shifting space around to accommodate for the Early Childhood program to be served in the District Office building. There will also be space for the current district offices, Community Education, and community space, which includes an increase in space for the Sartell Senior Connection. The current Sartell Senior Connection room will be converted back to a classroom for our earliest learners in the fall. Senior Connection will be moving from the “West Wing” to the “East Wing” multi-purpose area consisting of approximately 6000 square feet this summer. This will allow for expanded initiatives for senior and community programming and gatherings. The new area comes complete with a kitchen, cafeteria and gymnasium. For those wanting a sneak preview of the design of the new District Service Center, please see Ann Doyscher-Domres in the Community Education office. PLEASE NOTE: The Sartell Middle School will also be open on regular school days from 5-9pm for walking as the weather changes.

OUR LIBRARY Our library is loaded with about 2000 books. A great selection of fiction, non-fiction, mysteries, romance and classics, all donated by people in our community. Thank you to you all for your donations. I, for one, am enjoying them greatly. All are welcome to browse, borrow and return any of the books. A classic I read recently is "My Cousin Rachael" by Daphney De Nemours. This was first published in 1938 and is still being reprinted. What a captivating story with strong characters. I highly recommend it. A book I have revisited is "The Horse Whisperer." This means that a good book does not have to be a recent publication to be The Horse Whisperer a good read. Recently we received a large collection (thank you to the giver) of Westerns by Louis L'Amour. These short stories were written in the 1970's to the present and cover a broad spectrum of scenarios. The library is in room 113 at the District Office. It is open during office hours for the district. By Muriel, Librarian

SARTELL CONNECTIONS Volume 2 Number 2

THE BENEFITS OF BELONGING By Don and Millie Moran These past four years we have been transitioning through a phase of having to accept that the children we once had, have out grown us. The Sartell Senior Connection has served us as a positive companion through the process. Keeping up with children and grandchildren is no longer feasible. Our involvement in Sartell Senior Connection has allowed us to share our gifts as presenters for Thursday’s Coffee and Conversation, Second Tuesdays, and Community Education classes. The organization also has been open to us recruiting presenters we’ve known from our decades of being involved in the larger community. Sartell Senior Connection welcoming the gifts we have to offer has given us a renewed sense of value and belonging. We no longer feel an urgency to move nearer to our children and leave all that we have in Sartell and St. Cloud behind. An added bonus has been that by hanging out with people our age, who offer a magnitude of awareness of the greater world, we sense that what we think and feel in the diminishment process is normal and acceptable.

Q: HAVE YOU HEARD OF SALT THAT’S GOOD FOR YOU? A: I’m sure your doctor has told you to use SALT in moderation because of the health risks related to excessive use. Fortunately for you there is a SALT that can improve your quality of life. S.A.L.T. (Seniors And Law enforcement Together) has been meeting for over 15 years, addressing the public safety needs of seniors in the Sartell community. Many public safety issues that our senior population experience are different than those of younger persons within the community. Law enforcement in Sartell realized those differences and works diligently to have a better understanding and working relationship with seniors. Some of the projects that have been spurred from SALT include: increased lighting near Perkins; Metro Bus Service; lighted crosswalk near Country Manor; Senior Document Shred Day; Cookout with Cops; and weekly gathering of seniors at Coffee & Conversation. Sartell’s Police Chief, Jim Hughes chairs the S.A.L.T. meetings, taking action on requests and providing updates to current crime trends. The Chief also speaks on activities occurring within the city, as well as providing information to the city council. Make a difference in your life and the lives of other seniors and please join the SALT committee at one of the regularly scheduled meetings. They occur the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 9:00 am to 10:00 am in the police department training room.

Thank you Sartell Senior Connection!

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Police Chief Jim Hughes at 320.251.8186.

FLY IN For four months, starting January on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:00 P.M., the Granite City Radio Control Club will be holding its meetings at the Sartell Senior Connection Center. After a short meeting, members will move to the gym to fly their miniature electric aircraft within the space limitations. The science of this hobby makes this feat possible due to advances that have occurred in recent years. First, lithium rechargeable batteries are small enough yet still capable of storing great amounts of electricity to power motors for run times of 10 to 15 minutes.. Aircraft are made of lightweight materials such as foam and weigh only a few ounces. Electronic controls that allow rapid movement of control surfaces have also become miniature. A second advancement is that electronic signals that connect a hand held controller with the aircraft use secure communication which would have been a top military secret a few years ago. Club members must belong to the Aeronautical Modeling Association which provides a monthly magazine, insurance, and representation with the Federal Communication Commission. Sadly, the hobby may not have the freedom it has known in the past. A citizen, Maynard Hill, demonstrated that he could create a remotely piloted aircraft and fly it from the U.S. to Ireland along the path of Lindberg using available GPS equipment. Homeland Defense is aware of what this technology can do in the hands of the wrong people. Readers are welcome to join us during the flying period. Jim Wasdyke

DURING FEBRUARY . . . LOVE IS IN THE AIR HOW WE MET . . . I met Tom at our company picnic. I was dressed as a clown and he was involved with other stuff. At the end of the day, after I had returned to regular clothing, he joined our group and gave me a foot rub. Very nicely done. I then invited anyone that wanted to, to come to my home. Tom was the only one that arrived; we went out to eat. We married a year later and ate together for 30 years after that. By Muriel Jensen Recently we received one of those "Remember When" emails; listed was: "Remember when Peyton Place was porn?" A few weeks ago we finished our first date; curled up in our adjustable Tempurapedic bed, watching Netflix's 1957's Peyton Place. Fifty three years

January / February 2012 earlier, Don, who was home on vacation from California, stopped at the hospital where I worked and invited me to a movie, we had met at a wedding dance a few days earlier though didn't even know each other's last names. I agreed, though half way into the movie, I told him I was uncomfortable with the content and could we please leave, assuming that would be the end of our dating. I wanted to move beyond Browerville so badly. He asked me out on another date and here we are. By Millie Moran Rockhurst College in Kansas City held singles night once a month. It was one of the few places in town where my friends and I could meet other young adults.{Shirley}.It was the free beer. {Jim} Wasdyke's

Hi from Sunny Arizona. Betty and I met on the Internet twelve years ago, back when it was pretty much experimental and raised a few eyebrows. We are both recycled Seniors (widowed and remarried). Kindest, Ray Husen Well.........we attended the same HS and both “needed” a Prom date – and the rest is history – as they say. Dave & JoAnn Olson We met as sophomores in the same class in Pierz High School. I asked Dennis to the Sadie Hawkins dance and we dated until we parted at graduation. Dennis went to National Guard training at Fort Leonardwood Missouri and I went to St. Scholastica's College in Duluth. I missed Dennis and my college girl friend convinced me to write to him. Two years later we were married! Dennis and Gerri Boser

January / February 2012 -Lynne O'Neill Willey

We met on a blind date which I had never gone on one before and was a little wary about how this might go.. We went to the fair in Little Falls and the rest is history.. Mike lived in Sauk Rapids and I in Little Falls. We dated for three years only on weekends and on a tight college student's budget of $5.00 a date. Because of our severe lack of funds, Mike actually tried to pass me off at student prices at the movies until Mike graduated and started working as a probation Officer in Foley....Thank goodness for me, the date budget increased substantially. A funny thing has happened now that we are Seniors, we are back looking for the buy one get one free and the Senior discount ! Mary and Mike Gilbert

In the fall of my senior year in high school, I worked at a small neighborhood dairy store (think today's convenience store without gas pumps). A tall blond good looking guy came in regularly to buy cigarettes. He would always wink at me and my heart would flutter, eventually he asked to take me home from work . . . and the rest as they say is history. Jan Sorell Jim and I have known each other so long. We played kids games (hide 'n seek, tin can knock off, fox 'n goose etc.) He lived on the farm next to where the boat landing is now. I lived 1/2 block from where we now reside. Not much adventure for us. Arlene Mendel I met my wonderful husband of two and one half years on a bus trip tour to the Canadian Rockies. It wasn't in either of our plans, but by the end of the ten day trip, we had fallen in love.

I met my wife at a New Year's Eve dance and we have danced for 59 years. Virgil Dreyer

I met my husband on a blind date. After we met we found out that we only lived three blocks away. Audrey Peterson

I picked up my wife at the Race Track.--Canterbury Downs. She asked "anybody sitting here" ? I replied "you are". We were friends for several years before we started dating. Pat and Nancy Casey

It was May 1997, I was a new banker at then Norwest Bank in Sioux Falls SD. Wade had just moved into the apartments next to the bank and came in to open his accounts. He wasn’t thrilled with me when I told him he’d have to close his account in Minnesota and open a new one in South Dakota because of the banking laws at the time prevented me from moving his account. It ended up taking a couple of appointments to complete all the transactions. He tells of how he went back to his apartment and thought to himself, “She’s new to town you should ask her out.” I asked the tellers, “What’s the policy on dating customers?” after our first appointment. He came back to the bank and asked me out a few weeks later. Our first date was for dinner at Timberlodge on June 24, 1997. The policy on dating customers was I could no longer be his banker. A good trade off! Ann Doyscher-Domres
