PONTORMO AND ROSSO: DIVERGING PATHS OF MANNERISM Palazzo Strozzi is hosting a major exhibition devoted to the work of Pontormo and of Rosso Fiorentino, the two painters who were without question the most original and unconventional adepts of the new way of interpreting art in that season of the Italian Cinquecento which Giorgio Vasari called the 'modern manner'. Pontormo, always a favourite with the Medici, was a painter open to stylistic variety and to a renewal of the traditional approach to composition. Rosso Fiorentino, on the other hand, was more tightly bound to tradition, yet at the same time he was fully capable of flights of originality and innovation, influenced also by Cabalistic literature and esoteric works. BACCIO BANDINELLI: SCULPTOR AND MAESTRO (1493-1560) The Museo Nazionale is hosting the first monographic exhibition ever devoted to Florentine sculptor Baccio Bandinelli, an exhibition full of discoveries and surprises in its determination to restore Bandinelli at long last to the important place he occupies in the panorama of Italian Mannerist sculpture, and to re-establish the truth regarding an artist who was still very much admired in the 17th and 18th centuries but who has been unfairly ostracised by critics since then. ART AND POLITICS: THE ELECTRESS PALATINE AND THE FINAL SEASON OF MEDICI PATRONAGE IN SAN LORENZO There are many reasons for paying due tribute to the Electress Palatine, the last descendent of the Grand-ducal branch of the Medici dynasty. Indeed the last years of her life were intimately bound up with the present and future life of her State, for the safeguarding of which she drafted the “Family Pact”, the fundamental document that guaranteed the protection and conservation of the heritage of the Medici within their city and their State. The Museum of the Medici Chapels decided to illustrate to the public the results of the rehabilitation of the tomb as well as the restoration of part of the important collection of grave goods by organising this exhibition, centred in particular on the last years of life of the Electres

SAVE THE DATE! Exhibitions 16 - 27 FROM APRIL TILL JULY JACKSON POLLOCK – THE FIGURE OF FURE This unique exhibition wants to compare Jackson Pollock to Michelangelo, two artists apparently so distant but in thruth having many similarities. The show brings under scrutiny two distant, and yet, antithetical languages: one originates in drawing that with all of its strength attempts to respect the order of nature and of the divine, the other is based in the phenomenology of the unconscious and mystical geometry, the perfect representation of an expanding universe. What Michelangelo and Pollock shared was the inspired frenzy they both transmitted as they worked, a sort of agonistic trance that rendered them extraneous to the outer world. 20 – 25 FROM SEPTEMBER TILL JANUARY PICASSO AND THE SPANISH MODERNITY MASTERPIECIES FROM REINA SOFIA In the minds of all Picasso appears as the major reference for modern Western art. The exhibition aims to show Picasso’s output in its influence on Spanish art: in its reflections about art; its encounter with “pure art”; the emergence of the monster with a human face; in the artist's commitment to the historic tragedy; and in the metaphor of erotic desire as a privileged source of creation and vision of the world. In this exhibition will be also presented the poetics of artists such as Juan Gris, Miró, Dalí, Maria Blanchard, Julio González. FLORENCE, PALAZZO STROZZI www.palazzostrozzi.org

RIFICOLONA – FESTIVAL OF LANTERNS During this festival, the children of Florence carry papier-mâché lanterns, of various shapes and colors tied to the ends of sticks as they walk through the streets of the city. These lanterns are called rificolone. The origin of this festival is not known for sure but it legend tells that it could have begun in 1555 when the triumphant Florentine troops returned from Siena with lanterns tied onto the end of their pikes. Most probably though, is that the Festival began just before the celebration of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary celebrated every year on September 7th, when farmers and mountaineers came to the city to sell, buy, and trade at the annual Fall Market held in the Piazza of Saint Annunziata.
