Prima Materia Ubiquitous and graphic media images of war, protest, and social upheaval provided the backdrop for artistic breakthroughs of late 1960s, much of which was expressed in abstraction— sometimes emptiness. That era also opened new vistas on social equality and shared concerns, such as the condition and future of our environment. Today, science and technology offer social connectivity on a global scale, constantly available images of every kind, and the promise of technological solutions for longevity, and renewable energy. At the same time, we still live in an atmosphere of anxiety, often faced with invisible and abstract adversaries— among them, global warming and technological terrorism. We are immersed in a cacophony of media image and sound. Punta della Dogana

07 JUNE - 03 NOVEMBER Art or Sound Curated by Germano Celant, the exhibition Art or Sound analyzes the complex dialogue of the past and our present between art and sound, investigating also on iconic aspects of the musical instrument as well as on the role of the artist-musician. An artistic path from the XVI century until these days that presents more than 180 works: musical instruments, mechanic objects, arrangements, paintings, sculptures, installations and sound devices. Fondazione Prada

07 JUNE - 24 AUGUST IK 00 The spaces of confinement The artists in the exhibition reflect on spaces of constraint, confinement, and containment. The functional aspects of these spaces are beyond the visible; they are distanced both spatially and temporally from the fluid existence of those on the outside. However, these places of enclosure do not exist separately from the everyday. Their construction engenders a complex set of psychological patterns that connect to the human condition of all of us. The exhibition will take place on Giudecca island in Venice where a womens’ prison, an integral part of the local community’s life, is located in the immediate neighbourhood of the venue. Vogalonga This year reaches the prestigious target of 40 editions. Known as one of the most spectacular events of the Venetian season, the Vogalonga, on the calendar for Sunday 8 June, interprets the most genuine lagoon spirit. It is also the undisputed queen (with the Historic regatta) of all the rowing regattas, even though formally it differs substantially from them, due to its non competitive character. A purely decoubertinian spirit thus urges over two thousand participants to face a true 32 kilometre marathon through the incomparable scenario of the lagoon and its islands. It is thanks to them, in addition to the Cannaregio Canal and the entire Grand Canal and the Basin of St. Mark, where the departure kicks off, that it is possible to experience the emotions and the weariness of these rowers from all over the world. The departure will take place around 9am next to the Punta della Dogana with the classic cannon shot. Registration is open to everyone, until 5 June. Punta della Dogana

13-15 JUNE San Pellegrino Cooking Cup Ten young chefs from around the world will face off in the 14th annual S.Pellegrino Cooking Cup to be held in Venice on June 13th-15th. As in the past editions, 10 chefs will race, cooking their special dishes on board of different sailing boats racing across Venice’s magical lagoon. This unique event welcomes sailors, skippers, chefs and fine dining lovers from all over the world in a two days competition that awards the best performances several categories, both sailing and culinary.

THE EVENT IN VENICE!

19 JULY Festa del Redentore The Redentore is the oldest continuously celebrated date on the Venetian calendar. At the end of a plague epidemic in 1576, the city commissioned Andrea Palladio to build a church on the Giudecca – Il Redentore (the Redeemer). Every July, a pontoon bridge is built across the canal that separates the Giudecca from Venice proper, so people can make the pilgrimage to the church. But, while the religious part of the festival falls on Sunday, what makes this weekend so special are the festivities on Saturday night. Boats of every shape and size gather in the lagoon between St Mark’s, San Giorgio, the Punta della Dogana and the Giudecca, each holding merry-makers supplied with food and drink. This party culminates in an amazing fireworks display which you can watch as you dine at Belmond Hotel Cipriani. Bacino di San Marco, Canale della Giudecca

27 AUGUST – 6 SEPTEMBER Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica Venice International Film Festival The 71st Venice Film Festival will be held on the Lido from August 27th to September 6th 2014, directed by Alberto Barbera, and organized by the Biennale di Venezia chaired by Paolo Baratta. The 11-day Venice Film Festival takes place along the main, seafacing Lido esplanade, between the Hotel des Baines and the Excelsior Between these two hotels is the marble-and-glass Palazzo del Cinema, where official competition screenings take place in the Sala Grande. Other festival screens can be found in the gargantuan PalaLido, inside the Casinò and at the Palabiennale marquee. Press accreditation guarantees virtually unlimited access to the festival; the press pass costs €50 and permits priority entry to a number of special screenings, mostly in the morning and early evening. Arrange this at least two months in advance by contacting the Biennale press office (041 521 8857, www.labiennale.org).

7 SEPTEMBER Regata Storica This event begins with a procession of ornate boats down the Grand Canal, rowed by locals in 16th-century costume. Once this is over, the races start – which is what most locals have come to see. There are four: one for young rowers, one for women, one for rowers of caorline – long canoelike boats in which the prow and the stern are identical – and the last, the most eagerly awaited, featuring two-man sporting gondolini. The finish is at the sharp curve of the Grand Canal between Palazzo Barbi and Ca’ Foscari: here, the judges sit in an ornate raft known as the machina, where the prize-giving takes place. Gran Canal
