It took just days to tear down the MacDonald-Wold building. The former auto dealership was a longtime landmark of downtown Aitkin. Ann Schwartz photo

BY ANN SCHWARTZ Over the years, the “skyline” of Aitkin has changed. The Catholic Church was torn down, CVS pharmacy was built and other changes happened that changed downtown Aitkin’s “skyline.” Aitkin watchers were treated to major “skyline” changes in the last couple of weeks. A new Members Co-op Credit

Union is being constructed on the corner of Minnesota Ave. and 1st St. NE on a site that has been parking lot for over 25 years. Across the street, the MacDonald-Wold dealership and service building, a downtown landmark since 1973, was removed to make way for a new 12,500 square foot Family Dollar facility.

According to data available with the building permit at Aitkin City hall, Family Dollar will be owned by Family Dollar Stores, Inc., of Charlotte, North Carolina. Atwater Group of Chicago is listed as the developer, with Nick Stratigakes the president of the development group. Construction will be done by Bradford Building Co. of

The one-story Family Dollar building won’t be constructed right up to the corner as the MacDonald-Wold building was. It will be set back, with the entrance on the west and parking on the west side of the lot off Minnesota Ave./Hwy.169. Roger Wold was a longtime owner of MacDonald-Wold in Aitkin, died in 2010; portions of his obituary address the history of that corner: “Roger was united in marriage to Georgiana Eimer on June 9, 1950, in Iron Hub. Aitkin VFW visit area veterans

obituaries Doris Ukura

Aitkin VWF members honored the veterans at Aitkin Health Services on Veterans’ Day. Their visit included a meet and greet, sharing treats and delivering cards made by elementary students to the vets. Veterans residing at Aitkin Health Services are standing, left, with Vikings jacket: Frank Keys, Army; seated, from left: Ed Munson, Army; Roger Mapes, Army; Don Hillman, Army; John Tholen, Air Force and Jere Poston, Marines.

reader ribbets Repecting veterans on Veteran’s Day A good friend of mine, a Vietnam Vet visiting Crosby as my guest for breakfast, on November 11 - Veterans Day, was taken aback in that there were no American flags flying on our downtown streets. It looked as just another ordinary day in Crosby, Minnesota. It bothers me greatly, as how could this be overlooked? Has anyone else in Crosby noticed this? I’m sure there are many other veterans in the area who would be disappointed to learn about this. As I thought about this more

throughout the day, I couldn’t help but wonder if the leaders of my small hometown have lost respect for our veterans? Or does Crosby have such a shortfall in their budget that they cannot afford to raise a dozen flags, so as to honor the veterans and their sacrifices for this great country? If that’s the case, then allow a group of volunteers to cover Crosby’s purchase of flags for Veterans Day ourselves, as citizens, and pay to replace them each time they wear out. Hopefully, this is an issue that has simply been overlooked, and

will quickly be corrected, but it’s a shame really. Crosby may not be the most visited place, but none the less, I’m a believer that there should be American flags flying on every street corner, at least, on our main streets. Our brave veterans deserve Crosby’s genuine respect. If the city can’t, or won’t do it then let us, as volunteers, through fundraising, get the flags up for Veterans Day 2016. Remember we raised the flag at Iwo Jima, so we [darn]sure can raise one in Crosby! Jim Hunter Crosby

Understanding your spouse’s personality all touching each other. That’s an analogy for how, at least from a guy’s perspective, conversation seems to jump from one subject to the next and can run in what appear to be random directions. In contrast, waffles are an image for how guys typically process information and engage in conversation. The top of a waffle looks like a series of boxes, and those boxes are separated from one another by walls. Generally speaking, a man’s focus is limited to one box at a time and one box only. When a man is at work, his attention is on his work. When he’s watching a game on television, he’s concentrating on what’s happening in the game. In practical terms, that means it’s difficult for a man engaged in another activity to switch gears suddenly and enter into meaningful conversation with his wife. Admittedly, the imagery oversimplifies the complexities of what happens between a hus-

band and wife, but it’s a good visual that can help couples understand the dynamics of their relationship. And that’s something that’s desperately needed in a lot of homes. We hear from couples on a regular basis who have been married for 20 years, 30 years, or even longer, who still haven’t figured out why they can’t get on the same page with one another. In many cases, they interpret their spouse’s behavior as stubborn refusal to change instead of unique characteristics wired into them by God. Our challenge as couples isn’t to demand that our spouse act and think just like us but to accept his or her God-given design and learn to respect and accommodate each other. Romans 15:7 says, “Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God” (NASB). When it comes to inherent gender differences, acceptance is key.

It’s really true: opposites do attract. If you’re married, then you’ve likely experienced it in countless ways. Your spouse sees the world through entirely different eyes. You fall asleep to noise, but your spouse needs quiet. You’re a night owl, but your spouse enjoys mornings. For the most part, with a little communication, these differences can be navigated. But sometimes it’s differences in communication itself that are the problem. That dilemma is captured imaginatively in the title of a book written by, Bill and Pam Farrel: “Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti.” It’s a simple word picture to illustrate the inherent differences between men and women. For a lot of women, conversation is like a plate of spaghetti. The noodles run in random directions, and they’re

“Skyline” of Aitkin changes| Continued from Pages 1 & 2 tree that they lit each year. They used it for a sales lot until the dealership was sold to Brandl and moved to a new location in east Aitkin

on Hwy. 210/169 in the fall of 2014. Cranes, loaders, and every other conceivable piece of construction equipment keep

downtown Aitkin banging. The new credit union is well under construction, the Family Dollar lot is being cleared and, just a block away, construction
