SCRMC volunteers receive awards Mayor Johnny Magee read a proclamation declaring May 23 through May 29 National Volunteer Appreciation Week in the Laurel/Jones County area. The mayor thanked the volunteers for their service and encouraged everyone to show appreciation for all “who freely give of their valuable time and resources.” Governor Phil Bryant was unable to attend the ceremony; however he sent a video presentation thanking the volunteers for their service. The Keynote Speaker was State Senator Chris McDaniel, who brought his 5-year old son, Chamberlain, with him. “I brought my son Chamberlain with me today because he needs to see what volunteers look like, how they behave, and who they are,” said McDaniel. “I see you all as role models, and I wanted to come say thank you.” McDaniel relayed a story about a time
when his father said something to him that has struck with him throughout the years. “He said, ‘Son, always look for something steady, something sure.’” McDaniel said those words have become the core of his belief system and that volunteers are our country’s “something steady, something sure.” “Everything that makes this country great is just regular men and women willing to volunteer and take a chance,” stated McDaniel. “I believe in you, because I believe in the capacity of our people to self-govern. America, right now, is struggling to find our way. This is the toughest part; we will not

Tuesday, April 25, all 70 volunteers were honored with an award ceremony and appreciation reception at South Central Place. Janet Staples, SCRMC vice president, welcomed everyone along with Bonnie Smith, SCRMC volunteers coordinator. Laurel High School JROTC Color Guard presented the flags and the Pledge of Allegiance was given. Elaine Hill, mortgage loan officer with First State Bank, with a voice like Kate Smith, sang “God Bless America.”

Many of our volunteers look like they are in the (Military) service with all of their pins. They wear them proudly, and I’m very proud for them.” Smith announced that they applied for and completed the process to be approved as an official certified organization for the President of the United States Volunteer Service Awards.” There are three categories of awards depending on the number of hours served in one year, Bronze (100-249 hours), Silver (250-499), and Gold (500 +), plus a Life Time Achievement Award. There were 21 individuals awarded the Bronze, 10 the Silver, and one, Douglas Walters, the Gold. Walters served 695.50 hours in 2016. The Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded to individuals with over 4,000 cumulative hours served. Those receiving this award were Lucille Davis with 4,989.75 hours, Charlene Todd with 8,508.25 hours, and Helen Garraway with 8,972.25 hours. Honorary Volunteers were Ophelia Ingram and Juanita Parker. Volunteers of the Year awards were given to Cathy Hollingsworth for her service with ComfortCare Hospice, Shelby Knotts for her service with Long-Term Care, and Debbie Wilkinson for her service with the Medical Center.

Submitted Technology continues to revolutionize every aspect of life, including education. Sylva-Bay Academy recently boosted its use of the latest “gee-whiz gadgetry” with the introduction of Apple iPads for the classroom. These state-of-the-art tablets house learning and education apps as well as provide access to websites for research. Students are able to quickly access more information and discover more effective paths for learning, with the simple swipe of a touch screen. According to elementary teacher, Ms. Kari Bankston,“…my third and fourth grade students have used the iPads during math class…. We use the iPads to further their math skills through differentiated learning. Each child works at his or her own math level. Students choose from multiple applications and we focus on the skills we are learning for that week. Also,
students can use virtual manipulatives through gaming applications to improve their skills with fractions, number lines, addition, subtraction, divi-
sion, multiplication, etc. I am excited about the new iPads! As a teacher, it’s wonderful to watch your students learn and grow while having fun.” Mike Sumlin, headmaster at Sylva-Bay added, “Our goal is to educate our students in the most effective manner possible.
