Second Grade Summer Reading Dear Parents,

Summer is a nice time to relax, have fun, and enjoy time with family and friends. We would like to encourage you to spend some time reading with your child this summer. Reading with your child will help strengthen your child’s reading skills: fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. It also shows the importance of learning and growing in knowledge. What an excellent example you will be setting for your child! Below is a list of the required reading that will help prepare your child for second grade. All of these books should be available at your local library or at a local bookstore. These will give additional practice in reading common words without being overwhelming. All reading must be done out loud to a parent and independently by the student. Please have them sound out words using their phonograms. Required Reading:  Level 3 books (choose 2 or read all 3): o

A Long Way to a New Land (Joan Sandin)

o

The Courage of Sarah Noble (Alice Dalgliesh)

o

Wagon Wheels (Barbara Brenner)

Please do not limit your child to these three books. It is beneficial for your child to read a variety of reading material throughout the summer including books, newspapers, magazines, and God’s Word. We want to instill the love of reading and knowledge, not force our children to read because they have to. We hope you enjoy your summer with your child! God Bless & Happy Reading!
