Submit to leaders in authority – 1-3 They sit in seat of authority (Moses’ seat) Jesus tells His followers to obey them 2. But do not follow their example – 3 This is an important distinction 3. Works do not match profession – 3-4 Make the law a burden – give no relief 4. Love external display of piety – 5 Make large phylacteries – outward show 5. Love recognition of others – 6-7 Seats of honor – greetings as a rabbi 6. Don’t follow their example – 8-10 One is your Rabbi (Master) – Jesus Christ You are brethren One is your Father – Heavenly Father One is your Master (Lord) – Jesus Christ 7. Greatness in God’s eyes – servant - 11-12 If we exalt self – God may humble Humble yourself – let God exalt those worthy III. Woe to Hypocrites – 13-36 1. Love to win other followers – 15 Win converts to their view – worse in God’s eyes 4. Interpret Law to suit self – 16-22 Made solemn promises – but with a way out 5. Meticulous about minor things – 23-24 Ignore the things that are truly important 6. Focus on externals not internals – 25-28 Clean outside of cup, bowl – inside is dirty Whitewash outside of tomb – full of bones Outside appear righteous, inside is iniquity 7. Build monuments to persecuted – 29-36 You honor the prophets as righteous – 29-30 Say you would not have killed them You are just like your fathers – 31-35
