Serve Everywhere: Love Your City Love is an interesting thing. It doesn’t matter how many times or in how many ways you tell someone “I Love You” they may not believe you. The most effective way to communicate love is to demonstrate it. Christians like to talk about love a lot and yet we get confused when the culture around us doesn’t view us as loving but rather as judgmental and excluding. Perhaps we should spend less time talking about how much we Christians are a loving bunch and start actually loving people. Jesus told his disciples, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35). On Sunday June 23rd we are going to participate in loving our city. We are going to leave the walls of the church and serve in the community in practical, tangible ways! We hope that you join in to Love Your City so that we may demonstrate with our actions that we are becoming disciples just as Jesus instructed us. ~ Dawn Neldon, Director of Serving Everywhere

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Summer 2013

Come Serve With Us! Love Your City is coming on June 23. We will close the church – no worship services, and instead, we are inviting all of us to serve together at Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway. This is actually an act of worshipping God with our hands – doing God’s work for our neighbors. This is a great opportunity for seniors because someone else does all the planning, younger people do the harder work, and meaningful projects are available for us older people. And, we get to be with the rest of the church, something that never really happens with all our different worship services. This year, we have arranged two great projects for seniors to do. First, we will be stuffing school backpacks for kids who otherwise don’t have the resources they need. Second, we will be writing letters to military service men and women oversees who love to hear from people in the states. Please come and be a part of this event and model what great service can look like from our seasoned citizens. ~ Pastor Neal Nybo

Highway Is Getting Ready For Panama Did you know that every month the high school students from our church do a service project to help share God’s love with others? They have visited the sick and elderly in convalescent homes, prepared bags of food at the San Diego Food Bank and served the homeless at the Salvation Army, among other things. Our teenagers also have done overnight inner city mission trips to Los Angeles and San Diego this year and built a home for a poor family in Mexico during their Easter break from school. Our high school students are committed to serving God and sharing His love with others throughout the year… And this summer a team of 38 are preparing to serve on a short-term mission trip to Panama. June 15-30, we will be ministering in the dry, coastal area of Aguadulce—the mountainous region of Coclecito—and doing tribal ministry in the tropical area of the Chagres river. Our students will share God’s love by leading eight different Vacation Bible School programs in churches, schools and community parks for hundreds of children! Students will also share the message of salvation through the mimedrama, “Redemption” in local high schools, churches, market places and plazas. Finally, our work projects will include building fences, creating community gardens, doing light construction and painting local schools. Thank you for your prayers that God will keep us safe and healthy. Pray that He will use us to share the Good News about salvation with others! If you would like to support financially the high school Panama Mission Trip, this is the way. Visit the table in the church courtyard on Sundays, give on-line at the church web-site or plan on participating in the Special Offering June 9 in the services when we commission the team. Blessings! How about a date? A cute girl was giving a manicure to a man in the barber shop. The man said, “How about a date later?” She said, “I’m married.” “So call up your husband and tell him you’re going to visit a girlfriend.” She said, “You tell him yourself. He’s shaving you.” Chicken Little

I don’t know, just go ask your computer...

A Healthy Laugh My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. Now she’s 97, but we don’t know where she is. A man was eager to kiss his girlfriend, but she was reluctant. “Don’t you know that kissing is good for arthritis?” he told her. “I don’t have arthritis,” she replied. He retorted, “Don’t you believe in preventative medicine?”

A teacher read the story of “Chicken Little” to her first grade class. She came to the part where Chicken Little tried to warn the farmer. “And so,” she read, “Chicken Little went to the farmer and said, ‘The sky is falling, the sky is falling!’” The teacher paused, the asked the class, “ And what do you think that farmer said?” A little girl raised her hand and answered, “I think he said, ‘Holy cow! A talking chicken!’”

Staff Spotlight Carole Ericson first came to RBCPC about five years ago when she was invited by a friend to attend the Sunday Morning Worship Café. That led to her joining Mike Tierce’s tech team. Now, she can be found in the tech booth at any weekend service volunteering as the lighting technician. Originally from Australia, Carole and her husband, John raised three children. Now grown, her two daughters and two grandchildren live in Australia and her son is in Denver. During Pastor Ray’s last year at the church, Carole worked as his assistant. This had her working closely with the Mission Committee and ministries such as Windjammers, Savvy Travelers and Prime Time. Today Carole is happily working as assistant to Jeannie McCoy, Dawn Neldon and Ryan Ross as we strive to become disciples, grow relationships and serve everywhere.

Golden Share Food Program “Oh what a blessing”, said a recipient last month! “I live on Social Security and SSI, and one Golden Share box of frozen and fresh foods will provide meals for me for a week – I don’t know what I would do without this wonderful program sponsored by the Deacons.” “Two boxes of Golden Share foods provide meals for my family and with growing teenagers it will feed us for a week and helps with my grocery budget,” says another mother who has been purchasing and receiving the food boxes. Stretching your grocery dollars is what is it all about – if you eat, you qualify! The boxes contain various menus, from all vegan to all protein, to a mixed basic box with meats, veggies, fresh fruit and salad makings. The Deacons accept donations of any amount to help underwrite the cost of the Golden Share boxes for those in our church family in need including those in the community and military families in the area.

Elders & Elders

Deacons

Bruce took the Elders through an exercise where each Elder talked about what the Holy Spirit is doing in his or her life. Then, each one was prayed over by laying of hands from fellow Elders. For the next program year, the half-time position held by Roger Anderson, Director of Choral and Instrumental Activities, will be phased out and replaced with a full time position, Associate Director of Traditional Worship. Roger was asked to consider the full time position, but he respectfully declined due the other full time professional commitments. The Elders express regret for Roger’s departure and enthusiasm for the opportunity that this plan offers.

Deacons

Should you like to donate or order a box, stop by the Deacon Table on the first two Sundays of each month. We are happy to place your order or answer any questions. Delivery to the church is usually the last Saturday of each month. Check out the website: www.goldensharefoods.com or contact the Deacons.

The Deacons, Preschool, and Resale shops held a Spring Cleaning Drop-Off Drive. Families dropped off donations in the church parking lot on Thursdays and Fridays. All items were transported to the resale shop in Poway It was a big success with many preschool families being introduced to the Resale shops. Deacons will be able to help needy families and Missions will be able to support more special needs children in our preschool. Seniors using the bus service to travel to Sunday Church appreciate this support and convenience. They would love to have many more join them for fellowship and company.

Seniors Reflect The word “service” is found in 183 verses, 46 chapters and 31 books, Holy Bible, King James. “For just as the body without the spirit is dead so faith without works is also dead. Holy Bible, TNRSV: James 2:26. A Message From The Editors Senior Moments is a publication to all senior members of our RBCPC family of worshipers: Take a moment to consider the events and activities that are structured to provide services, enjoyment and growth to our seniors. RBCPC’s membership goal has always been to serve the “whole” family - all genders and ages.
