Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.

O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak Fre e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center opening with a gathering and fellowship time at 5:30 pm. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus UMCOR Support Continues to Be Needed We were spared devastation from Hurricane Irma in our area this week. Yet…we recognize our prayers of thanksgiving are also met with the need to pray for those who were devastated by the storm. This has been a crazy weather time with both Harvey and Irma over recent weeks. This is the time for the church to be the church. We are grateful to Ken Winzeler and the Shalimar UMC Disaster Team. This team met last week and was prepared to help as a shelter if we were called upon. A wonderful spirit of wanting to help people was evident in the room when our disaster team planned last week. The same cooperation and readiness to help was also demonstrated by our great staff. We were not called this time but I am so grateful for the “servant spirit” of our congregation to help. In South Florida lives were lost and property destroyed. What can we do to help? UMCOR will be helping those hit by Irma. As we did with Texas and Hurricane Harvey, our support to UMCOR will offer help to those effected by the storm. Our United Methodist Church is also beginning to plan and send teams to go and help in Texas. Brian Dale, our pastor who leads missions has additional information in this week’s Beacon about how we can be of help. One hundred percent of our giving to UMCOR goes to help those in need in these times of disaster. UMCOR administrative costs are already covered. This arm of our church is both simple and nimble in helping those in need. The staying power of help is also good for the marathon of need. Our UMCOR giving to date is $21,000 through 9/12/17. Thank you for your compassion and generosity in second mile giving. Let the church be the church and help in this time of storm and disruption for so many people. Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor [email protected]

30 - Day Praying for Your Pastor Challenge Pastor Appreciation month is October and It is my hope that you already pray for SUMC and our Pastors on a regular basis. On behalf of the Tuesday Night Prayer Group and the Prayer Ministry Team, I would like to invite each of you to join us in a commitment to pray for our pastors, Pastor Philip, Pastor Brian, Pastor Faith, and Pastor Brad each day during the month of October. We hope that we can count on your support by signing up to pray for our Pastors and SUMC for the 31 days of October. We are not asking for a time, only that you commit to pray daily for each of the pastors and for SUMC. There are signup sheets in each of the Sunday School Attendance Notebooks and there will be signup sheets available in the FLC for the next few weeks for your convenience. You will be provided with a “30 day Pray for Your Pastors Challenge” to aid you in praying daily. The guide is for 30 days but I feel that after 30 days of this challenge, we should be able to pray at least one day without a guide. I know some of you are already praying for our pastors, and I thank you for doing so. Please sign up anyway. With all that is happening in this world right now, prayer is more important than ever. What better way to help do our part in changing the world than to start right here at SUMC. I recently heard someone say we need to "Pray Long and Pray Hard". It is my belief that Prayer does make a difference so please join us in praying for our Pastors each day during the month October and hopefully every day of the year. This could very well be the best gift you could ever give to our pastors. "God begins answering when the Prayer is made. Prayer triggers the actions in Heaven." Max Lucado "Before Amen". Thank you in advance for your support. Jim Brantley SUMC Prayer Ministry Team.

Disaster Relief Efforts What’s the latest on our Disaster Relief Efforts? It has been an amazing thing to watch Hurricane Irma come on the heels of Hurricane Harvey and cause so much havoc to our west and to our east. I have seen pictures of multi-ton machines blown over, whole bays emptied of their water, and many other places flooded. I am awed by the power that a hurricane can visit on such a large area. I am even more in awe when I consider that God is greater than all the hurricanes that have ever been. I know I share with you the great feeling of relief that we were spared much of the devastation, and equally great compassion for the millions of people who have been affected. Many people have asked if there is any more we can do. We know that restoring whole towns is a massive undertaking that will take months, if not years. Here are some things you might consider to be a part of the solution: Pray—Whatever else you might do, never cease to pray. The beginning of all our efforts should be a humble acknowledgment that we need God’s help, and all our efforts are for his glory. Give money—We have been asking people to direct giving to UMCOR, our church’s disaster relief agency. They are hard at work mobilizing teams, distributing supplies, and coordinating with other private and governmental agencies. Money can be easily converted to whatever supplies they need. Simply put “UMCOR” or “disaster relief” in the memo line of your check, or on the envelope if it is a cash donation. Give supplies—It is important to give only the donations that are requested. You may think they need clothes and blankets, but if they are not ready to receive them, your generous gift quickly becomes trash for someone else to deal with. Be on the lookout for changes in items requested. Meanwhile, they are only asking for equipment needed to “muck out” houses: box fans, 25' heavy-duty 14-gauge extension cords, 2 gallon garden sprayers, flat billed shovels, and rakes with 3" tines. Bring to the church for delivery to a distribution point. Make hygiene kits and cleaning kits—This is a fun project for your small group to do. Thousands are needed, and any surpluses go into storage for the next disaster. If you want to donate cleaning kits and hygiene kits, go to www.umcor.org, and click on “relief supplies” for instructions. Bring them to the church for delivery to a distribution point. Work on a relief team—We have several people in our church already trained as emergency response workers. If you would like to go to the disaster site and help out, getting ERT certified is a great way to start. Our conference is

holding ERT training on Saturday, September 23rd at Highland Park UMC, Dothan, and September 24 at Atmore First UMC. Not all workers are required to have the training, but each team needs to be headed by someone who is certified. Look for other church communications in the near future for an opportunity to go with a team. I am so grateful for all the stories of noble and compassionate people who rise to the occasion when disaster strikes. I am grateful, too, for the privilege of being associated with the loving people of Shalimar UMC. Let us give God the glory in all that we do! Pastor Brian

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals Sustained by God Have you ever walked through your kitchen after dinner looking for the one more thing to eat, even though you had plenty at the table? Or maybe you saw the new version of something come out that you own and want the upgrade even though yours works just fine. This week, we are looking at what it means to be satisfied. When we seek God daily, we grow in our relationship with him, and our desires start to be fed by God. Over time, our spiritual hunger is fed, and we start to feel more satisfied in life. When we neglect our relationship with God, we tend to result in the random search for one more thing to top us off, just like we do in the kitchen after dinner. Questions to Ponder: 1. How do you relate to the idea of “chasing after fullness”?§ 2.

What does it mean to go from expecting to accepting?§

3.

Have you ever experienced a sense of being fed when you focused on feeding others?§

4.

What gives you satisfaction in life? How do you connect this source of satisfaction with God’s activity in your life? with God’s work in the world?†

5.

How would you answer Jesus’ question, “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:51) How would your answer to that question today differ from your answer ten years ago? Last month?†
