St. Mary’s Cathedral history is extraordinarily rich and inspiring. It is a story that needs to be shared and retold to continually enthuse the many generations to come. Coming this Sunday, September 8th, 10 AM, the Parish Hall will be renamed and dedicated as Martyrs Hall for this purpose. Fresh paint, new track lighting, and six educational panels of museum quality are being hung to share the brilliant news of our past. This is phase one of the project. The Sisters’ Shrine committee—Marcia Wunderlich (chair), Patricia McFarland, Carol Morris, Carmen Phillipy, Iolis Carruthers, Rev. Bindy Snyder, Anne Boykin, Preston Johnson, Mark Talley, and Cynthia Hawes—has been meeting for months to help transform our Parish Hall into a teaching center, with panel assistance from Scott Blake, Monty Shane, and John Gary. Anonymous donations funded the project, and the Chapter approved the final plans at the August 2013 meeting. So, please join us this Sunday, 10 AM, for the dedication of Martyrs Hall. Ribbon cutting, introductions, and dramatic readings from the journals of Constance and her Companions and Bishop Quintard will all be part of the dedication of the newly renovated space.

The Canon’s Corner My three year old is very much into superheroes. I’m learning they’re actually kinda great. Super powers, capes, mind-reading, and interesting gadgets seem to come with them. Each morning he comes down the stairs announcing he is someone new. Earlier it was Superman, then it was Spiderman. Then just this week he announced he was Fix-it Man…. which is actually quite handy since we are still fixing the kitchen in our new house. This last morning, however, was a little different. Instead of telling me who he was, he wanted me to tell him who I was. “Who are you today, mom?” What a question! About fifty names went through my head: I am “Make-Your-BreakfastLunch-And-Dinner Woman; I am Rushing woman; I am change -a-Diaper-While-Feeding-The –Other-Kid Woman. After a moment with all those names, I looked at him and must have just shrugged. But Foster beamed. “I know who you are… you’re Momma,” he said. “You’re Momma.” And then he nodded, did his Minnesota thing where he adds, “Ya sure” at the end of his sentence and was off, cape streaming behind him. Now on one hand maybe “Momma” has implied super powers and mind melding characteristics, which clearly I should be tapping into more often. But on the other hand, maybe he was telling me that being “Momma” was enough. It’s just right, actually. Be who I am. Crazy-rushing woman, makethose-meals woman. Be me, be my crazy, imperfect self. It’s enough. This month, on September 15 and 22 at formation hour, we are going to be talking about the Gifts of Imperfection, and yes, that’s GIFTS. Because who we are is enough, flaws and all, and maybe just maybe it might be our imperfections – all our bumps and warts and scars, which can actually teach us how to live authentic, real, and whole-hearted lives. No, we won’t be making any imperfection lists but we will be talking some about courage, creativity, gratitude and joy, connection and play. Come be yourself and come join the conversation !

BENCH NOTES

We Give Thanks for Altar Guild!

A Word from Your Organist/Choirmaster

By now, I imagine many of you are wondering about that lovely 9-foot Yamaha concert grand piano nestled next to the chancel in the Cathedral nave. I am delighted to share with you that we are hoping to acquire this excellent instrument to support our lively Sunday liturgies and our thriving concert series, and I hope you will prayerfully consider supporting this acquisition.

We offer an enormous thank you to the St. Mary’s Altar Guild for their hard work polishing, shining, dusting, and overall beautifying our altar! They have spent several Saturdays in August devoted to keeping the loveliness of our space. Their dedication is deeply inspiring!

First, a little background: this piano was built in 2000 for the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC and was used as one of their competition instruments. It has been in Memphis since 2008 and has been THE go-to instrument for musicians requesting a Yamaha, including Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, Tony Bennett, and Russian pianist Olga Kern. It is one of the CFIIIS series, the premiere concert piano line from the Yamaha company, and unlike our present piano, it is truly able to fill our Cathedral space with a deep, rich sound. While it is a used piano, it is in impeccable condition. A new Yamaha CFIIIS of this caliber would cost around $150,000, but we are able to purchase this particular instrument from Memphis Music for $40,800, a real bargain and a superb long-term investment. Part of the deal includes trading-in our 100-year old Steinway, a gift in the late 70’s from the estate of Mrs. Birdie Bower, who served as organist at the Cathedral in the mid-20’s. You may ask, “Why would we ever trade a Steinway for a Yamaha?” Indeed, Steinway is considered by many to be the top -of-the-line, but our instrument was built before they made crucial upgrades to the action and soundboard, and while it is a decent piano, it doesn’t compare to this newer Yamaha. To put it bluntly, our Steinway is more like a fair boxed wine, while this Yamaha is a great bottle of Dom Perignon! So, if you like what you hear on Sunday mornings and are interested in supporting this important new component of our flourishing music ministry, I hope you will consider donating toward its purchase. Checks may be made to “St. Mary’s Cathedral” and simply write “Piano” in the subject line. Please know that all gifts are tax-deductible and should be considered above and beyond your faithful pledge. Please don’t hesitate askGloria, me any questions, and I hope you Soli to Deo share my enthusiasm for this excellent addition to our worship Scott Elsholz life! Soli Deo Gloria, Scott Elsholz
