PASTOR’S POINTS Dear Church Family, What an awesome and encouraging day we had on Reveal Sunday! We had a wonderful aendance in our 2:42 groups as well as our worship services (531 in total)!! It was great to see so many back worshipping the Lord!! We also had a wonderful +me on Sunday evening as we gathered together to pray together and worship our great God!

Alan D. Sco

It was great to gather together and consider the future of our church family. Over the course of the next five weeks we are going to be prepare ourselves for the next chapter in the ministry of Oakhill. On October 5th we will launch our new worship schedule with great an+cipa+on. I am so excited to see what God is going to do as we follow Him and sacrifice for the good of others.

Lead Pastor

Sacrifice is exactly what it is going to take. We need people to step up in every area of ministry. There are places to serve in the areas of worship, children, asco@oakhillbc.org students, nursery, greeters, and ushers just to name a few. Now would be a great +me to step forward and serve in one of these areas. Make sure that you are not just a “Consumer Chris+an”! Make it your goal to serve and not to be served. You are needed, and you can make a huge difference! You could also sacrifice by being willing to be, “One of the 75”!! We really need at least 75 people to commit to our new 9:30am contemporary service. Pick up one of the “A Place for _________” booklets on the welcome center, fill out the commitment card in the back of the book and tear it off and place it in the offering plate this coming Sunday. If your 2:42 group decides not to switch service +mes, but you are willing to switch please know that we will be star+ng new 2:42 groups that will meet at 11:00am right a@er the 9:30am service. We need people who will support the new service and these new small groups as well. We are praying for people to be willing to change\sacrifice for the good of those who are not even here yet. Would you be “One of the 75”?? I love you and I love being your pastor,

Music Notes This month I would like to talk about the new First Impressions Ministry at Oakhill. One of the things I love most about Oakhill Bap+st Church is the friendliness of its people. We are a loving church family; we should always strive to grow in this area. One of the best ways that we can reach our first +me visitors and guests is through a First Impressions Ministry Team. What is First Impressions All About? A First Impressions Ministry is not just about making first impressions, but it is also about making las+ng impressions. First impressions maer to guests in our church. Before the songs have been sung or the sermon has been given, our guests have formed opinions of our church based on their first impressions. Most guests consider and evaluate things that long +me members of Oakhill may take for granted. We must be aware of the impressions that we are making and leaving on our guests. Why is a First Impressions Ministry Team Important? A First Impressions Ministry Team is important to help lead our church family to always look at things from a fresh perspec+ve. A First Impressions Ministry Team will be the first line of responsibility in four key areas: Understanding our guests as people with real needs. Communica+ng to our guests - acceptance, respect, and value. Building teams who believe that people maer to God. Honoring God as we offer our best to our people and community.

How Can I Be a Part? For the past several months I have been promo+ng and recrui+ng for a First Impressions Ministry Team. There has been a good number of people step up and volunteer for this ministry, and I want to thank you for your interest and commitment to this important area of ministry at Oakhill Bap+st Church. We s+ll have room for plenty of others too, so if you are interested in learning more about a First Impressions Ministry, or if you have been recruited for this ministry already, then I am excited to announce two upcoming training dates.

Jason Woolsey Pastor of Worship & Young Adults [email protected]

Two Training Dates – Sunday, September 21st @ 4:30PM in room # 103 Sunday, September 28th @ 4:30PM in room # 103

If you are currently on the Greeter Schedule, then this mee+ng is for you. If you have shown an interest in this ministry, then this mee+ng is for you. If you have been recruited for this ministry and I have spoken to you about first impressions, then this mee+ng is for you. Two separate mee+ng dates are being offered (for the exact same training) to help accommodate everyone’s schedules and to help everyone be able to make one of the mee+ngs. A beer explana+on of the First Impressions Ministry and a brief training will be offered on both dates. You simply need to a end one of the mee-ngs.

Blessings! Jason Woolsey

Abandoned City, Abandoned Hearts As I have had +me to reflect on the mission trip to Detroit, one word keeps resurfacing in my mind: abandoned. We saw a lot of abandoned businesses, homes, and even skyscrapers. This is so different from our normal day to day life; we might see an occasional house or business that has been abandoned but rarely do we see many buildings le@ unaended. The devasta+on in Detroit got me thinking about how this happened. It certainly did not happen overnight. Detroit is seeing the culmina+on of decades of mismanagement, corrup+on, and corporate greed. I also would not lay the blame at the feet of any one party or organiza+on, there are many that have a hand in the decima+on of this once great city. Ul+mately sin is to blame. Sin in the hearts of fallen men has caused Bryan R. Gotcher this city to be reduced to its current state. From the drug dealers to the pros+tutes, to the government and businessmen, sin has reigned in the hearts of these people. The result is Pastor of Missions & easy to see…total destruc+on. This should not surprise us, the promise of sin has always Administration been destruc+on and devasta+on and eventually death. Now all that is le@, in many areas of this city, is hopeless and hur+ng people trying to make a way in the abandoned [email protected] wasteland. Blog: bryangotcher. Some may say, "What is the point?", or "Why even try?". Well, when it comes to hopeless wordpress.com situa+ons, Jesus is the one that can truly turn it around. The Bible says in Isaiah 61 that God will take our ashes (ruin, waste, destruc+on) and give us a crown of beauty (grace, mercy, salva+on). Jesus is in the business of finding hope in hopeless situa+ons. He overcame the biggest barrier to hope…sin. That is why we need to con+nue to work in Detroit; because really the answer is not going to be found in city hall or on a factory floor, it has to start with Jesus. In this truth we find a message even for our own hearts. If we are not careful the abandonment that is felt in Detroit can be felt in our hearts. As believers, we need to con+nually check our hearts for sin. Then we need to allow Jesus to work in our hearts. If not then our hearts will con+nue to be a mess of corrup+on, which will leave to devasta+on in our lives and o@en a feeling of abandonment. We know, of course, that the Lord does not abandon us; however, the feeling is s+ll very much there as we walk further and further away from Him. Like a house or building you must do rou+ne maintenance. You must cut the grass, clean out the guers, make repairs, put on a new roof, etc. Your heart must be maintained by Jesus. He is not only the Great Shepherd, He is the great Repairman of our hearts. If we would submit to Jesus and allow Him to work in our hearts our faith would grow exponen+ally and we would be closer to God than ever before. We simply need to make Jesus a priority. He must be more important than our sin, more important than our personal +me, more important than our pleasure. Jesus must be number one. Again, the answer for our hearts and for Detroit starts with Jesus. We don’t need a complicated economic plan for recovery in Detroit, just like you probably don’t need a new plan for your faith. The answer is there right in front of you-- turn to Jesus. Allow Him to work in your heart and pray that the city of Detroit will let Him in to theirs.

“School days, school days, wonderful, wonderful school days”. This was my alarm clock during my school years, Ugh… My dad would walk through the house most mornings singing this song as loud and high pitched as he could! This was always very annoying and would provoke me to throw my pillow over my head and groan for him to stop. I truly believe this made him sing even louder and smile even bigger. I am my father’s daughter. This may have annoyed me as a child but obviously stayed with me as something to delightfully do for my girls. I kept his tradition going in my home and my girls reaction is VERY similar to my reaction over 25 years ago. You see even though times are changing and many state that parenting and children are different from what “they used to be”. There are some things as simple as singing to my girls in the morning that remain the same. I am very blessed to have been raised in a God fearing home that sticks together no matter how mad or frustrated you get and has silly traditions that have been passed down over the years. Don’t get me wrong, we had our moments but we were raised to know the value of family and to be there for one another and encourage and lift each other up in prayer through our faith in God. These family values have been passed down through several generations. They give me hope in knowing that just because times are changing there are still values that can remain the same if we just cherish and respect the meaning behind them. We are the true family of Jesus. Matthew 12:50 tells us that anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother! This is what our heavenly Father is passing down to our generations. We need to respect these words in knowing that our heavenly family needs to be treated with the same values, respect, prayer, lifting up and encouragement. Don’t assume your family only resides in your home. You are part of a much bigger family that loves you and is there for you forever and ever. Thank you church family for the opportunity to love on your kids. God Bless,

WOMEN ON MISSION A FOCUS ON GLOBAL HUNGER RELIEF Southern Bap+sts have always been concerned about the plight of world hunger. In the mid-1970s,a worldwide food shortage caused us to develop an organized response to the problem. We have served the hungry throughout history, but the first World Hunger Day in the Southern Bap+st Conven+on (SBC) was in 1978. SBC giving records for world hunger date back to at least 1977. In 1997, a resolu+on passed by the SBC referred to the “world hunger fund”, an informal way of talking about money given to help conduct hunger ministries. Only the offering for Global Hunger Relief uses 100% of all contribu+ons to provide relief for hunger related causes, including not just food, but also clean water and educa+on. This is possible because personnel; are already in place and administra+ve and promo+onal costs come from other budgets. The North American Mission Board receives 20 cents of every dollar to support hunger projects in the United States. Eighty cents of every dollar go to the Interna+onal Mission Board to be used for hunger relief, including water well drilling, agricultural educa+on, water purifica+on, etc. When Southern Bap+sts give food or teach beer ways to grow it, they are there for the long haul, seeking to build rela+onships with people and eventually lead them to a rela+onship with Christ. -wrien by Ann Knowles In the world today…….. An es+mated 1.02 billion people, or about one-sixth of the world’s popula+on, are undernourished. Every five seconds, a child dies from malnourishment. In the United States alone, 49 million people– 17 million of whom are children– do not have enough to eat. These are sobering facts for those of us who never miss a meal. What can we do to help change these numbers? -sta+s+cs cited at GlobalHungerRelief.com

Our Global Hunger receipts to date are $2,170.60. Women on Mission will meet Monday September 8th at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for a Ladies’ Potluck. All ladies are invited to join us for food, fellowship, and fun!
