Our Pastor’s News If you have not noticed that the bulletin boards in the hallways have been beautifully and professionally updated, look at them again.

Greetings! In last month’s issue of the Good News, I shared some excitement happening at our church. Please allow me to share more good news. The first Movie Night was a huge success with more than 100+ people attending, including many children. We are planning to run Movie Night on the first Sunday of each month except September, because the first Sunday in September is a long Labor Day weekend. The next Movie Night will be on the 5th of October. It will be a grand opening of the theater with a spaghetti dinner. So, start thinking about who you would like to invite to the October movie night. I guarantee that we offer a special movie viewing experience. Got popcorn? Yes we do.

Judith Sanders is a grandmother of two of our Preschool children, Kaya and Rosalind Neville. Kaya has moved on to attend Kindergarten this year. Rosalind is still attending this year. God bless their hearts! Judy has graciously volunteered to work on the bulletin boards in the halls. “Sweating over them and working within the walls of FFUMC is therapeutic,” Judy says. Talking about the walls, our Greg has spent weeks painting the walls, both downstairs and upstairs. Thank you, Greg! The Sunday school has received a major makeover. The classrooms have been cleaned up and rearranged very neatly, ready for the new Sunday school year with a new curriculum. The nursery has been updated with new toys and props. Susan and Kim dug out loads of trash and cleaned up the resource room. Also, our Sunday School has a new name, “the Tree House.”

2

If you are still wondering what this means, look up I Peter 2:24 (KJV), which says “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness, by whose stripes you were healed.” In RSV and NIV, the tree is translated as “the cross.” At this “Tree House”, our children will gain the knowledge of the cross and grow like a tree planted by water and bear fruits to love God and neighbors. Kim happened to notice from a commercial truck that says, “Still Growing” and thought immediately about the wording for our tree house. The growth that I have prayed to bring to FFUMC is not just growth in number, but spiritual growth as well. We as a church and individually want to continue to grow in love and fellowship with others, having knowledge of the cross, and faith. “May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love.” (Ephesians 3:17) Still growing in Christ, Phillips

Did you know that….? Determination, discipline and hard work were benchmarks in Joanne Garrisi’s family long before she took her first childhood steps. Grandpa Giovanni arrived from Sicily in 1907 with a third-grade education to seek a better life in America. Joanne recalls stories about her devout Catholic grandfather attending a Protestant church to learn English, and his motto: “The best way to make money is to own your own business; if you work for others, you are making them rich.” And so it was that the elder Garrisi opened a music and furniture store in Detroit, Michigan, eager to support his family on his own. His determination took an ugly turn when his Sicilian roots eventually drew “The Mob” that sought protection money … an arrangement Giovanni would not condone. “The Mafia blew up Grandpa’s store,” Joanne says. “But it didn’t stop him from moving forward and starting a new business to remodel houses. Even in the Depression, he found work to forge ahead.” Such determination to succeed continued when Joanne’s father completed his pediatric residency in St. Louis, and moved his family to California to open a private practice in Montebello. During his undergraduate studies at Wayne University in Detroit, Joanne’s father met and married her mother, who was one of two women in the chemistry department. Eventually, the couple welcomed five children into the family with the father assuming the role of disciplinarian. Joanne says he was a loving, happy man who trained his offspring to be consistent and to be responsible. Yet, he jokingly announced he was the legislative, executive and judicial administrator of the household laws. His compassion surfaced in other ways, particularly when the children played with their dogs, cats, birds and fish. “Dad would make an incubator in the oven for our litters of puppies. With his medical expertise, he would even give the animals vitamins with an eye dropper.” Joanne’s upbringing had a pronounced effect on her life. However, she wishes she would have taken a softer approach in raising her two sons, Tim (an estimator in Northern California) and Joe (a stockbroker in Southern California). “Sometimes I regret not always realizing to have a good relationship with your children, you need to respect them as much as you want them to respect you,” she says. “You want to take the time to sit down and talk in a nice tone, be loving and affectionate. This is what I do with my two grandchildren who know me as their Play Grandma.” Her parents, who attended an Orthodox Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years, enrolled teenage Joanne at Culter’s Christian Academy in West Los Angeles. After high school, she entered community college, but dropped out to get married and give birth to her first child. Determination led her to Cal State Long Beach to earn a degree in Human Development at age 52. “In my mid-40s, I fulfilled my dream and moved to Idyllwild to complete my www.ffumc.net

college studies,” she offers. “My family thought I was nuts, but I broke my mold of uniformity.” Never one to shirk responsibility, Joanne worked for 20 years in the domestic freight transportation business. For one company, she was a customer service representative helping move freight to and from Puerto Rico and the U.S. for such clients as StarKist Tuna and Bacardi Rum. In another position, she worked with railroad freight operations throughout America. She retired last December as an attorney clerk for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Her church life was consistent from childhood to age 40 when she became disillusioned with worshipping in a building, and turned to television ministries. “But God eventually told me to go back,” she says. “And I church shopped for quite a while.” She visited Fullerton First UMC 10 years ago, and loved the old hymns and feeling of a traditional sanctuary. After recently visiting on and off, she joined the church this summer. “I particularly like Pastor Phillips’ personal testimony,” she adds. Last month, she accepted the role of FFUMC Greeter chairwoman. She spends time volunteering at Pathways to Hope, a program that helps adults and children get back on their feet in economically stressed times. After Joanne’s father died five years ago, her mother at age 90 became reacquainted with her college lab partner, age 91, who said he never forgot her. The pair married, moved to Whittier and looked forward to Joanne helping out at least once a week. “Right now, I’m just enjoying my new apartment in Fullerton,” Joanne says. She also adheres to a healthy diet and exercise program, evident in her choice to always bring her own food to events. “And I’m looking forward to encouraging church members to sign up as greeters,” she concludes. Do you think the United States’ racial problems ended with the passage of civil rights legislation for voting, housing or education rights? Think again! Dear White America by Tim Wise is a very well written and informative book about the subtle ways people of color are discriminated against in our country. His statements are backed up with plenty of research and statistics. Many of the issues he discusses may not even be ones you’ve thought about. The sub-title of the book is Letter To A New Minority. The back cover states, “Faced with mounting economic, cultural and political insecurity, many whites are growing anxious with the fact that they will soon no longer constitute the majority of the population…” Mr. Wise is a highly regarded scholar and author who is “white”. “He is advocating a path of national revival grounded in social unity and the embrace of our multicultural past, present and future.” Read this book…you’ll be glad you did!

FULLERTON FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH’S MISSION STATEMENT Fullerton First United Methodist Church is a community of faith that seeks to be a growing and dynamic church in Fullerton with an outreach to this region of Orange County and beyond. We are a part of a world-wide communion who believe in God’s transforming love as demonstrated by the life and teaching and living influence of Jesus. Believing that we are undergirded by God’s presence through God’s Holy Spirit in our daily living, we serve God as we endeavor: to reach out and receive persons into the faith family as they are; to help persons relate to God and grow in their commitment to the values exemplified in Jesus; to provide opportunities for persons to grow and deepen their faith as Christian disciples; to send persons into God’s creation as faithful disciples. As God’s people we seek to bring a fresh vision of hope as we minister to one another and the larger community in which we reside. We seek to faithfully live out these four foundational missional principles. We shall endeavor to be a place of grace in today’s world. www.ffumc.net
