Appalachian Air Announces Ticket Sales

Luke Schmidt of L.B. Schmidt and Associates, LLC.

The group leading the development of commercial air service in Eastern Kentucky today announced that tickets are now on sale for Pikeville’s new commercial air service, Appalachian Air. “This is a major milestone for this project,” said Luke B. Schmidt, President of Louisville-based L.B. Schmidt & Associates, LLC, the consulting firm that has served as the facilitator of this project for the City of Pikeville, the Pikeville – Pike County Airport Board and the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. “Our project partners have been working diligently towards this day for over three years, and new commercial air service – the first ever in Eastern Kentucky – will soon start on October 27, 2014,” Schmidt continued. The Appalachian Air web site (www. appalachianair.com) is now live and visitors to the site can now plan and book their trips online. Visitors can book round trips from Pikeville (airport code PVL) to Nashville, if Nashville is their final destination, or, visitors can book flights on Appalachian Air to Nashville and then 4 | BUSINESS CALL

book a second trip and connect to any of the eight airlines that serve Nashville International Airport (airport code BNA) to over 50 nonstop destinations. The Appalachian Air web site is easy to use. Visitors to the site can book a trip in a matter of minutes. The web site also includes a unique Trip Cost Calculator (found on the Home page) which will quickly compare the total trip cost not only from Pikeville, but from surrounding airports. In most instances it is expected that total trip costs for passengers will be lower by flying out of Pikeville. The first tickets for the new service were purchased on Monday morning, October 6th by Dr. Rakesh Sachdeva M.D. And his wife, Dr. Seema Sachdeva M.D. Dr. Rakesh Sachdeva is also a member of the Pikeville – Pike County Airport Board and a long-time supporter of the project (please see accompanying photograph). The new service will be operated by Public Charters, Inc. (PCI) of Avoca, PA and Corporate Flight Management

(CFM) of Smyrna, TN, dba Appalachian Air (FAA: 14 Part 135; DOT 14 C.F.R. Part 298 Commuter) in accordance with 14 C.F.R. Part 380 public charter regulations. CFM will serve as the direct air carrier and will be responsible for all flying aspects of the service. CFM holds the highest safety rating in its class and is the largest operator of the BAE Jetstream J32 in the U.S., the aircraft which will be used on the Pikeville – Nashville route. PCI will serve as the indirect air carrier and will be responsible for ticketing and ground services. “CFM is proud to be part of this project,” said Allen Howell, CEO of Corporate Flight Management. “Our team has been working for two years towards this day and we are looking forward to providing our unique brand of personal service to our Pikeville customers. The Jetstream J32 is a terrific aircraft, with a pressurized stand-up cabin and we know our customers are going to love flying on it,” Howell said. “PCI is also proud to be a part of this project,” said Jim Gallagher, President of

We are pleased to see the launch of ticket sales on AppalachianAir.com. We have also made arrangements in Nashville with our partners at Envoy (formerly known as American Eagle), Inshuttle, and Signature Flight Support to provide a pleasant customer experience at BNA,” said Gallagher. “The launch of ticket sales and flights this month on Appalachian Air is yet another step forward for the City of Pikeville and all of Eastern Kentucky,” said Donovan Blackburn, Pikeville City Manager. “This community has been waiting a long time for this service and we are pleased to serve as the new commercial air Gateway to Eastern Kentucky, Southwestern Virginia and Southwestern West Virginia. This service will help all of us to create badly needed new jobs in the coalfields,” Blackburn continued. Attendees sign commemorative poster

The University of Pikeville Continues to Achieve and Succeed Even though the school year has just begun, the University of Pikeville has already celebrated great successes this year. With more than 2,400 students, the fall 2014 semester marks the fifth consecutive record enrollment for the University of Pikeville.

ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING COLLEGES

The Chronicle’s “Almanac of Higher Education 2014,” which publishes data and trends in higher education, ranked UPIKE 20th nationally among private baccalaureate institutions from 20022012. During that time, UPIKE experienced a 69.2 percent increase in enrollment, going from 1,201 to 2,032 students. Last fall, total enrollment topped 2,300, increasing for a fourth consecutive year. University administrators are optimistic that the upward trajectory will continue. “The Chronicle of Higher Education is among the most respected resources in higher education and we were pleased to earn a designation as one of the fastest-growing institutions,” said Dr. James L. Hurley, President. “Our significant growth has continued beyond the Chronicle’s timeline and is a testament to the value of a UPIKE degree. We believe the numbers speak volumes about our personal approach to education and the student experience. What better way to begin our 125th year as a school of opportunity founded to serve the youth of the mountains?”

EAST MEETS WEST

On September 4, it was announced that UPIKE would collaborate with WKU on health programs. The partnership would make three health-related master’s degree programs available to students in eastern Kentucky and provide access to WKU students in UPIKE’s College of Optometry. Presidents James Hurley (UPIKE) and Gary Ransdell (WKU) pose with polos from the other’s institution.

Ransdell made the announcement at the Pikeville campus. WKU will begin by offering a Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) pathway program this fall that includes all of the pre-requisite courses students need to qualify for the master’s program in Communication Disorders, which will be available in fall 2015. The Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) will also be available by fall 2015. In fall 2016, WKU will offer the Master of Social Work at UPIKE, a web-based format. UPIKE is also offering access to WKU students seeking careers in optometry. “The University of Pikeville is developing a pre-optometry track and will offer five guaranteed admission slots per year to WKU undergraduate students who meet the program criteria and 15 guaranteed admission slots to UPIKE students,” said Dr. Hurley. Dr. Hurley said cooperation is key to meeting the needs across the Commonwealth. “President Ransdell and I firmly believe in public-private partnerships and educational investment,” he said. “I fully expect the University of Pikeville to extend some of our degree programs to the WKU campus in the near future. Our intent and common vision is very clear – to enhance opportunity and access for students to obtain higher education degrees

in a non-duplicated manner. This is a win-win partnership for higher education in Kentucky.”

NEW CENTER FOR STUDENT SUCCESS GRANTED

Just recently, The University of Pikeville was awarded a $2.2 million Title III Strengthening Institutions Program Grant by the U.S. Department of Education to create a center for student success. UPIKE President James Hurley said the grant would be used to create a center for student success with a centralized approach to advising, tracking and supporting first-year students. “We are eager to expand the services we offer our students and provide personalized, individual attention to every firstyear student,” said Hurley. “We will continue to enhance our campus-wide efforts to improve retention and persistence, and ultimately graduate more students.” The University of Pikeville just recently celebrated 125 years of educating the community with their Homecoming Celebration. Hopefully, the recent success coming from the University of Pikeville is a sign of what is to come in the region.
