CEO’s Message 3 stories, making a difference

what you will volunteer for.” She set the example by her own volunteering over the years, and with the clarity only a mother can voice, gave the expectation that her kids - now young adults - have a responsibility to their community. Simply paying taxes is not enough to make a community strong. This is not a story I made up to make a point. All the people are real although I will not give their names. These are true stories about people who have the absolutely right perspective on how they fit into the world and are doing more than the average person to make it a better place. They give of themselves in different ways and in different places but they all have the same belief that they have a responsibility to do something… and they are doing great things. The man in Minot lost a family member in a vehicle accident and as a tribute to his brother’s memory has bought, assembled and given away bikes to kids who need them for 12 years. He also gives away back packs filled with school supplies, and kids’ winter coats, and does so in the park near the place his brother passed away. He does not do media as ‘it’s not about him.’ And I am not talking about a dozen bikes and bags and coats but literally hundreds each year. The woman who went to Cuba had extra luggage as she took medicines we can buy across the counter here and likely have in abundance in your homes. In Cuba a plain old aspirin is not readily available and when it is, it’s expensive. She also takes bikes and used laptops and software. To her friends in Saskatchewan it’s junk - who wants an old laptop? But to her friends in Cuba it’s amazing. She packs them well and does it all legally so no one gets in trouble, but what she does makes a difference to those people who live on dollars a day in Cuba. The Chamber President lives in a town that has seen its share of people move in and out and over the years. In fact her own kids, after moving out to the bright lights, are now happily moving back to town with their families. The President was thrilled to have her kids and grand kids back, but she made it a point to ask each of them directly and with clear purpose, “I am very glad you are back living here, but now it’s time for you to decide

Some might say that we are blessed with many people who do things like this every day, and they are right. We in the business community are also blessed that we have companies like Jay’s Moving and Storage, who very substantially support groups like the MS Society and Potash Corp who were active in helping out the food banks and the evacuees this past summer. In both cases these companies do much more than just these examples. In fact, many more companies do great things (big and small) every day. The right to operate a business comes with some legal requirements, and I would argue some moral ones, too. A fellow once said how much he disliked the term ‘giving back’ as it suggested you took something that was not yours. Doing business is not taking what is not yours, it’s getting results from your work and investment. And when that’s done… well, it gives business people the option of sharing their money, skills, equipment or even staff to make the place they live and work even better. So to those who could be, but aren’t volunteering – where do you want to start? To those companies who could give, but don’t – when are you starting to help make the community stronger? And those who give much (and I know that’s the vast majority of you) let me say thanks for making Saskatchewan a great place to live, work and invest.

ABEX 2015 Finalists Announced Finalists are the “gold standard” in Saskatchewan business The curtain has been drawn back for a glimpse at the lineup of finalists for the 2015 ABEX Awards, to be held October 24th at TCU Place in Saskatoon, and the list of names is impressive. “We are very impressed by the number and calibre of nominations received this year,” said Steve McLellan, CEO of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. “Our 2015 ABEX theme is ‘The Glitter of Gold’ and I must say – this group of finalists really sets ‘the gold standard’ for Saskatchewan business.” In total, 89 nominations were submitted to the Sask Chamber, representing businesses of all sizes from across the province. Of those, 50 were chosen across the 10 categories. The Conexus Credit Union is the presenting sponsor of the ABEX Awards. “The Sask Chamber has implemented a system for the evaluation of nominations which makes it possible for small and large businesses to go head-to-head in a category fairly,” McLellan said. “The end result is a group of finalists who are on equal footing going into the judging.” In the Community Involvement Award category sponsored by BHP Billiton, the finalists include Airline Hotels (Saskatoon), Dutchak Holdings Ltd. (North Battleford), Jay’s Transportation Group (Regina), KPMG LLP (Regina), P.A.R. Contracting Ltd. September 10 is Youth Safety Education Day The Service & Hospitality Safety Association of Saskatchewan Inc. (SHSA), is very proud to announce the designation of September 10 as Youth Safety Education Day. For four years now, the SHSA has celebrated this important day by visiting high schools throughout Saskatchewan and encouraging other schools and youth groups to be mindful and informed about workplace safety. In 2012, five workers under the age of 24 were killed in Saskatchewan. In 2013 the number of youth worker fatalities were two, both being under the age of 18. The SHSA works with both future workers and youth leaders to raise awareness of workplace hazards and risks, how to develop a positive workplace safety culture and the importance of eliminating workplace injuries. The SHSA is working towards re-educating our youth to know their rights, and the importance of protecting themselves and their peers from all hazards they may face on the job. In early 2012, the SHSA began to lay the foundation towards a Youth Workplace Safety Initiative, with the belief that true change will come not just in curriculum, but in conversations and examples laid out by peers and educators in the hallways, school grounds and lunchrooms of our schools. It is the goal of the SHSA to reach youth before they begin their employment journey. This year packages have been sent out to partners which include schools, youth groups and businesses that employ a large number of youth. The package includes

fun activities promoting safety in the workplace as well as informative videos and materials highlighting the core principles of safety. The goal is to have these partners use the package to teach and inform our youth of the dangers posed to young workers and how they can effectively protect and empower themselves while out in the workforce. Everyone has an obligation to educate and protect the most valuable resource, the young worker. Unfortunately on average 8,000 young Saskatchewan workers are injured every year. Injuries of youth working in the hospitality industries in Regina and Saskatoon account for 817 of these injuries. Youth (aged 1524) are 3 times more likely to be injured on the job than any other worker. This is unacceptable; even a single injury is too many!

ADVOCACY in ACTION By Curtis Hemming, Director of Government Relations

As the October 19 Federal election nears, the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce is continuing to have conversations with a variety of candidates throughout our province. There has certainly been no shortage of things to discuss with them, and every day there seems to be a new and interesting topic to consider, based on the comments of the leaders on the campaign trail. While many of the SCC’s policy resolutions are provincially-oriented, we are advocating numerous recommendations from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s A Canada That Wins national election platform, as are many provincial and city Chambers across the country. This document, released in May 2015 by the CCC, focuses on developing practical solutions in four areas that are critically important to the Canadian

economy, including access to a great workforce, access to capital, access to technology and innovation, and access to markets. Since there is also a provincial election coming up soon, we are continuing to promote our own provincial election strategy document called OnTrack 2016, which was released in May at our annual Conference on Business. We are holding another series of policy roundtables in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Estevan in November to solicit feedback from our members on issues and to let them know what we are currently working on. We are also holding a new event called The Chair’s Invitational Dinner later in September which will have nearly all of the provincial government’s Deputy Ministers and Crown Corporation CEOs

This event will be a formal dinner and policy discussion, similar to our annual Provincial Political Forum, and the tickets for it sold out in record time. ACCE Conference a great opportunity for learning, recognition On August 11th 1st Vice-Chair, Shawna Nelson, SCC CEO, Steve McLellan and SCC Director of Membership Engagement, Elissa LaLiberte travelled to Montreal to attend the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives Annual Conference. The conference featured a full slate of educational programs designed to strengthen the work of the chamber. Shawna, Steve and Elissa were able to attend sessions on leadership, communications and marketing, education attainment and so much more. This was the first time in ACCE’s history that the conference was held in Canada, the SCC was excited to join the 30 other Canadian Chambers in attendance. It was at the ACCE Conference Awards Show where our Chamber was honoured to be recognized in the Top 10 North American Chambers for Membership Retention (Accounts) as well as New Member Retention (Accounts). OHS conducting inspections in manufacturing From September through November 2015, the Occupational Health and Safety Division (OHS) will be conducting inspections of manufacturers in Regina, Saskatoon and a number of rural locations. The inspections are part of an injury prevention project between WorkSafe Saskatchewan, the Safety Association of Saskatchewan Manufacturers (SASM), and the Saskatchewan Association of Chiropractors. Workers in manufacturing occupations are at high risk for back and shoulder injuries. According to the Saskatchewan

Workers’ Compensation Board 2014 Annual Report, labourers in processing, manufacturing and utilities had the fourth-highest total number of injuries; welders and machine operators had the fifth-highest total number of injuries in the province. During the inspections, the OHS field officers will be providing SASM information packages for employers. They will also be directing workers and employers to SASM training services.

INJURY PREVENTION TIPS: 1. Work shouldn’t hurt. If you are often in pain at the end of your shift, something is wrong with the tools you are using, the number of times you are repeating a motion, or the force, strength, posture or effort it takes your body to do a job. 2.

Not all workers are the same. Workers of different heights need different workstation heights.

3. Just because something is called ‘ergonomic’ does not make it safe to use. Often an ‘ergonomic’ tool can be a hazard. Use tools and equipment that make the job easier and fit the worker properly. 4. By removing forceful exertions, unnecessary repetitive movements, and improving worker posture, you can improve production. 5. A safe workplace can prevent absenteeism, turnover, and increase employee morale. Workers who don’t feel sore when going to work are much less likely to call in sick or look for a new job. 6. Workers often have the best solutions to ergonomic problems. Ask the people doing the job for suggestions. Nobody spends more time thinking about ways to make the job better than the person doing it. Often workers have great solutions to common workplace problems. Contributed by:

More than a few SCC members rolled up their sleeves and helped out during and after the forest fires that threatened Northern Saskatchewan this summer. Led by donations of $50,000 each from PotashCorp, Saskatchewan Blue Cross and the Kitsaki Group of Companies, $277,872 was raised for emergency food hampers for evacuees as they returned home. Another SCC member, Northern Resource Trucking hauled 11 semi-trailer truckloads of food at no charge to more than two dozen northern communities. Monetary donations also came in from SCC members: CIBC $10,000, MNP LLP $10,000, RBC Dominion $10,000, SaskPower $10,000, and SaskTel $10,000. Click here to read more. STARS Rescue on the Prairies raised over $425,000 this year. The participants were airlifted by STARS to a remote location near Dundurn on August 26th, they then used their networks to compete against each other to raise funds. Two of the participants in STARS Rescue on the Prairies are SCC members; congratulations and THANK YOU to David Dube (Concorde Group Corp) and Ron Carson (Carson Energy Services Ltd.).
