More than one thousand art lovers attended the fourth annual Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce Fine Art Fair, a weekend of color, design and entertainment, held July 17-19 at the Orland Park Crossing shopping center. The event, a partnership between the Chamber, the Village of Orland Park and Orland Park Crossing gathered 50 local artists specializing in a variety of medium, from painting and sculpture to textiles and jewelry. Entertainment included a children’s community sculpture project, live music and food and drink from local restaurants. New this year, the weekend began with a Fine Art Fair Gala and Pop-Up Shop, featuring live music, wine and appetizers, and the opportunity to preview select artists’ exhibits. The fair hosted 50 artists who featured their one-of-a-kind paintings, sculptures, ceramics and jewelry.

President’s Message There are two types of people in this world - those that thrive on the latest and greatest technology and those that just don’t see what the big deal is.
I tend to lean toward the first group, utilizing everything my iPhone offers me, embracing Google Drive at work and attempting new software to improve workflow. Anything that can make me more efficient I am all for it. I’m really excited about the changes that we are making with the chamber’s website as well. It’s going to offer our members some really great ways to market themselves. One thing technology doesn’t always do the best job with is communication. Sure, you can zip off an email in seconds to a business contact, use social media to promote your business to current and potential clients or market yourself to other local businesses, but nobody can tell the story of your business better than you do through face-to-

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) and the Importance of Knowing Your Meds

I am constantly reminded of the increasing need for patients to receive comprehensive medication counseling. Mostly I am reminded by my patients who recount stories of negative reactions to a vitamin, a supplement, or a prescription drug that could have been avoided if they had received proper instructions on medication use. At the time you leave a pharmacy after filling a prescription or purchasing vitamins or over-the-counter medication, you should be able to answer five questions: 1. What does it do? 2. Should you avoid eating or
5. What should you do if you mis a dose? If you can answer these questions without any hesitation, you have a good handle on your drug therapy. If you struggle with one or more of these answers, you may consider speaking with your pharmacist to clarify any gaps in knowledge. For patients who have a chronic disease or take five or more maintenance medications (i.e., for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, etc.), professional medication therapy management (MTM) may be necessary. Medication therapy management (MTM) is perhaps the most
valuable tool for preventing serious adverse drug events. An adverse drug event is any injury resulting from medication use including physical harm or mental anguish. The most serious adverse events result in patient hospitalization and in cases involving patients of advanced age, the outcome is more likely to be serious or fatal. MTM counseling sessions can usually identify any apparent concerns that may have been overlooked by the prescribing physician or dispensing pharmacist. In addition to reducing adverse drug events, MTM counseling optimizes therapeutic outcomes through improved medication use. In cooperation with the prescribing physician, MTM counseling sessions may lead to recommended changes in drug therapy that dramatically shift the course of patient therapy

in a positive direction. I have seen this happen time and time again, because unless someone takes the time to go over each and every medication, the details of potential side effects, dietary considerations and safety precautions cannot be fully explained or understood. The era of the large chain retail pharmacies churning out prescriptions like fast food has virtually stamped out pharmacistpatient medication counseling opportunities. Medication therapy management (MTM) promises hope in the form of advanced, patient-driven pharmacy care. Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce member 22nd Century Media, Chicagoland’s fast-growing media company, is the recipient of 14 awards through the National Newspaper Association’s 2015 Better Newspaper Editorial Contest. The awards, presented for work in 22nd Century Media papers including the Orland Park Prairie (second place, Best Feature Story by Bill Jones; and third place, Best Obituary by Heather Warthen), were won among a field of 1,413 entries and hundreds of newspapers form 33 states. Winners will be recognized at the award breakfast to be held in October, during NNA’s 129th Annual Convention & Trade Show
