DAN & MARIAN SPENCE

E XCLUSI V E IN T ER V IE W

A LOVE

STORY FOR THE

AGES

The Woodlands locals Dan & Marian Spence are still just as in love today as they were on their wedding day 56 years ago. For 56 years Dan and Marian Spence have shared a love like no other. They grew up only seven miles apart, but didn’t meet until their senior year of high school. From then on, as they say, the rest was history. Dan can still describe exactly what Marian looked like the day he first met her - right down to her ponytail. Marian still laughs about Dan’s high school antics. While they didn’t get together until college, it’s clear that it was love at first sight. That adoration hasn’t faded one bit in the 56 years that they’ve been married, and their love story has become an inspiration to all those who meet them. Throughout the love story that they’ve written together, the couple has faced ups and downs, and have built a life that they wouldn’t change for the world. They raised four sons, who have given them 14 grandkids - a family that they’re fiercely proud of. They share some amazing memories, but through it all, the times that they spent surprising each other seem to be the most treasured. “On our first date we went to see Psycho,” Marian giggles, like she’s describing it for the very first time. “At one of the scariest parts of the movie, Dan left to get popcorn and when he came back in everyone screamed, and I just saw his shadow jump, and the popcorn go flying.” Since that first date they’ve walked the Great Wall of China, experienced Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, and renewed their vows in Niagara Falls. When asked what their secret is, they say simply, that there isn’t one. They’re two very different people, but they treat their love with kindness and protect it fiercely. “Your love is fragile,” Marian advises. “You have to hold it gently and keep it safe.” “I would be a fool to try and replace her,” Dan said matter of factly. “The magic is still there, and the best is yet to be.”

Life of the Party Make your reception the talk of the town. Choosing entertainment at your wedding can quickly become one of the most overwhelming tasks for any bride-to-be. Standing out from the crowd can be tough, and finding unique options that will get guests involved and letting loose is sort of like a treasure hunt. FOOD TRUCK UPGRADE Everyone loves a good food truck – upgrade the experience by eliminating the lines. Have a few food trucks come out, but prepurchase a few dishes or have them create a limited menu just for your wedding. Guests will spend less time waiting on their food (the only annoying part about the food truck experience) and more time tasting all of the delicious cuisine.

MIX OFF Are your friends and family party people? Have a little cocktail mixing competition. Get everyone involved by having a few different bars scattered around the room instead of one central station. Each bar can even be themed with different elements from your wedding to keep guests moving around. Photo: insideweddings.com

A WAY WITH WORDS A quick guide to wedding invitation etiquette.

STEP ONE: Decide whether you’re having a formal affair, or something more casual. Formal weddings demand a certain air of sophistication when it comes to your invitations. Not only will it help your invitation suite to flow with the rest of the wedding theme, it subtly lets guests know what kind of ambiance to expect. Thanks to the growing ambiguousness of dress code wording, a formal invitation will help guests plan everything from their own attire to what type of accommodations they may need. On the other side of the coin, a casually worded invitation lets guests know that it’s okay to let loose at your celebration, and that they can relax a bit more with their wardrobe.

S TEP T WO: Determine the hosts. Regardless of whether you’re having a formal or casual wedding, the hosts’ names should be displayed prominently – if you’re having a host! Traditionally the bride’s parents host a wedding, but modern weddings often see both sets of parents contributing to the shindig, or neither – instead letting the happy couple put on the whole show.

If your parents are hosting the wedding – meaning they helped to make the arrangements and secure vendors, etc. – you need to acknowledge that in your invitation:

If both families are hosting a formal wedding you would change up your wording to reflect that:

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

request the pleasure of your company

and

at the marriage of their daughter

Mr. & Mrs. Doe

Jane Smith

are pleased to invite you to celebrate

to

the marriage of their children

John Doe,

Jane Smith

son of Mr. & Mrs. Doe.

and John Doe.

If you’re going formal, but are hosting the wedding yourself, it’s pretty simple:

Jane Smith and John Doe request the pleasure of your company as they exchange vows.

TIP: To elevate your wording even more, be sure to include both you and your husband-to-be’s middle names. F OR T HE C A S UA L W ED D IN G – the wording is up to you! You get to be more playful in all that you do. Be sure to include the basics – your names and your parents’ names if they’re hosting.

S W EE T E X T R A S

STEP THREE: Decide whether you’re inviting all of your guests to both the ceremony and reception, or if you will be having two groups. It’s not uncommon for couples to invite a smaller group to the ceremony. This happens for a lot of reasons including the size of the church, the length of the ceremony, and even the language that the ceremony will be held in. Sometimes it’s even as simple as only wanting to share the religious and most sentimental part of your marriage with your closest family and friends. If you’re inviting two separate groups, you’ll need to create two separate invitations. The wording can remain the same for most of the invitation, but the time, location, and invitation wording will change.

If you’re inviting guests to the CEREMONY

ONLY:

Mr. & Mrs. Smith request the pleasure of your company as their daughter Jane Smith exchanges vows with John Doe, son of Mr. & Mrs. Doe on the Thirty-First of January, 2019 at two o’clock in the afternoon Ceremony Location

PAPER HEARTS A choice for every occasion.

Paper is more complicated than it looks. There are different textures, finishes, weights, and so much more. When it comes to choosing the right option for your invitation suite, it can sometimes feel like you’re drowning in choices. The paper that you choose has a huge impact on your overall invitation suite. It can impact the colors that you have to choose from, the way that your invitation is designed, and any special effects like metallic inks or die cutting that you may want to have. Knowing a few key words and basics of what you want when working with your stationery specialist goes a long way.

42 |

FL AIRMAGA ZINEC W.COM – SEP TEMBER 2018

1.

2.

MATTE VS. GLOSSY

HANDMADE, RECYCLED, AND LINEN

When you see a paper that is matte or glossy, it’s referring to the finish of the paper. Both options are available in tons of weights and sizes, but the way that they’re printed is different, which can affect pricing and the amount of time it takes from design to delivery.

These three types of paper often cause confusion, because sometimes the terms handmade, recycled, and linen are used to refer to the texture of the paper, and not the actual makeup of the paper. A general rule of thumb to follow when you see these terms is to assume that they add a little finish and depth to the look of the paper. It’s always best to check with your stationery specialist and look at (and feel!) samples before ordering.

S W EE T E X T R A S

3.

4.

COATED VS. UNCOATED

METALLIC, MARBLED, AND PARCHMENT

All you need to know about coated or uncoated paper comes down to the type of printing you’d like for your invitations. Different types of inks and printing methods are best on coated, while others are better on uncoated paper. Be sure to check with a professional if you’re ordering invitations online instead of just checking a random box.

These specialty papers are usually suggested for brides who already have a very specific aesthetic goal in mind. Generally, a simple design that lets the paper be the star works best here. If you want a heavily designed invitation with lots of colors, elements, and flourishes, consider something a bit more basic so that your design really pops.

Because photography is such a meaningful and important part of any wedding celebration, most photographers are booked six months to a year in advance, and photography can easily be one of the most expensive parts of your big day. With such an important investment, there are a few questions to ask, and a few details to keep in mind when you’re searching for the perfect photographer.

Your wedding photos are without a doubt the most precious part of your big day. With the chaos, excitement, and buzz, most couples are hard pressed to remember every single moment. Your photos keep your memories alive, and are a time capsule for your kids and grandkids to treasure forever. So, no pressure, but making sure your photos will be on point is one of the most important things you’ll do when planning your wedding.

Now that you’ve done your homework and found the perfect photograher for your wedding day, it’s time to make sure that you nail those shots - you only get one chance! Working together with your photographer and their team in advance will help them to understand exactly what you want, and will cut down on stress when the big day finally arrives. Gather a little inspiration and share it with them, but be sure not to go overboard. Once your photographer sees what inspires you, they’ll be able to capture images that you’ll treasure forever.

Ethereal photography is replacing bright, pop-art-inspired photography trends for 2019. Soft edges, romantic colors, and sweet moments are the name of the game!
